Introduction: due to its long duration, the process of eruption of permanent dentition may be affected by a number of systemic and/or local factors. Objective: identify the initial age for the eruption of the first permanent molars and the moment of their occlusion among students from a school located south of Mexico City. Methods: a longitudinal descriptive study was conducted at Espartaco elementary school south of Mexico City. The study sample consisted of 53 students (31 girls / 22 boys) whose parents granted their informed consent. The variables studied were sex, chronological age and eruption of the first permanent molars. The sample was checked every three months by two qualified examiners in a well-lit place using dental mirrors. The following criteria were applied: unerupted, initial eruption and functional occlusion. Further examination was performed to include all occluded molars. Estimation was made of central tendency and dispersion measures by chronological age (initial eruption and functional occlusion), as well as the average duration of the eruption process. Data were processed with the statistical software SPSS version 21. Results: initial eruption age was the following: 6.69 years for the first permanent upper right molars, 6.68 for the upper left, 6.67 for the lower right, and 6.59 for the lower left. The first molar to occlude was the upper right (7.29 years) and the last ones were the two lower molars (7.56). Overall average time to reach occlusion was 0.6 year for the upper right molar, 0.7 for the upper left, 1.1 for the lower right and 1 year for the lower left. Conclusions: in the population studied average age for the start of eruption of the first permanent molar was 6.6 years. Among boys the first lower molars are the ones that start eruption and the last to reach occlusion.

Minimal intervention in cariology has been defined as the philosophy of dental care that deals with the treatment of the first occurrence, early detection and treatment of dental caries. Resin infiltration is one of the techniques used for early treatment and arrest of incipient lesions. The objective is to show the usefulness of fluid resins for infiltration of a first and second lower permanent molar with an incipient dental caries lesion. A 17 year-old male patient with a healthy history attended dental consultation with dark brown point spots on the lower left hemiarch near the central pit and on the vestibular groove of 36 and 37, respectively, of not more than 1 mm in depth. Incipient dental caries lesions were diagnosed and it was decided to perform infiltration of low viscosity composite or fluid resin in a single visit. Use of fluid composite resins is suitable for infiltration of incipient enamel caries lesions, for it prevents spread and seals the gaps in the affected enamel. It is a minimal intervention technique in cariology providing immediate solution to these processes as well as greater ease to solve dental caries disease balancing esthetic expectations with expectations related to the maintenance of healthy dental structures.

October 1925. He entered the University of Havana in 1944 to study Dentistry; during his life as a university student he excelled in baseball, he was a monitor (delegate at that time) of the subjects Operatory and General Pathology; in these years he collaborated with the Movimiento Union Revolutionary Insurrection that integrated the University Student Federation (FEU) of the School of Dentistry; his academic results were excellent. He graduated from the University of Havana on July 11, 1949 as a Doctor in Dental Surgery; He moved to Placetas and worked in the office with his father; next to him began his revolutionary activity after March 10 when Batista's military coup; He was very active in clandestine work, as a member of the Revolutionary Directorate, the 26th of July Movement, the Authentic Organization, the Popular Socialist Party and the Insurrectional Nation Movement. At the triumph of the Revolution he held different responsibilities and encomiendas for the organization of the municipality in this new stage. In 1960 he was appointed Municipal Commissioner of Placetas; During this time he attended the National School "Ñico López" and participated in the Literacy Campaign in 1961. He was a member of the Provincial Party Bureau in Las Villas until 1968.His intellectual work was very active as of 1967: he began his first years in the postgraduate improvement since he is selected to receive a course of oral surgery at the National Institute of Stomatological Improvement (INPE), this represented a great start in the world of the Maxillofacial Surgery because in 1975 he graduated as an I Degree Specialist in Maxillofacial Surgery at the "Manuel Fajardo" Teaching Hospital in Havana. His specialty completion work was a lip reconstruction technique, created by him for patients affected by lip cancer, and later recognized as the Castañón technique. This was his top research because it links the oncological criterion and the plastic vision, with it he achieved recognition in important events and medical journals, he was distinguished by the scientific community and the State Council for his contribution to the sciences. Years later he obtained the II Degree of the specialty. He collaborated with the teaching that was given to students of the last year at the School of Stomatology of Havana. His teaching work continued in Placetas because he was responsible and teaching collaborator of technical students in Stomatology; later he directed the school of dental assistants in the province. In the Provincial Teaching Hospital of Villa Clara today "Celestino Hernández Robau", his intellectual work was on the rise: he was the founder of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and stood out in the training of specialists from the three central provinces. In 1980 he was appointed head of the Maxillofacial Surgery service, he participated during his life in a large number of provincial and national events; He was a very prominent anirist, he started in this movement in 1976 as his life president in the aforementioned hospital, about this organization he expressed: "The ANIR is my life, I achieved good results ...". In 1981 he was selected Outstanding Innovator and in 1986 Vanguardia Nacional. Its innovations also include: an instrument for mandibular prognathism operations using the Caldwell Letterman technique (guide hook) and a technique for eyelid reconstruction. The teacher Castanon, as we call him his disciples, loved science and studied it with fidelity, longing and dedication; in correspondence with his dedication have been the results he achieved, he managed not only to put his name among the most outstanding innovators in the country, but the entities he represented have also enjoyed such prestige, which was reflected in the press reports of those years. He published several articles in different national and foreign journals, and supervised various works of completion of the specialty of Maxillofacial Surgery. He was an excellent teacher, creative, much admired and loved by his students who will always follow his example of altruistic educator pending to educate and educate the new student generations. In his private life he formed an excellent family, his filial relationship was admirable and his example made his daughter and grandson embrace the career of Medicine; the first as a plastic surgeon and the second as a legal doctor. There was an excellent atmosphere of harmony in his family nucleus and of devotion and admiration towards his person that will never be able to disappear even with the passage of time.

Lymphangiomas are congenital malformations of the lymphatic vessels. They are rare in the oral cavity and when present in this area they may cause functional disturbances of the stomatognathic system. The objective is to report a case of cavernous lymphangioma of the dorsum of the tongue, reviewing the clinical and treatment features of the disease, with emphasis on the oral cavity location, mainly the tongue. A 17-year-old male patient presented with a lesion on dorsum of his tongue of approximately 10 years of evolution. The lesion had a pebbly appearance and a sessile base, and measured about 3 cm. The patient was submitted to surgical excision of the lesion, without any intercurrences. Currently, the patient is under clinical follow-up, without any clinical sign of tumor recurrence after 2 years of treatment. Surgical excision of the lesion seems to be the most adequate treatment for tongue lymphangiomas, with low rates of recurrence.

Introduction: there are three types of dens in dente: Type I, minimal invagination confined to the crown of the tooth which does not extend beyond the amelocemental junction; Type II, invagination extends to the pulp chamber, but remains within the root canal with no communication with the periodontal ligament; and Type III, invagination extends to the root of the affected tooth, beyond the cementoenamel junction. The term dilated odontoma is used to describe the most severe variant of invagination (Type III), which is characterized by crown and/or root dilation of the affected tooth. Objective: describe a rare case of a dilated odontoma shaped dens in dente in a mesiodens and its imaging findings, diagnosed by cone beam computed tomography. Case presentation: a 14-year-old male patient was referred for radiographic examination of the mandible and maxilla to determine the cause of abnormal tooth eruption chronology. Two mesiodens were found on the maxilla. Due to the peculiar morphology of the mesiodens on the right side, cone beam computed tomography was performed. Multiplanar reconstructions revealed an oval structure on the eruption path of the upper right central incisor, in contact with its palatal surface. Coronal and sagittal reconstructions showed that invagination extended beyond the cementoenamel junction, without any additional apical/lateral formation. Conclusions: the final diagnosis was dilated odontoma shaped type II dens invaginatus in a mesiodens.

Introduction: prediction is a major practice in health care and research nowadays. The development achieved by dental services in Cuba has contributed to reduce the incidence of oral cancer, but it is still a reason for concern that a large number of people are diagnosed with this condition every year. In this context, time series analysis is crucially important for disease surveillance and prediction. Objective: analyze the behavior of oral cancer incidence and mortality series to generate a prognosis with a three-year prediction horizon in the province of Ciego de Avila. Methods: a time-series retrospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted. An analysis was performed of the oral cancer time series, based on an annual incidence frequency for eight years (2007-2014) and a mortality rate for 12 years (2003-2014). Simple, fast, effective methods were used to obtain the prognosis: the least squares method and two-parameter exponential smoothing, which smooths local oscillations making it possible to appreciate the trend in the series. Use was made of the software EVIEWS 4.1. Results: regarding incidence, a prognosis was made of a point estimation of approximately 73 cases per year, with prediction intervals ranging between 59 and 87 for the next years. Regarding mortality, very narrow prediction intervals were obtained which range between 26 and 50, with a point estimation of approximately 37 deaths per year. Conclusions: behavior of the oral cancer incidence and mortality series in the province is on the increase, and it is estimated that it will continue to grow in the next three years.

Introduction: the basis of disease is the occurrence of disorders at the molecular level, so the health professional should be able to understand the varied internal manifestations of a disease caused by alterations in the biomolecules that systemically interact and the important role that the oxidative stress plays in this process. Objective: to make a literature review on the oxidative stress and the diseases affecting the oral cavity. Methods: a literature review was made in the period of September 2014 through January 2016. MEDLINE, PubMed and SciELO databases were consulted; the subject headings were oxidative stress in oral diseases in Spanish and in English. Several articles in English and Spanish and publications of the last five years, in addition to 6 articles published prior to this period, were all included. A total of 110 articles were reviewed, but for the study, 49 were selected on account of a more comprehensive approach on these topics. Data analysis and integration: the oxidative stress is closely related to periodontal disease, mucositis, pulpal diseases, Sjögren syndrome, burning mouth syndrome, oral aphthas and premalignant lesions such as leukoplakia and oral lichen planus. Conclusions: there is association of the oxidative stress and many other diseases affecting the oral cavity, which has an impact on the pathogenesis of many diseases.

Introduction: craniocervical posture disorders have been viewed as risk factors for orthopedic conditions and as separate conditions themselves, but there are not sufficient studies relating them to dental malocclusion. Objective: determine whether craniocervical posture disorders constitute a risk factor for malocclusion in patients cared for at Victoria de Santa Clara clinic from October 2012 to February 2013. Methods: an cross-sectional observational descriptive study was conducted for which two groups were formed: one with patients with malocclusion and the other with patients without malocclusion. Each group was composed of 90 patients. Ocular convergence, head rotation, and biclavicular plane alteration tests were used to determine the prevalence of craniocervical posture disorders. Results: female gender prevailed in the malocclusion group (55.55 %). The main factors identified were inheritance (85.55 %), deforming habits (63.33 %), premature tooth loss (43.33 %) and oral muscle anomalies (24.44 %). Prevalence of posture disorders was 97.77 % in the malocclusion group vs. 48.88 % in the control group, with a highly significant relationship to malocclusion and an odd ratio of 46.00. Conclusions: female gender prevailed in the malocclusion group, whereas male gender predominated in the control group. The most prevalent risk factors are those related to malocclusion in a highly significant manner. A predominance was found of craniocervical posture disorders in the malocclusion group, with a highly significant relationship to malocclusion, a factor increasing 46 times the risk of suffering from the condition.
