The imitation of character voices and the relationship between narrator and characters are known to be fruitful domains for authors’ creativity and expressivity and thus constitute an intriguing translation problem that lacks clear solutions. In this study, we examine the translating of nonstandard forms of reported discourse as distinct representations of voices in the French and German translations of the second children’s book by the Swedish author P.O. Enquist Den tredje grottans hemlighet, 2010 (“The Secret of the Third Cave”). We set out to analyze the translations of two stylistic features of this text: the use of hybrid forms of direct and indirect speech and the use of italics to mark a cited discourse

Resumen
This article takes a critical look at writer Roald Dahl and his work, taking as its basis one of his less scrutinized books, Charlie and the great glass elevator. It examines the type of reader to whom his books are addressed, and his type of humour which is one of the central elements on which his literary output turns. Finally it focuses on cultural references, wordplays and onomatopoeias, by comparing the original text with the Spanish translation by Veronica Head in order to identify and analyze the various translation strategies used.

Resumen
The article investigates the mechanisms of self-censorship at work in translations of children’s literature in a Socialist state: the Socialist Republic of Slovenia that used to be a constituent part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The survey of the historical period shows that the Communist-led regime in the first decade after the Second World War systematically focussed on ideological (re)education of children, in particular it attempted to eradicate the influence of Christian religion. This ideological struggle is often clearly visible in retranslations of children’s literature that were created in this period. In this article the translational expression of the Socialist ideological imperative is then analysed by comparing two Slovene translations of the work for juvenile audience Rolf in the Woods by the founder of the Boy Scouts of America, Ernest Thompson Seton: the first translation was created before WWII, the second soon after it.

Resumen
This paper presents the results of an exploratory qualitative study aimed to gather information on the medical translator profile and the competences required for the practice of the profession. To do so, twelve translators with different training profiles (physicians, biologists and translators) working as freelancers or staff workers in different organizations were interviewed. The study allowed us to obtain data about the practice of medical translation (genres and topics translated, difficulties encountered, employers’ requirements, clients, etc.), and yielded some interesting differences in the translators’ professional career depending on the training profile or the employment status. The results also show that acquiring background medical knowledge or mastering medical documentary sources are key competences for professional practice, according to the respondents’ opinions

Resumen
In the circle of translation studies, Lawrence Venuti is usually considered the most prominent representative of the method of foreignization. However, very few people know that in China there is also a great theorist and translator, Lu Xun, who developed his own method of foreignization years earlier than Venuti. This article aims at carrying out a contrastive analysis of Lu Xun’s and Venuti’s translation theory. It will mainly focus on the method of foreignization, which will be also illustrated with examples of their translations. After a detailed comparison between the two authors, we can conclude that their views on foreignization present many similarities, but also some differences, due to their different historical and social contexts

In the first stages of learning to translate children’s literature, translation decisions can be conditioned by certain preconceived ideas such as the perceived free hand to manipulate a translation or the simplicity of the translation process. Something similar also occurs in the practice of translating children’s literature when it does not coincide with reflection on the characteristics, conditioning factors and restrictions of the translation. We argue in this paper that there is a need to reflect on the characteristics of translating children’s literature, and on the stereotypical notions that surround it, before embarking on the translation itself. The paper is based on an educational experience with Translation and Interpreting Degree students at the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón, as part of the Spanish-Catalan specialised translation course.

Medical translation is one of the most present - and least investigated – activities in the professional environment. The singularity of the field makes it necessary to create specific documentary resources appropriate for medical translators and writers. Thus, it is advisable to analyze the expectations that this professional community has with regard to the use of documentary sources. This article presents and discusses the results of a survey designed by the Gentt Research Group and administered to medical translators in Spain. Finally, several lines of research are proposed on the basis of such results

Resumen
The aim of this article is to study a translation feature frequently observed in translations for children and young people that can be called “translator paternalism”. Such a behaviour can be witnessed not only in literary translations but also in screen translations. With the description of several case studies the goal of this article is to prove the high frequency of paternalistic trends when translating for children and young people and to propose a typology which could be later improved in future approaches comprising larger corpora of translations.
