Querejeta Barceló, Alejandro
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
What powers do writing and text keep? Being and seeming converge in it and the individual mark constitutes the style of this exercise of language that builds history. In this analysis, Alejandro Querejeta portrays the main works of the French philosopher Roland Barthes, at the 100th anniversary of his birth. With his essays, Barthes laid the foundations of hypertextuality. The remembranza closes with a writing of the essayist about the connotation and the denotation of the photographic message.

Benesch, Susan
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
Violent discourse detonates violence. A song that proclaims firing could lead to genocide. In this article, Susan Benesch highlights the power of the word of oppressors and oppressed as subtle weapons in violating rights. Malema's example when he sang Dubulu iBhunu, a historical hymn against apartheid in Africa, guides this narrative in which many linguistic battlefields converge.

Women face great challenges to enter to information technologies and assume leadership roles. Facing with this reality, Powerful Girls community emerges in Latin America. Their ambassadors in Ecuador tell how this experience incubated since 2017 is progressing because more women are studying journalism, but that index is not reflected in newsrooms where men duplicate their presence in front of women. This community encourages collaborative work over the individual, and promotes horizontal learning and ties among its members.

Universidad San Francisco de Quito
Does television lose the throne of greatest mass media in the face of the Internet age? Mario Javier Troya analyzes the complexity of this technological revolution and shows the alternatives that the industry has and contrasts them with the demands of the "prosumidors". Grabe, Elizabeth
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
Historically, the industries in the world have been marked by gender differences. The media industry has not been the exception. The most common way of understanding gender has been like a binary man versus woman and, although the concept is now taking a more fluid form, it is not surprising that the traditional conception of gender has profoundly influenced our understanding and use of information generated by the media. From how women are portrayed in the media to how the news is perceived by users, gender plays an important role that needs attention.

Oquendo Sánchez, Christian
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
The investigation of communication in Ecuador suffers from fundamental deficiencies. In the first installment of this article, Christian Oquendo identifies the operation modes of schools and researchers in this area of knowledge. Deontology and the tools at the service of journalism remain the same in all newsrooms and latitudes. However, a media with a world vocation such as Radio France International offers a more global reading of the world than local or national media. This reading is very dependent on the relations between the RFI correspondent network, its central redaction and the editors in Paris. Maintaining editorial independence with public financing is possible, explains Cécile Mégie, Director of RFI.

Sanderson, Tom
Universidad San Francisco de Quito
Journalistic research is based on data rather than statements. In the digital age, the challenge of doing data journalism is global visualization. It not only implies showing numbers and statistics, but also customizing them for audiences, to discuss them in their social networks. Journalists must find a story to show that extensive information or big data in a digestible way. Here the keys that Sanderson explained during a workshop in Quito at the International Journalism Congress in Debate 2017.
