Resumen
Introduction: overly delayed initial treatment is one the factors leading to persistent deformities after craniofacial trauma. Ideal mandibular reconstruction will create a solid dental arch which will articulate with the maxilla and restore speech, swallowing, mastication and esthetics. Objective: present a case of mandibular reconstruction of a posttraumatic mandibular deformity. Case presentation: a 49-year-old female patient can only feed herself liquid food after a craniofacial trauma undergone six months before. Physical examination revealed facial asymmetry with an increase in the vertical dimension of the lower third of the face and bilabial incompetence. Oral examination, on the other hand, revealed that the patient had a totally edentulous upper dental arch and partial prosthetic rehabilitation of the maxillary arch, impossibility of oral closure, and the presence of a visible step on the residual ridge at the 45 and distal 37. Diagnosis was a posttraumatic deformity due to bilateral mandibular fracture. Evaluation was carried out in joint coordination with the prosthesis service, and it was decided to perform surgical mandibular reconstruction by cervical approach, refracture, mandibular relocation with fixation of the occlusal guide, and placement of load bearing mandibular plates with bicortical screws. Outpatient follow-up was conducted after hospital discharge. The patient states that she is very pleased with her esthetic appearance and the functional improvement achieved. Conclusions: posttraumatic sequelae are frequently accompanied by damage to soft and hard tissues of the facial region with varying degrees of esthetic and functional alteration. Restoration by means of facial reconstruction is often a professional challenge which may be best tackled with a team, transdisciplinary therapeutic approach.

Resumen
Introduction: dental anxiety significantly affects the individual´s oral health because patients avoid dental treatment and obstruct the dentist in his performance when providing care. Therefore, it is important to manage alternatives to face this phenomenon as a way of controlling or eliminating it. Objective: to determine the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for dental anxiety. Methods: a literature review on the types of maneuvers to face dental anxiety published from 2010 to November 2015 was made. This search was specifically directed to scientific articles. One hundred and thirty five articles that addressed treatment of this disorder were found, excluding those presenting treatments for special patients or with phobias, and the final number was 102 papers. From the latter, 59 were taken to be considered according to the author´s criteria because they thoroughly described the study subject. Data analysis and integration: there are several alternative treatments for anxiety including the non-pharmacological methods such as music therapy, audiovisuals, virtual reality, hypnosis, among others, which are widely used by dental professionals. Moreover, pharmacological treatments mainly use drugs of choice such as benzodiazepines and nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen, being Midazolam the most used due to its good results. The combinations of both types of treatment are also effective. Conclusions: the use of music therapy, virtual reality and audiovisuals are the most used non-pharmacological treatments before this phenomenon. Midazolam and nitrous oxide in combination with oxygen are the most commonly used pharmacological treatments for dental anxiety, mainly in children.

Resumen
Introduction: the oral cavity is composed of many surfaces, each covered by a large number of bacteria forming the bacterial biofilm. Some of these bacteria have been implicated in oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis, which are among the most common bacterial infections in humans. Objective: by conducting a bibliographic review about the microbiota of oral cavity ecosystems improve our knowledge about the functions of the oral microbiota. Methods: a bibliographic review was conducted from February to June 2016 about the main microorganisms involved in the various oral cavity ecosystems. The search was based on the following inclusion criteria: oral microbiota, normal flora of the oral cavity, oral microbiome, primary and secondary oral cavity ecosystems, commensal microorganisms of the oral cavity. The review was based on search engines and platforms HINARI, SciELO and MEDLINE, and included 49 high impact journals from the Web of Science in which the topic was dealt with. 91 % of the literature were publications from the last five years. Data analysis and integration: an analysis was performed of the composition of the oral microbiota of the various ecosystems in the oral cavity. Conclusions: knowledge about the oral microbiota is a valuable tool to accurately identify the bacteria involved in complex oral biofilms, allowing us to better understand oral pathology, make effective diagnoses, and determine whether the changes leading to disease occur first in the host or on a microbial level.

Resumen
Introduction: according to the World Health Organization, smoking is one of the greatest public health problems worldwide. It is a well known fact that smoking interferes in different ways with the health of oral tissue, and is directly related to oral health problems. Objective: conduct a bibliographic review on the topic "Smoking and its impact on pulp and periodontal health". Methods: a careful review was conducted of scientific papers published in the last five years (2012-2016) about topics related to the following descriptor combinations: dental pulp "and" pulpectomy "and" periodontics "and" tobacco; dental pulp "and" pulpectomy "and" tobacco; pulpectomy "and" tobacco; periodontics "and" tobacco. The databases used were PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, SciELO and Lilacs. 36 studies were found based on the above descriptors. Data analyse and integration: the studies showed that the use of tobacco and its by-products directly impact the health and homeostasis of the pulp and periodontal tissues, and is related to tooth loss and an increase in the need for endodontic treatment. Conclusions: tobacco use significantly impacts pulp and periodontal health, causing physiological and metabolic alterations, and affecting the pulp connective tissue and the periodontal tissue.

Resumen
Introduction: the increase of the number of older people leads to an increase in the number of people going to the dental services looking for rehabilitation, and in most of cases, they do not adapt themselves to the new conditions. Objective: to identify the association of some factors that influence in the self-perception of oral health over the older adults with removable acrylic partial denture. Methods: observational and descriptive research study conducted in 150 randomly selected old people aged over 60 years with denture. The evaluation variables were age, sex, type of denture, schooling, previous experience and length of wear, in association with self-perception of oral health measured by the geriatric oral health assessment index. Results: fifty three percent of patients were 60 to 69 years-old and this age group exhibited the most frequent regular self-perception (49.3 %). Males (16 %) were the ones with more frequency of responses that agreed with good self-perception. The highest frequency of bad self-perception was found in high school and university students who together accounted for 19 %, in persons wearing upper denture (17.3 %) and in those with previous experience of denture (25 %). Twenty four percent of the group had been orally rehabilitated for 4 years or more with bad self-perception of oral health. Conclusions: less than 80 years of age, masculine sex, denture rehabilitation in both dental arches and previous experiences of wearing dentures are the factors that mostly relate to good self-perception of oral health in older adults.

Resumen
Objectives: identify by polymerase chain reaction technique ten bacterial species obtained from necrotic root canals, and analyze their association with signs and symptoms of apical periodontitis (pain, exudate and mobility) in a specific geographic area: Santiago de Compostela (northwestern Spain). Methods: a descriptive study was conducted based on a one-year sample collection period. Forty-three samples were taken from necrotic root canals, at a rate of one sample per patient, who had been previously examined for radiographic apical periodontitis, of which the signs and symptoms were described. Sterile absorbent paper points were used to extract the DNA samples, applying the phenol-chloroform technique. The product was amplified by polymerase chain reaction, using specific primers for ten microorganisms. The result was visualized by electrophoresis using a UV transilluminator. Outcomes were analyzed statistically to determine which microorganisms were present individually and which formed associations such as the so-called red complex, according to the signs and symptoms present in the apical periodontitis. Results: Fusobacterium nucleatum was the most common individual microorganism (83.72 % of the samples). As to the association of microorganisms with signs and symptoms, Porphyromonas endodontalis was found to be significantly associated with exudate (p< 0.05) and mobility (p< 0.05), while both Enterococcus spp. and Treponema denticola (p< 0.01) had a significant association with pain. Incidence of the red complex was 6 cases in all. Conclusions: Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus spp. were the microorganisms identified as displaying the highest percentages. Porphyromonas endodontalis showed the greatest statistical association with signs and symptoms of apical periodontitis.

Resumen
Introduction: vasoconstrictors are substances added to local anesthetics to lengthen their time of action, reduce their toxicity and enhance their local hemostatic effect. There is controversy about whether the use of vasoconstrictors in dental anesthetics has a negative effect on blood pressure and heart rate. Objective: determine the influence of vasoconstrictors added to dental anesthetics on blood pressure and heart rate. Methods: an experimental study was conducted with 120 patients divided in two groups of 60. These patients attended clinics in the Dental Academic Unit of the Autonomous University of Guerrero from July to December 2015. Group A was given just 3 % mepivacaine, whereas Group B was given mepivacaine with epinephrine at a concentration of 1:100 000. Measurements were taken of the patients' heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure at two moments: at baseline before infiltration and 5 minutes after infiltration. Statistical analysis was based on Student's t-test for independent samples. Results: heart rate and systolic blood pressure did not yield any statistically significant value. Diastolic blood pressure was the only hemodynamic parameter showing a statistically significant difference (t= 2.3; p= 0.02). Conclusions: the results obtained coincide with those reported by similar studies. At the doses recommended, epinephrine is safe for healthy patients as well as for those with controlled cardiovascular conditions.

Resumen
This paper shown an update in the development of collagens for the manufacture of scaffold which are used in tissue regeneration. The steps to obtain collagen scaffolds such as isolation, acid solubilization, purification, precipitation, lyophilization and fibrillogenesis were described. As collagen sources, which provide collagen, Type I such as skin and tendon of mammalians, fish, and birds were mentioned. The physics-chemical characterization using several methods by electrophoresis analysis, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimet-ric and mechanical assay were described. These tests permits to know the behavior of scaffolds. Applied cross-link method to improve physically stabilized to collagen were explained. Emphasis is placed on the limitations encountered during cell therapies and on the restoration of myocardial tissue using scaffolding, which are a challenge to be overcome by tissue engineering.
