Ecuador is characterized as a multi-threatening country where the effort to improve the quality of buildings should be a priority. From the tragic events of Pedernales in April 2016 have extracted important data from buildings collapsed or with high degree of deterioration, which show three characteristics in common: buildings without standardized structural criteria, absence of professional control during construction, and lack of forecast of possible structural damages before the incidence of a high intensity earthquake.Given the latent risk that Quito has, an investigation is presented where the seismic vulnerability is evaluated in terms of the structural configuration of ninety-seven (97) buildings in Zone 1 of Santa Clara de San Millán Commune, located in the western sector of the Metropolitan District of Quito, conformed in its great majority by informal constructions. By means of the survey and evaluation of these constructions, applying the practical guide for seismic evaluation and rehabilitation of structures in accordance with NEC 2015, determining that 91.8% of the evaluated buildings have high vulnerability in terms of structural configuration.

The parish of Calderon is the northeast gateway to the Metropolitan District of Quito, which due to its geographical location, soil value, cultural diversity and varied use of the property, plays host to a large population, which has been presented in recent years. as one of the areas with the highest growth, leading to problems in transportation, pollution, safety and circulation, since the lack of quality of this basic service has led to its inhabitants acquiring or using alternative means of transportation, to move in one of the most extensive parishes of the District at different times, collapsing the road network of this parish. The present work seeks to determine a new way of interacting of the different actors of the system, to optimize resources and a new spatial distribution of stops, among other alternatives through tools of geographic information systems applied to the base cartography and raised in situ, generating a technical and inclusive proposal that takes into account the geographical particularities of the parish.

Ecuador lacks thermal comfort standards causing building’s design to disregard the environment and local climate. The Millennium Schools program (UEM) adopted a prototype design  for the ease of optimizing construction time and lowering costs but disregarding the three variations of climatic regions in the country. This study uses subjective surveys to determine the desired conditions in classrooms and aims to evaluate the impact of passive architecture design techniques on thermal comfort. The surveys interestingly showed that perceptions of thermal comfort differ from published international standards and can be influenced by other perceptions regarding the space quality. Two UEMs located in Babahoyo and Quito, Coast and Andean region respectively, were selected for conducting the surveys and monitoring indoor conditions to validate a simulation model. Building dynamic simulation modelling is used to test the thermal performance and the impact of the envelope design on thermal comfort. The prototype buildings are capable of maintaining thermal comfort conditions on an average 70% in Quito, and 64% in Babahoyo of occupancy hours respectively. Using optimum architectural parameters, thermal comfort can increase to 95% in Quito and 80% in Babahoyo.

The cities exhibit a principle of fractal ordering –fractal and self-affinity or independent self-similar patterns of scale– which was demonstrated as a morphological characteristic of urban complexity for several decades. This study explores and develops a complex approach to the cycle path of the city of Bogotá D.C (Colombia) through fractal estimates and densities of its different spaces. Complementary methodologies such as geographic information systems (GIS) for the processing of data were used. As a result, the sites of greater and lesser density in the structure of the Bogota´s bikeway are shown as an indicator of evolution and planning. It was concluded that the set of sizes of the fractal dimensions has a power law distribution -represented by a dashed line- which reaffirms its fractal nature. As an innovative aspect, this work proposes to establish a possible connection between the social sciences and the complexity sciences, among which are the fractal geometry, from a transdisciplinary exploration that contributes to the recent studies on urban complexity from Latin America.

The urban sprawl is an irreversible fact in the evolutionary process of the cities. The new geographies that are evident in the cities, denote an intensive peripheral, diffuse and informal expansion, generally towards areas with a high natural threat, problematic that is present in a moment in which the negative, natural and anthropic events are frequently and with high intensities. For this reason, the present paper aims to answer the question: how the new geography of cities affect the social construction of the risk of its inhabitants? Two cities of the Ecuadorian pre coastal network, Quevedo and Milagro, were selected as case studies. It was found that social inequalities in areas of urban expansion are strongly marked; the inhabitants of these zones do not consume or live the city in the same way as in the centralities, forcing its inhabitants to develop practices and possess imaginaries that increase their exposure to the risk of disasters.

This article explores through the logical-historical and chronological method in the process of construction of Malecón Avenue in Havana in Cuba. This in relation to the geographical, historical, sociopolitical circumstances of the country and from its articulation with the main architectural works of the city. In this sense, the work in question stands out as an urban axis of the capital and carried out for fifty years to the light of various presidents to power. The main contribution of the study is the integration and organization of the documentary and informative collection in this respect and that is dispersed in different sources of national reference. It also encourages the circulation of content related to Latin American historical processes and that allow to consolidate the historiographical memory of the past, in particular of the Caribbean. Finally, it is possible to reflect and debate about the discursive configuration of architectural, urban works constructed and the habitants of the capital that contributed to the conformation of the social reality of the city.

This article compiles and performs a formal analysis of the archaeological complex of Ingapirca.  The analysis allows identifying forms and architectural elements, which can serve as inspiration for future architectural projects, using modern materials. The methodology of the research is descriptive with qualitative data, based on observation in situ and secondary information. The purpose of this article is to investigate previous formal and functional analysis of authors, introducing the background and cultural aspects of Cañari. The formal analysis considers the following aspects: geometry, dynamism, hierarchy, concavity, and simple elements constituted by constructive systems. Taking into account that architecture is the story written in stone, the shape of the archaeological complex reflex a culture, which hierarchized its buildings, respecting the topography and nature. The physical environment reflects the identity of society; it is recommended to study forms of ancient architecture for the inspiration of future modern projects
