The present article discusses in the approach of contemporary architecture its correlation with lightweight construction systems in wood. Analyzes the work built by the office of Eric Owen Moss Architects because of its recognized production by evaluate the design strategies, the language, the materiality and tectonic issues, etc. The proposed method is based on the case study, the analysis of Eric Owen Moss’ 3555 work Hayden, because this allows the verification of the role of technology and the development of light construction systems in contemporary architecture configurations. The research concludes the importance of contemporary architects experimenting with new technologies, such as light wood systems overcoming constructive traditions, but these should reflect on their design process in a critical way, assessing if it is appropriate to the site, the tectonic culture, and the environment.

This article is part of a thesis that proposes a dialogue between sociocultural life and public policies of urban development as a way of highlighting urbanity wasted in the squares in the city of Joinville. The objective is to present a global study that maps and analyzes the existing square spaces in the urban network of Joinville-SC and its relation with the urban morphology of the city. It is evident how important are the free public spaces of squares for the life of the city, helping in the connections and compositions of the urban landscape, allowing encounters and disagreements that can guarantee a certain social interaction, providing the conviviality with different social groups, creating a public sphere and urbanity. The methodology is based on the survey of the spaces through mappings that considered the use of the soil, the average monthly income, the population density and the location in relation to the consolidated urban network. As a result of these analyzes, it is identified that the municipality of Joinville has few square areas and that these do not constitute a cohesive free space system that gives quality urban life, as contemporary urban theories point out, and it is understood that the use of public spaces can help create thisnetwork.

Universidade São Judas Tadeu – Programa de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu em Arquitetura e Urbanismo
This work has been developed within the scope of the Urban Ecology Laboratory (LEUR), at the Graduate Program in Urbanism (PROURBFAU- UFRJ). Objectively, architectural projects and urban projects, even when framed to a single and specific category: sustainability, have different characteristics. Departing from the basic foundations (and original) of “Our Common Future” (1987), we can find evident similarities between the two practices, in the notoriously established fields: social, economic and environmental. The characteristics of each of these fields, gradually, emerge within their blurred specificities. However, in an assertive reductionism, in the context of the thematic challenge proposed, “sustainability: strategy or goal in the production of buildings and the city?”, the strict idea of “goal” (in the sense of target) could be attributed to architecture projects. On the other hand, urban projects should be associated to the definition of the term “strategy” (“in the sense of operation of available resources or conditions to achieve certain objectives”).

This work presents, comments and translates the text On architectural symbols (1854), written by the architect and theorist Gottfried Semper (1803-1879). Best known for his masterpiece Der Stil, Semper was in the midst of Victorian industrialisation when he wrote the text. It is a lecture given at the Department of Practical Art of the Schools of Design in London, where the author presents, among others, his considerations on architectural ornament, a theme that will be the subject of passionate theoretical disputes from then on and which at that time was mixed with the debate on style. It is believed that the translation and the reading are valid and timely not only for revealing the sophistication of the thinking of the time, but also for highlighting a theme that appears at the heart of the architectural debate today, that of ornamentation.

The valorization of public spaces and the restructuring of public cultural policies, in all spheres of government, especially the municipal ones, have stimulated the discussion about how the implementation of these cultural policies is reflecting in the urban landscape. Joinville is the case study, because presents an advanced public policies of culture, which articulate municipal public spaces, especially through the promotion of cultural events. This article proposes to delineate the relationship between the use of an open public space and the accomplishment of a cultural event, for this characterizes the municipal cultural sector and defines the Nereu Ramos Square as a study cut for field research that includes behavioral observations and interview with users of this space. The article presents some of the results obtained during masters research, which indicate a good acceptance of the municipal cultural policies and an enrichment of the public life of the square, by the presence of the events.
