Based on the Conventional Figurative Language Theory (Dobrovol’skij and Piirainen 2005a), this paper aims to analyse, from a linguo-cultural perspective, the symbolism of jade in Chinese culture and language, focusing on its phraseological units and metaphors. For this purpose, first of all, we briefly explore the history and culture of jade in China, as well as its ideograms and uses throughout history. Then, I focus on analysing its cultural connotations in phraseological units, such as power, wealth, virtue, perfection, exquisiteness and beauty, among others. Its symbolism has evolved over various historical periods. In this day and age, some of them are still alive, while others have become obsolete. However, its symbolic traces are deeply marked in the language. Furthermore, the large number and frequent use of phraseological units and metaphors with the component ‘jade’ shows its idiosyncratic cultural importance in China.

Clinical linguistics analyzes and describes communication and language impairment in patients, a field in which aphasia and phonetic features have been widely studied. In this paper, I propound a syntax-semantics analysis by means of the linking algorithm shown in Role and Reference Grammar (Van Valin and LaPolla 1997; Van Valin 2005), which will be applied to a sample of transcriptions from the corpus compiled by Peraita and Grasso (2010) with patients that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, the aims of this paper are, first, to analyze the verb predicates from patients of the first stage of the disease in search of language deficits; and, second, to show how this grammar may improve the description of the language in these patients and its possible early diagnosis. The results manifest that patients use states as the default Aktionsart; they tend to express more simple sentences and clauses than subordinate, coordinate and cosubordinate elements; we also find that most arguments are realized as verbal morphemes; and that patients rely more on the discourse-pragmatic content to compensate their cognitive deficits.

This research deals with the historical study of the linguistic attitudes underlying the controversy that originated in the beginning of sound films (1929-1931) about the pronunciation of spoken films in Spanish. Until now, this topic has been studied by film historians, but it has not been treated in depth from a linguistic perspective, so the purpose of this work is to make an interdisciplinary contribution that allows us to understand the meaning and repercussion of this early controversy in the process of recognition of the Latin American pronunciation of the Spanish language held in Madrid in April 1956

This paper analyzes how the future tense is associated to the subjunctive in the relative clause with the implicit antecedent cuando. A revision of the bibliography is offered, and the analysis focuses especially on a survey carried out with different questions about the mood and tense of the main verb in the free relative clauses of person, place, mood and time. This survey was conducted with 52 Spanish-speaking cultured informants; their choice preference of the verbal form, which is confirmed by an analysis based on the CORPES and CREA, leads us to the conclusion that the case in question shows some peculiarities which are distinguished from other relative clauses, in that the future tense is incompatible with the subordinate clause induced by cuando even if the time frame to which the adverb cuando is related has been previously presented. Furthermore, the future tense in the main clause is related to the subjunctive in the subordinate clause, so much so that its appearance in the main sentence determines the use of the subjunctive in the subordinate clause.
