The first Jesuit missionaries who arrived to the central desert of the peninsula of Baja California, to the northeast of Mexico, in the eighteenth century, made descriptions and chronicles about the languages, customs, material culture and forms of organization of the human groups that lived there. The letters, diaries, chronicles and drawings made by the missionaries during their work of evangelization in the peninsula are very useful for historians, anthropologists and archaeologists, since they are sources of information that contribute substantially to knowledge about ancient ways of life, subsist-ence strategies and forms of mobility linked to obtaining certain resources throughout the year.

This work intends to inquire about the functioning of the Inquisitorial Justice of the Limeño Tribunal, since it was established in 1569 until a few years after the turning into to the XVII century, in the regions of Tucumán, Rio de la Plata and Paraguay; as well as some aspects of the set-up established relationship between the Inquisition and the Jesuits in the region. To achieve this aim, we question the origins of these relations between the Society of Jesus and the Inquisition, institutions of very different aims and modes of action, even though both were strongly linked to the Spanish Monarchy. And more specifically, what was the nature of this link in the governorates of southern Peru, where the Society of Jesus had placed one of its main centres of evangelization. Who and through what legal instruments the Jesuits participated in the exercise of inquisitorial justice and, as was their performance in this sense; these are the main questions of this research.

The aim here is to present a transcription of the first chapter of an anonymous manuscript catechism in both Língua Geral and, partially, in Latin, which was very probably composed by one of the German-speaking Jesuits that worked in the Amazon region in the mid-18th century. This chapter deals with the matters of the name “Christian” and the practice of the sign of the cross. The transcription is accompanied by notes on the translation into Portuguese, and is prefaced by the presentation of hypotheses concerning the author of the catechism, the historical context of its production, and the linguistic situation of the missions of Grão-Pará in the 1700s.

The “Discovery” of America and the reactions of the Europeans due to the encounter with a never before imagined cultural “Other” gave rise to new philosophical genres: the utopia and the essay. The utopia begins with Thomas More’s homonymous libellus (1516). Utopical are also Peramás’ De administratione guaranitica comparate ad Republicam Platonis commentarius (1791), as well as the political “sacred experiment” narrated in this text -the Guaraní Missions-. On the basis of an intercultural philosophical locus enuntiationis, the autor of this article outlines some considerations on the diverse significance the utopical genre has had in America, and she provides an ana-lytical rereading of this work, with the aim to show the limits of intercultural relations-hips carried out under asymmetrical conditions.

The church of the Jesuits in Córdoba was the depository of an important sum of paintings. Few have remained after the pillage that suffered after the expulsion. One of the most significant is a representation of San Ignacio, which is today, along with another San Francisco de Borja, in the residence of the Jesuits. This work is framed within the theological and evangelical project of the Society of Jesus, evidencing the Baroque theatricality represented by the global cuaternidad, in a symbolic and reiterated Jesuit iconography.

The historiography is a science of the Renaissance and consists of detecting the bibliography of the bibliographies developed by an institution dedicated to letters, sciences and arts. The present study focuses on the Jesuit vision of the bibliography of the bibliographies developed in the Hispanic world from 1773 to 1999, since it becomes the naviga-tional chart for interpreting this complicated world.
