This study analyzed the urban heat island (UHI)of the Metropolitan District of Quito with the calculation ofsurface temperature of multispectral Landsat 7 ETM andLandsat 8 OLI/TIRS. With these imagens were calculatedindices of vegetation NDVI and constructions NDBI, andare established the relationship of these variables withArticle history:Received 26 Februeary 2018Accepted 28 May 2018Este trabajo fue apoyado por la Universidad Internacional SEK, Facultad deCiencias Naturales y Ambientales.Diana Paola Baño Saltos, Autor Jr. pertenece a la Universidad InternacionalSEK del Ecuadortemperature surface through application of the correlationlinear of Pearson. The results indicate that heat islands aremore pronounced towards rural areas where there is acombined land use between horizontal construction, industries and equipment, compared to urban areas wherethere is prevalence of vertical developments. The NDVIvegetation index presents an inverse correlation withsurface temperature and the rate of constructions, directcorrelation, while surface temperatures obtained fromLandsat 7 and 8 Landsat images are not comparable. Ingeneral, characterization of urban heat islands is bestexplained through the analysis of the relationship betweensurface temperature and land use.

Technological development during the first decade of this century provoked a boom of user-generated, web-shared media. In geography, such trend is called Volunteered Geographic Information; OpenStreetMap (OSM) is its most famed project. While several research has been made about OSM -particularly, concerning its quality-, none of such has been made in Ecuador in despite that, indeed, there has been mapping in this country. This paper proposes an Exploratory Data Analysis as first approach to understanding the features of OSM. Study area is the Manuela Sáenz administrative zone of Quito. Free GIS and programming software were used, while applying non-graphic and graphic methods. Results are displayed in several plots and phenomena are discussed, regarding number of keys and nodes, area condition, and building, highway and source keys. The paper concludes identifying OSM aspects for further research.

This paper presents a software module for real-timeauralization that was used to recreate the acoustic perceptionproduced by a sound obstacle in virtual and real environments. This module fulfills the function of inserting, in any audio signal,a three-dimensional positioning effect that allows the listenerto determine the location of a sound source within the chosentest environment. This effect was achieved with a processingtechnique called segmented convolution and several functionscontained in a database of head related impulse responses(HRIRs). The module was tested in a real environment anda virtual one. In the real test environment, the user had astereoscopic camera that fulfilled the function of an obstacledetector, as well as a computer and headphones, in which themodule was installed and three-dimensional sound alerts weregenerated. In this way, the effects could be recorded, analyzed, discussed and finally validated.

The aim of this article is to study the role of StrategicScanning in innovation processes. We seek to answer the followingquestion: how can Strategic Scanning feed an innovative designactivity? We mobilized the C-K theory which models the logic ofcreation in companies and the method of the same name. Based ona case study of 65 participants, we conducted a Strategic Scanningstudy to feed an innovative C-K design approach. The results showthat Strategic Scanning helps to provide knowledge in a C-Kprocess. It helps either to build the knowledge base of noviceparticipants, or to validate the existing knowledge of expertparticipants. The Strategic Scanning activity also makes it possibleto start the first disjunction mechanism C→K from the C0concept.

The goal of this project is the implementation of a simulation that gets the vital information of a soccer player’s body through Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN). With this objective in mind, several programming language environments are compared with each other. This simulation only has one sample to follow according to the proposal. Therefore, the challenge is to create a new simulation sample and other platforms to compare the accuracy and delay between communications. WBANs are not conceived to carry large amounts of data, according to the WSN (wireless sensor network) concept. This entails a problem when designing applications for this kind of networks. Lastly, in respects to the results that will be presented. The results will be about which one simulation is better or what differences lay between the different environments of development.

The compiling of the population data, to establish its socioeconomic factors, is a high-cost task for governments and regulatory organizations due to the need for financial and human resources. This limitation makes it almost impossible to count on immediate updated socioeconomic population information. This article compiles a series of alternative data sources and methods that can be applied to reduce the costs and the time required to update such information. The review focus on how these sources and methods have been used in developing countries during time, highlighting the solutions for satisfying the need of updated socioeconomic factors of the population.

In the market, there are very sophisticatedbiofeedback tools, such as those developed by meyerPT [1] orBiometric Ltd. [2], which provide information to the patientthrough tones and allows the generation of records and show datain real time. However, the cost of these tools makes difficult theaccess to them. This problem is what make the patients apply tothe expertise of a specialist and a qualitative valuation. For thisreason, this project focused on developing a friendly userbiofeedback interface created in MATLAB, which brings valuableinformation about muscular signals generated by the human bodyto avoid the subjectivity that may exist in the traditional method, reaching better results in less time thanks to the continuemonitoring and data recorders. The interface shows visualindicators, which are used to feedback the patient, in order topresent the execution of the muscular exercises at a certain forceintensity, analyses the muscular fatigue during the training andcreate a data record to identify the evolution of the muscleaccording to the developing of the therapy sessions.

Through a review of the Ecuadorian science, technology and innovation surveys and of several empirical studies on Ecuador; this article describes the Ecuadorian business sector, its science and technology organizations and their interactions; with the objective of examining the capacity of the Ecuadorian innovation system to move towards a productive structure based on the use of knowledge. The analysis indicates that Ecuador does not yet have an innovation system with learning capacity, which allows such a transition, when the technological conditions are propitious.

In this article, the main aim is to show how Clorinda Matto de Turner used in her literature the figure of Ricardo Palma and his stylistic prose. I have noted that in most of her work, Turner reflects in Ricardo Palma’s literature and criteria so that she could conveyed smoothly and genuinely the humoristic style and prose to “Tradiciones Cuzqueñas”. Besides, there are some similar topics in her literature as for instance, “Peruvian Independence”, “Customs in Peruvian towns, especially Cuzco in the colonial age”, “The affair among Spanish conquerors and demoiselles”, “Life of religious military kings”, respectively. All of those topics were used to convey Peruvian culture and customs as a whole. Thus, “Tradiciones Cuzqueñas” genuinely conveys how Clorinda Matto de Turner used Ricardo Palma’s rhetoric style to express the culture, customs, aptitudes and symbolism of Cuzco.

This study explains the addition of two Peruvian Dominican Saints: Saint Rose of Lima and Saint Martin de Porres as literary characters in the Traditions of Ricardo Palma. The author portrays them in their human dimension, tied to their ordinary and humble daily chores. The tradition is a brief narrative, written in a colloquial form of the language, with a humorous background scattered throughout the text, yet focused on some sections of it. They were chosen because of their roots to the people, how appealing they are to the reader, in aspects of their lives defined as secular literature.
