Autor/s Maria Grazia BusàUniversity of Padua, Italy   ABSTRACT This paper discusses how multimodal resources can be used to teach oral communication strategies, as exemplified in a course taught at the University of Padua, Italy. The course focused on lexicon and language structures in use, pronunciation and intonation, body language, and cultural awareness. A variety of multimedia resources were used, including: pictures and illustrations; digital slides; audio files for pronunciation exercises and for audio-video feedback with the speech analysis software Praat; video clips from online English courses and other YouTube videos of authentic interviews, talk shows, news, monologues, and presentations. The main class activities were: listening and watching video clips; metalinguistic discussions on the use of verbal and non-verbal language in different linguistic situations; pronunciation practice; and speaking. Students were filmed while speaking and received feedback on their oral and communicative skills. Overall, the course appeared to be highly effective in raising students’ awareness of facts about English communication and its workings.

Pleurothallis minutilabia, a species unique in subsection Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae because of the minute, highly reduced lip, is described and compared to the most similar species in the subsection. It is also compared morphologically to Pleurothallis kaynagata from section Abortivae, to which P. minutilabia is not related, but which also possesses a highly reduced lip. The morphology of the flower of P. minutilabia is discussed briefly in relation to possible pollination mechanisms. The distribution, restricted to Zamora Chinchipe, southern Ecuador, and the conservation status are addressed. A new species, Scaphosepalum tarantula, is described. It is recognized by the medium-sized plants with grey-green leaves suffused with red-brown to purple stains at the petioles; densely fimbriated, red-brown to sanguine flowers, spiky tails of the lateral sepals and a dark sanguine, wingless lip. It is here compared to Scaphosepalum fimbriatum with which it shares similarities.

The German botanist and Professor at the University of Göttingen, Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer (1782–1856), studied the plants collected in the Dutch colony of Essequibo by Ernst Carl Rodschied and those kept in the herbarium of Professor Franz Karl Mertens, which he had received from a Dutch colonist during the early 1800s. On that basis, he published in 1818 his work Primitiae Florae Essequeboensis, describing 344 species of plants. Among them there are five species of orchids, two of which were new to science.

La distribución de las plantas epífitas está influenciada por las características de su forófito, que provee el sustrato necesario para el establecimiento. Encyclia pyriformis (Lindl.) Schltr. es una especie característica de las arenas blancas del Occidente de Cuba, con una distribución restringida, lo cual es un elemento clave para el manejo y mantenimiento de la población en el tiempo. El objetivo del trabajo es caracterizar el uso del microhábitat de E. pyriformis y analizar la relación entre las variables ambientales y morfológicas. El estudio se realizó en 39 parcelas (25 m2), en la Reserva Ecológica Los Pretiles. Se identificaron a los individuos de E. pyriformis, en los cuales se midieron seis variables ambientales y cuatro morfológicas. Los valores promedios de las variables ambientales fue de 9.42 cm de diámetro del tronco, 66.58% de cobertura vegetal, 373 m de distancia a la costa, 0.84 m de altura sobre el suelo y 2.37 m de altura del forófito. Para las variables morfológicas los valores promedios fueron de 24.9 cm para altura del individuo, 1.87 cm de diámetro del pseudobulbo, 13.62 cm y 2.06 cm de largo y ancho de la hoja, respectivamente. No se encontró correlación entre las variables ambientales y morfológicas. La ausencia de correlación entre los dos grupos de variables parece indicar que la combinación de variables ambientales analizadas no tienen un efecto evidente sobre la morfología de los individuos de E. pyriformis. Entender los factores ambientales que limitan y afectan la distribución de las especies es crítico para el mantenimiento de la diversidad. Identificar los factores que limitan el potencial de colonización de las orquídeas permitiría predicciones certeras ante cambios futuros en la comunidad y el ecosistema, lo cual puede influir en las estrategias de manejo de la especie.

Abstract. Using the "Seidenfaden collection" in Copenhagen as an example, we address the common view that botanical garden collections of orchids are important for conservation. Seidenfaden collected live orchids all over Thailand from 1957 to 1983 and created a traditional collection for taxonomic research, characterized by high taxonomic diversity and low intraspecific variation. Following an extended period of partial neglect, we managed to set up a five-year project aimed at expanding the collection with a continued focus on taxonomic diversity, but widening the geographic scope to tropical Asia. Since its establishment, the collection has contributed significantly to ex situ conservation and to research-based development of powerful tools for improving in situ conservation-related decisions and priorities. The collection has been, and still is, an important basis for taxonomic and floristic research which has enabled treatment of the Orchidaceae in the Thai red-list. However, the primary focus of our project has shifted to micro-propagation, DNA-barcoding and phylogenetic analysis. The close link between collection-based research and conservation is remarkable and probably applicable to plant collections in botanical gardens in general. Thus, if the collections are used properly, they have great potential for contributing to conservation in many different ways.

The anatomical characteristics of leaf, pseudobulb, and root of Bulbophyllum sterile of the subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae) were investigated. The anatomical investigation involved observing sections after staining with different stains as well as scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the cell dimensions were also measured. The amphistomatic leaves of B. sterile had a thick cuticle, paracytic type of stomata, collateral vascular bundles and starch grains. The rhizome had cuticularized uniseriate epidermis and a single layer of the hypodermis. The parenchymatous stem ground tissue was distinguished into outer and inner regions separated by a band of sclerenchymatous tissue. Collateral vascular bundles were distributed in the inner ground tissue. The size of the vascular bundles generally increased from the periphery towards the center. A sclerenchymatous patch covered the phloem pole, whereas the xylem is covered by thin walled parenchymatous cells. The outer surface of the pseudobulb is covered by a thick cuticle. The parenchymatous ground tissue consisted of starch grains, aeration, water and algal cells and scattered collateral vascular bundles. Sclerenchymatous cells covered the phloem pole, whereas the xylem is covered by thin-walled cells. The velamen in B. sterile is single layered consisting of highly elongated compactly arranged cells. Uniseriate exodermis is dimorphic consisting of long and short cells. Cortical cells are differentiated into exodermis and endodermis. The O-thickened endodermal cell layer is interrupted by thin walled passage cells. Pith is sclerenchymatous. From this study, it can be concluded that B. sterile possess anatomical adaptations to xeric conditions in all the vegetative organs.

A new species of Cyrtochilum from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is described and illustrated. The new species is most similar to the pink-flowered Cyrtochilum distans but is distinguished by its white and yellow-green flowers with spreading sepals and a pink lip with a basally yellow and apically white callus consisting of two parallel keels (vs. pink lateral sepals that are fused to about half or more of their length and a white callus consisting of two basal and two apical spreading keels).

A new species of Trichoglottis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Vandeae), Trichoglottis corazoniae Naive & Martyr, apparently endemic to Negros island, is here described and illustrated. It is closely similar to T. tamesisii but distinct by having forward-pointing stelidia with the upper surface being pubescent, larger flowers and a longer inflorescence. Information on the distribution, ecology and phenology are provided.

A checklist of the Orchidaceae of Maharashtra is presented based on herbarium collections and recent botanical explorations. This list comprises 32 genera with 106 taxa.The best represented genus is Habenaria, with 23 species, followed by Dendrobium with eleven, Eulophia and Oberonia with seven and Peristylus with six. In Maharashtra, the total endemic orchid species are 41 spread over in 13 genera. Of these 30, 6 species are endemic to Peninsular India and 5 species is endemic to India. Generally orchids are found in the nine major habitats in Maharashtra of which the best representation was observed in the semi-evergreen forests (55 species) followed by moist deciduous forests (48 species), high altitude rocky plateaus (26 species) and dry deciduous forests (25 species). In the checklist, flowering, habit, habitat, endemic status, distribution in Maharashtra are presented.
