The essay establishes a comparison between the story of the Inca Garcilaso about Aguirre, and the story that Ricardo Palma calls “The ears of the mayor.” Likewise, a comparison is made between the account of the melons and the natives who believed they had been betrayed by a letter; and the story of Palma that are titled “Carta sings”. When comparing it will be possible to notice the similarities in the narrative plot and the image of the historical personages; But also the notorious differences in the treatment of the story and the discursive style. It mentions why, probably, the writer of the traditions does not mention the Inca Garcilaso being that was the predecessor of the narrative proposal.

a narrative resource used by many writers, the anecdote was an essential element in the work of don Ricardo Palma. In fact, the presence of this element managed to enrich and give vitality to that impressive and vast detailed picture of historical events and characters that managed to create the writer of Lima with his pen. It is precisely in El Demonio de los Andes, one of the traditional works of the traditionalist, where history and anecdote complement each other in the best way delighting many readers, but also giving many critics to question the work of Palma as Historian for the recurrent abuse of the anecdote. The present work seeks to delimit the boundaries between history and fiction and the use of the anecdote in the work of the traditionalist.

Nevertheless, there is a veil of mystery about the originality of some words and phrases attributed to the Venezuelan general. In this sense, the present work offers us some ideas on this subject.

Critical studies on the Peruvian Traditions have addressed the treatment of space, eminently urban (Lima) in the work, pointing to the importance of the characters and “intrahistory” on descriptive aspects of Peruvian landscape and nature. Nevertheless, a revision of the Traditions from the point of view of the treatment of geography, landscape and nature, reveals fragments in which it acquires an importance that, although overlapping, imposes routes to the urban history and, therefore, to the stories rescued and recreated by the traditionist.

Consecrated as one of the best writers in Latin America, don Ricardo Palma maintained an intense epistolary correspondence with renowned characters from Peru and abroad. In his long list of epistles, the names of women writers such as Juana Manuela Gorriti, Clorinda Matto de Turner, Mercedes Cabello de Carboneda, among others, were distinguished with whom he managed to share various issues related to the literary field, the political scene, the private sphere, among others themes. Precisely, the present work deals with the message of these letters, which give us an idea of t he degree of admiration and confidence that the writer from Lima had by these female writers.

The Traditions of Ricardo Palma have enjoyed great recognition since its appearance, but also they have been object of criticism and disqualification by some intellectuals and writers as Manuel Gonzales Prada, the indigenists and Sebastian Salazar Bondy. The last one, one of the most distinguished key figures from the Generation of ’50, in Lima the Hideous, accuses the traditionist to be the main myth creator of an idyllic Lima and the “colonial Arcadia”; of an ancient vision that should be dismissed for being retrograde. This position has widespread to the rest members of his generation. This article demonstrates that this generalization is erroneous, since most of the members of this generation consider Palma as a classic and recognize his values as creator and in his role in Peruvian literature formation.
