Resumen
This article analyzes the novels Passageiro do fim do dia (2010), by Brazilian writer Rubens Figueiredo, and Mano de obra (2002), by Chilean writer Diamela Eltit in their use of textual strategies that relinquish the objective portrayal of gruesome violence as a marker of the inequalities that characterize the social contexts of these narratives. Through the fragmentation of the social, psychological, and physical dimensions of the characters, Figueiredo and Eltit expose forms of oppression framed in a mode of accumulation of capital and exploitation of labor. Using dialectical structures of inclusion and exclusion, the emphasis on the physicality of the body emerges as a palpable reference of social inferiorization and segregation of the characters.

Resumen
During the years 2007-2015 multiple Argentinian playwrights and filmmakers approached the world of television through a vast production of fictional series issued by the Public TV Channel. The participation of these artists in broadcast format and the transformations that occured in the fictions of the studied period are part of a process of legislative, technological, institutional and aesthetic changes which seek to legitimize contemporary fiction television with so-called “quality products”. In the present article I intend to analyse Diego Lerman’s La casa (2015), a paradigmatic example of the transformations in the national public fiction of the period addressed.

Resumen
We propose to analyze the participation of the short film in the Argentine modern cinema, in order to verify its early promoter role in the renewal but with the ultimate aim to transcend the traditional concept that postulates the short film as a mere stepping stone to feature films. The Argentine short film within the period 1950-1976 brought together various forms and functions, whether aesthetic or political. Putting into context the short film in different national cinemas in the world during that same stage supports our premises.

Resumen
This article examines the widely-circulated images of two disabled bodies in the Colombian mass media. This representation of two Colombian soldiers disabled by landmines in the armed conflict seems to challenge media images of body normativity. In this analysis, I propose that, while certainly making visible these bodies, the portraits of the soldiers, reproduce normative of masculinity and aesthetic beauty.

Resumen
In 1818, the Swiss physicians Rengger and Longchamp travelled to Paraguay with the aim of studying its natural history. As a consequence of a failed murder attempt against Supreme Dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, they were forced to stay there until 1825. Their experiences gave birth to the Ensayo histórico sobre la revolución del Paraguay. Considering the peculiarity of dictatorial rule at the beginning of the nineteenth century and the increasing importance of sentiment, the present article attempts to analyse this essay in light of the history of emotions. Beyond the dichotomy reason/emotion, the expressed feelings (fear, mistrust, honour, nostalgia, etc.) and the emerging emotional regime may legitimise or discredit the dictator.

Resumen
This article discusses how, in the work of Pedro Almodóvar, characters are constituted as moral subjects through desire. First, desire is understood as the guiding principle of the characters’ actions. Second, desire appears as a structuring element of the meanings attributed to the body, gender, and sexuality. The analysis of both the ways the films are built and their regimens of visibility reveals differences in the construction of desire for each gender. Thus, those films both disjoint some of the hegemonic cinematographic gender codes as well as reiterate old patterns, reaffirming the same structure of domination they supposedly want to displace. Ultimately, this ambiguity contradicts, or at least relativizes, the transgressive element commonly attributed to the work of this filmmaker.

Resumen
Vicente Riva Palacio is considered by Mexican historiography as one of the most important intellectuals in the construction of the nation’s project of the modern Mexican Republic. He was a social actor with diverse profiles: military, humanist, writer and politician, an also an intellectual paradigm. In addition, the understanding of his life and work has also generated different definitions of the intellectual in Mexico. Thus, the historiography of such studies would allow us to establish a general definition of the liberal Mexican intellectual of the late nineteenth century.

Resumen
This article examines the role that the cultural and political magazine Tendencias (1991-2000) played in El Salvador’s transition to peace. Specifically, it studies how Tendencias’s contributors tackled some of the key issues of the transition—the failure to reform the economy, the undermining of the peace process by economic and political elites, and the inability of the FMLN to respond to the new political situation—and argues that the magazineserved as a counter to El Salvador’s culture of ideological entrenchment. By fostering democratic and rational-critical discussion, Tendencias opened up a new “public sphere” for El Salvador and gave voice to a vibrant and tenacious intellectual culture that has often been overlooked.
