A crucial step in the discovery of any new molecule is to determine its complete structure, which includes determining the planar structure of the molecule and its stereochemistry. It has been seen that the latter is strongly linked to its chemical and biological properties. However, this is particularly difficult when the chiral center(s) are in portions with high flexibility that are easily exchanged between different conformations, as is the case with acyclic fragments or rings with high flexibility. Improvements in NMR spectroscopy methods have made it a powerful tool for determining the structure of organic molecules. One of the most popular strategies developed in recent decades to address many structural problems is J-constant-based analysis (JBA), which consists of the use of long-distance heteronuclear (C—H) coupling constants (two or three bonds) to determine the stereochemistry, even in systems with flexibility.

This article covers a bibliographic review on the chemical treatment of water, used for the cooling of internal combustion engines, in generating sets. The text includes concepts associated with the generation distributed, cooling systems and their characteristics, the main problems caused by water in the cooling system, corrosion and how to prevent it with the use of inhibitors and different chemical treatments to condition the water, including reverse osmosis.

The Chilean bellflower, or Lapageria rosea, is a climber, endemic to central and southern Chile, whose flowers are mainly red in the wild, but that can appear in different shades when cultivated, they range from white to deep red through pink and light red with white spots. In addition to the historical account of its discovery, and how it came to be considered the national flower of Chile, this review describes the long way to determine the chemical structure of the compounds responsible for the Chilean bellflower’s color, the volatile compounds emitted by the flower and the sugars present in its nectar.

Preservatives and preservation techniques give us access to the rich flavors of fresh food we all love while being away from the fields. Preservation techniques have been known since antiquity but they became more sophisticated after the Industrial Revolution as cities became more populous. Nowadays, preservatives are part of our daily life. They have become even more important as our society reaches for sustainability and food waste reduction. But the reader probably has a burning question: are they safe? The short answer is yes, they are safe. Let’s take a look at the history and chemistry of some of the most common chemicals used in food preservation techniques. With this information, the readers can decide on their own.

At first glance it may seem strange to connect chemistry with cosmetics. Nothing further from the truth since both are a constant in our daily lives. The average person uses at least 5 cosmetic products daily, which translates into at least 150 different chemical compounds being applied into our bodies every day. Unfortunately, an increase in misinformation has led to an ever-growing fear of chemical compounds.  Consequences of the misrepresentation of chemicals, good and bad, have plagued the cosmetics industry. One of the most affected compounds by misinformation are parabens, which are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products. The consensus of both scientific and dermatological community is that parabens are not only risk-free, but also highly beneficial to stop contamination with fungi and other microorganisms. Currently, parabens are considered some of the least allergenic preservatives available, with rates of contact sensitization between 0.5% to 1.4%. Nevertheless, consumers and clean beauty movement supporters have it classified as a high-risk product that should be completely banned. On one hand, by not using parabens, products risk being contaminated, on the other hand laboratories are now trying to find other alternatives to these compounds. Being well informed about the ingredients of a product is the consumers’ right of, and an obligation of the industry, but it does not relieve the public to its responsibility to be well-informed. At the same time, the responsibility of the scientific community is to try to inform the public using simpler terms and making science accessible to everyone.

This manuscript introduces the concept of radioimmunotherapy in cancer, as well as the main advantages of targeted α-therapy (TAT) over other methods. The discussions focus mainly on the therapeutic use of 225Ac and 213Bi radioisotopes in the recent technique and their main advantages over conventional methods. The properties of these radionuclides and their means of extraction and production are also discussed. Then, their fundamental properties are discussed along with the coordination chemistry of both isotopes. In addition, an overview of considerations for radiopharmaceutical design, and available bifunctional chelating agents for actinium and bismuth, is provided. Finally, some preclinical and clinical studies involving both isotopes are described, as well as the future perspectives of this promising treatment for cancer.
