The concept of threat is discussed as a variable in social research, particularly as predictor of prejudice in intergroup relations. Two traditions in social sciences that have developed theories of threat are examined. The former is a sociological theory formulates by George Herbert Blumer and posteriorly developed by contemporary sociologists. The second theory of threat is located in the social psychology and was developed by Walter Stephan and colleagues. Both views are showed and compared in the framework of a Costa Rican’s social research.

This article deals with the process of increasing precarious jobs in Latin America during the period of structural reforms. Its main goal is to explore the theoretical foundations and scope of the concept of labor precariousness. It also seeks to analyze the conceptual and empirical linkages between the structural adjustment process and the rising of precarious jobs in the new economic model. It states that although this concept has been used in an empirical way, there is a need to approach it from a theoretical perspective, in order to have a better comprehension of the labor and social changes it conveys.

This paper offers some elements of discussion to conceptualize the groups emerging in the context of computer-mediated-communication. First, the notion of community is examined using some theoretical perspectives in the field of social sciences. Second, the main conceptions of the relation between the virtual and the real are discussed, applied also to the concept of community. In conclusion, an alternative definition of “virtual community” is suggested in order to account for the sociotechnical exchanges that characterize the Internet.
