Human mobility is a process with deep historical roots that forms part of a complex web of cultural, social, economic, and environmental factors. Despite this long history, the widespread notion of a “migration crisis” characterized by massive and uncontrolled flows has framed the issue as a polarizing political, academic, and media issue in the migration debate. In Los mitos de la inmigración: 22 falsos mantras sobre el tema que más nos divide, De Haas draws attention to the importance of a scientific and holistic approach to migration, leaving aside political interests and ideological positions. This enables an understanding of its nature and causes, and takes the debate beyond biased and simplistic opinions.

In an urban context, memory can be observed in the fabric of streets, neighborhoods, and other places that preserve stories, emotions, and fragments of lives that, when intertwined, can build a shared identity.

This article presents the results of a qualitative study conducted in Santiago, Chile, which analyzes the meanings attributed by adult migrants to their experiences of coexistence and urban citizenship in an area of the Santiago Centro district (comuna). Using ethnographic methods, between 2023 and 2024, we conducted participatory observation and in-depth interviews with Venezuelan migrants. The combination of neighborhood and transnationality brings to light increasingly visible heterogeneous practices from below, although these are usually undervalued by nationals and government institutions. This is an area that has been characterized by recent densification in an old residential setting, and since 2014 has received a Venezuelan population, which has gradually formed an ethnic enclave, revealing significant density and diversity in the agglomerations. The results show a plurality of meanings around everyday life and local citizenship, highlighting a typology of coexistence between Venezuelan migrants and nationals: 1) hostility; 2) cordiality; and 3) inclusive dialogue, with mixophobia predominating in a context of growing political de-urbanization at the national level.

This work presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on social–ecological system trajectories (SESTs) worldwide to identify the existing scientific literature focused on SEST definitions, temporal and spatial tendencies, and the theoretical and methodological approaches applied to propose a general SEST conceptualization. The sample includes 143 articles selected from the international Scopus database that were analyzed across five groups including a total of 32 variables. The results indicate that most publications originate from the Global North, whereas the study sites are predominantly located in the Global South. Few definitions of the SEST term exist. The proposed general SEST conceptualization includes multiple social‒ecological dimensions and temporal (past, current and future) and spatial (territorial) dynamics. The SEST case studies focus primarily on human benefits and specific system components. Predominant analytical frameworks refer to social–ecological systems, resilience, and adaptation; are characterized by qualitative or quantitative methods; and are multidisciplinary. There are three categories of SEST studies: studies with an adaptation, development focus (for political aims) and studies with a focus on change (for research objectives). Adaptation and change studies dominate, and studies in all three categories consider pathways to sustainability goals. Key research challenges include producing cross-sectional and equitable research, integrating diverse knowledge perspectives, and adopting inter- and transdisciplinary approaches.

This article examines the political and subjective conditions of the growing supply and demand for no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) in Argentina today. The author includes men in the discussion of contraception policies since the 1960s. Based on observations and interviews, the article analyzes the contraceptive paths of 13 men who underwent NSV in two public health institutions in the Province of Buenos Aires at the end of 2023. The findings reveal how these men developed their understanding of sexuality and contraceptive methods, what motivated them to undergo the NSV procedure, and the role of feminist popularization in shaping their ideas and decisions. The results show a model of hybrid masculinity: alternatively or simultaneously, NSV can be considered as a “help” to the partner, a strategy to avoid depending on the partner’s actions or decisions, a way to take responsibility for contraception, and a means of following his own urges. The decision may therefore express a commitment to gender equity and/or an adherence to contemporary subjectivation processes that value autonomy, self-care, and self-realization.

With this volume, the journal Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos celebrates four decades of uninterrupted scientific publication. Since its creation in 1986, it has been a national and regional reference in demographic, urban and environmental studies, which constitutes a testimony of collective dedication and effort that has made it possible to build a space for reflection, discussion and analysis in these disciplines. . This path began forty years ago, although its roots date back to 1967, with the founding of its predecessor Demografía y Economía. Both publications have been fundamental beacons for the study of social sciences in Latin America.

The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the transformations, persistences, resistances, and contradictions surrounding masculinities in contemporary Mexico. Based on an exhaustive review of the specialized literature and in dialogue with her own research, the author organizes the text into five fundamental axes: male identity and masculinity, economic provision, domestic and care work, labor market insertion, and gender violence in the family sphere. The work paints a complex picture in which traditional and emerging patterns coexist in gender relations, revealing the complexity of the transition toward more equitable relationships.
