Resumen
Documentary films have been consecrated as essential for the understanding of the15-M movement. They unite the proposals of the movement, which have radically altered the current Spanish political landscape. They also inspect the Spanish democracy as a direct consequence of a democratic transition which has been widely viewed as a failure. This article considers these issues and highlights the importance of the public square, both as a physical space and as a symbol of a desire for a more participatory democracy.

Resumen
This essay offers an analysis of Icíar Bollaín’s 2014 documentary film En tierra extraña (In a Foreign Land), which provides a look at the crisis from the perspective of one sector it affected profoundly: the new Spanish emigrants. By focusing on the representation of spaces in the film and on the stories about the recession captured in the testimonies of various Spanish immigrants in Edinburgh, the study investigates the narrative and aesthetic devices that the filmmaker employs to narrate the repercussions of the crisis in two distinct geographic locations (Spain and Scotland).

Resumen
The article investigates the tension between private and public space that informs the dramatic and spatial structures of Spanish short films about the crisis. The plots of these films are often one-way passages from the inside to the outside that admit no turning back. Attempts to return to the abandoned private spaces fail and reveal that these spaces have changed. This transformation of private space symbolizes a crisis of identity that the films’ characters have to confront. In some films the characters fail if they remain on the inside, while those who accept the challenge are linked to the outside as a public sphere. Thus, two identities are interwoven with two representations of space: the inside corresponds to traditional middle-class values like individualism and hedonism, while the outside represents collective and political attitudes. Therefore, these short films can be viewed as an epic of the development of political awareness.

Resumen
This essay discusses a series of films whose characters become criminals due to thepeculiar circumstances created by the economic crisis in Spain. These titles somehow echo a previous era of Spanish history and cinematography: the Spanish Transition and the quinqui films. This study will thus analyze the cinematic spaces depicted in these films, which must be understood as metaphors for the recession in which the country is mired. These works seem to suggest the need of a new social pact through the outbreak of violent responses by those who have experienced a significant degradation in their life conditions and have lost confidence in public institutions.

Resumen
This paper aims at defining the concept of cinema of austerity, establishing its chronology and identifying its primary examples among the feature films made in the Iberian Peninsula between 2007 and 2016. These films will be discussed from a sociological, cultural and aesthetic perspective in order to analyse the representations of Iberian societies during this period. This research will particularly focus on elements such as the types of characters appearing in those movies –their human geography– and the types of spaces in which the narratives take place –their symbolic geography.
