Portugal introduced information and comunication technologies (ICT) in non-higher education schools in mid eighties throught Minerva Project. After that, there were several projects, most of them based on policies to supply equipment to the schools and teacher training. Nevertheless all programs to provide equipment to the schools and teachers’ training as well as the social trends towards a full integration of ICT in the the classroom context, the indicators measuring the use of ICT pointed out a low level of its use in elementary schools. This way we tried to know what are the different practices of computer use at school, who are the teachers using ICT, in which activities they use them, which ICT programs they use, we mean how they really use ICT in elementary schools of Algarve region. Following a research methodology based on two lines, a questionnaire applied to the teachers of a sample of schools and an interview to expertise teachers,we conclude that in fact the use of ICT in schools 1st cycle is reduced , in line with the literature, and teachers value their use conditioning it to factors such as curriculum, equipment and training. The attitudes of teachers have also a considerable high standard.

The environmental crisis is now evident and its manifestations are so numerous and powerful (from climate change, to the increasing social and economic instability, from the progressive loss of biodiversity, to the reduction of resources ...) to make unavoidable and urgent the necessity to make a change capable of satisfying the needs of the present generation, without compromising the possibility that future generations will be able to satisfy their own (Brundtland, 1987). Despite the hard evidence, the answers are still too timid. It is increasingly important to involve new generations in a process of awareness about these themes through which they can build their own experience, direct and concrete. What future could have a public educational institution that was not able to develop culture on the most urgent problems of our time? In order to promote change it is therefore necessary (to promote as well) a constant and continuous educational commitment capable of translating into a re-appropriation and knowledge of the environment in which we live. Starting from these premises, an Erasmus Plus project entitled "School Territory Environment and Pedagogy" (STEP) was built and shared with four European and non-European countries. The objective (of the project) is to (create) co-construct a trans-national curriculum on the themes of active citizenship, starting from what can be considered its three founding principles: sustainability education, civil coexistence, and tangible and intangible heritage. In the present contribution, attention will be paid in particular to the dimension of the environment, understood as an opportunity, tool and interlocutor to promote reflections and paths of education to sustainability.

This article, the first of a series of two, is based on the idea that all innovative discourse in the science education (and by extension in the school) has a political and ideological background with social consequences. Taking this into account, the discourse of the IRES Project (Research and Renewal of the School) is analyzed through interviews with its four founders and the analysis of three articles published by them. Speech Analysis (AD) was used as an analytical method and the results show that the project has an alternative ideology generated in the anti-Franco context and that its origin is based on the Research Principle (as a quality common to all human beings) enriched by the theoretical influences of constructivism, complexity and critical theory.

We present an interpretative research of qualitative nature in the area of Didactics of the Experimental Sciences, carried out during the training period of the secondary teacher training. It was developed in the context of the Sciences for the Contemporary World. Their perspectives coincide with those of curricular sustainability, allowing to assume the educational fact as a complex reality. We analyze how to bring theory into practice from a first approximation to the reality of the classroom and if these reflections represent an improvement in the professional development of teachers along with the adequacy of the analisys tool GESC_UCA (Cardeñoso, Azcárate & Oliva, 2013; Cardeñoso, Cuesta & Azcárate; 2015) as a reference framework for reflection.

Research results and interpretations of the testing of five prototype continuous reinforced concrete beams (four haunched and one prismatic) designed to develop a shear failure under cyclic loading are presented. Subject beams were tested with minimum shear reinforcement. The studied haunched length is one-third the effective span of the beam. The considered angles of slope of haunch from horizontal vary from 0° (prismatic) to 10°. Cyclic tests were displacement-controlled, and two cycles at the same displacement were set in the displacement history which considers a geometrical increment of target displacements. Differences in the cyclic shear behavior of haunched beams with respect to prismatic beams were monitored in terms of cracking patterns, stiffness and strength degradation and energy dissipation. The obtained results from the cyclic testing in continuity conditions allow one to corroborate what it was observed in previous testing for simply supported beams: reinforced concrete haunched beams are more efficient than reinforced concrete prismatic beams, even when they fail in shear.

The considered angles of slope of haunch from horizontal vary from 0° (prismatic) to 10° . Cyclic tests were displacement-controlled, and two cycles at the same displacement were set in the displacement history which considers a geometrical increment of target displacements. The parameters under study with respect to the shear-resisting mechanism are: (a) the angle of haunch from horizontal and its impact on the concrete strength, (b) the contribution of the inclined longitudinal steel reinforcement, (c) the contribution of the transverse steel reinforcement and, d) the angle of inclination of the main shear crack. Previously proposed design equations were examined based upon: a) the section approach and, b) strut-and-tie (truss model). It was confirmed that, for design purposes, reasonable assessments of the shear strength of haunched beams are obtained with the proposed equations.

The Protein Folding Problem (PFP) consists in determining the functional three-dimensional structure or Native Structure (NS) of a protein, which normally has the lowest Gibbs energy. In this paper, a new hybrid Parallel Evolutionary Multi-Quenching Annealing Algorithm (PEMQA) is proposed to obtain high-quality solutions for the target proteins. PEMQA generates an initial population of solutions using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Furthermore, a Multi-Quenching Algorithm (MQA) is executed in an independent core using each of these Genetic Algorithm (GA) solutions. A master process determines which MQA delivers the best solution. PEMQA uses shared memory parallel programming and is implemented in SMMP (Simple Molecular Mechanics for Proteins). The incorporation of evolutionary processes in a PEMQA algorithm allows an improvement in MQA capacity of exploration. Results obtained with PEMQA outperform most of those achieved by the classic SA reported in current state of the art literature.
