The minifiction is a narrative form characterized by its extreme brevity that has caught the attention of researchers during the last almost four decades. However, at present it is not the only literary phenomenon that has emerged in recent years, because they have revived other literary genres, also very brief, such as aphorisms, short poetry, which in one way or another have led to the emergence of a textual modality that has been called “micronovela”. Therefore, our objective is to present some of its characteristics, based on the analysis of four books, in order to formulate a tentative definition of this textual modality.

During the last decades, microfiction (or sudden fiction, or flash stories, or short short stories) has become very popular in Hispanic literature. The academic criticism focused on the intrinsic unclassifiability of this peculiar short form, that blends aphorisma, fragment, anecdote, joke, among others. The proliferation of anthologies provides inspiring materials for pondering on the structure of these very short texts The curator, besides choosing the authors and fiction to include in the collection, also has to organize the selected texts into homogeneous sections, therefore establishing groups underlying a theoretical postulation on t he nature of microfiction itself. So every anthology not only provides reading itineraries but also suggests processes of canonization and reveals different critical approaches. In this paper we will analyze a selection of the anthologies of Hispanic microfiction published in the last decades in order to point out if and how microfiction has been more rigidly defined and to what extent it is possible to talk about an Hispanic contemporary “micro-canon”.

This work aims to highlight the relevance of what G. Genette called paratextuality in 1989. That is to say, the relation the text maintains with its paratext in which we are going to designate as the diptych of the war for drugs, that is the great novel composed of The Power of the Dog and The Cartel. The paratextual elements, particularly the titles of parts and chapters, and the epigraphs, represent a parallel discourse that summarises and anticipates the content, and helps the reader to create a context of reception while lends a value of literariness to the story, together with other methods such as agility in dialogues, prolepses of both beginnings, and the distance that looks for impartiality and intrigue with regard to certain scenes.

This article analyzes the importance of humanist photography as microfictional reference. It raises the relationship between flash fiction and humanist photography: similarities and expressive possibilities, since both artistic disciplines use common rhetorical tools. This study starts with the hypothesis of the expressive possibilities of the image by itself and later discovers the great convergence between humanistic photography and microfiction through relational analysis. The research work aims to offer that humanistic photography uses expressive tools similar to flash story. A search for empathy and a quick impact blow later developed in mass media, social networks and the Internet mixing images with short texts.

This article analyzes the frequent projection of childhood in the microfiction, for which the presence of the child as theme, character and narrator of its pages is highlighted. It analyzes the main themes in these texts: childhood as a lost paradise, the value of initiatory experiences, the child as a subaltern subject. The rhetorical strategies that define the child –“infans” meaning “he who can’t speak”- are mentioned too: the ellipses of his discourse, his use of images and sensory referents and of present and perfect tenses, which discover him as a tense character. All these traits link childhood with the practice of microfiction.

Vignette has found in Instagram an analogous place to what Facebook or Twitter represent to flash fiction The illustrated narrative of Flavita Banana works as an example that relates two ways of expression in flash fictions: word and image. Their confluence in this Barcelonese author’s vignettes demonstrates the expressive and humorous richness of illustrated micronarratives, desautomatizes and invit es to a reevaluation of this gender boundaries.
