This article presents the results of an exploratory study which assesses the machine translation of audio descriptions as offering a possible solution to increase accessibility in multilingual environments. Accessibility is understood to encompass two different categories: sensorial accessibility (in this specific case, for the blind and visually impaired, who cannot access the visual content of audiovisual productions), and linguistic accessibility (for those who want to access this content in their own language). The article presents some thoughts on translation as a means of promoting multilingualism, on the feasibility of translating audio descriptions, and on machine translation as applied to this audiovisual translation mode, before summarising the findings of the present study and, most importantly, opening up new potential avenues for research.

Over the years the European Union has evolved from a predominantly political and socio-economic enterprise and become increasingly proactive in the area of justice, the so-called ‘Third Pillar’. The Maastricht Treaty (1993) introduced justice and home affairs as «matters of common interest» for the EU but it was the Amsterdam (1999) and Nice (2000) Treaties which really set out the ambition to shape the EU into «an area of freedom, security and justice». Following the Amsterdam Treaty (1999), the European Council laid down the priorities for Justice and Home Affairs in three subsequent five-year programmes (‘Tampere’, ‘The Hague’ and ‘Stockholm’). From the beginning the issue of access to and quality of interpreting (and translation) featured as one of the major fundamental rights and procedural safeguards to be ensured in criminal proceedings. The end of 2014 marks a turning point as the Stockholm Programme comes to an end. Therefore, it seems the time has come to take stock. This contribution surveys 15 years (1999-2014) of European and national legislation, of academic activity in training and research and of professionalization of the legal interpreting and translation community, charting important objectives that have been achieved.

This paper focuses on the right to court interpreting and police interpreting in Italy. The data presented about the situation in Italy are derived from the results of ImPLI (Improving Police and Legal Interpreting), a European research project funded by DG Justice which collected facts and figures about police interpreting in Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. The transposition of directive 2010/64/UE into Italian law is analysed to understand its impact on interpreting rights for people under investigation, accused persons and witnesses in Italy. The main drawbacks as well as improvements of the directive transposition are highlighted and discussed

In this article we focus on the English-Spanish combination and we examine the legal content of web pages translated into Spanish so as to pinpoint their conceptual, stylistic and terminological features. We are especially interested in studying the spread of new legal concepts and forms of writing, and in discussing the acceptability of translations that do not respect the genius of the target language and thus go beyond the hybridity or interference that characterises all translation (Toury, 1995; Monzó 2002, 2005; Borja, 2005). Thus, we examine the issue of how translations more oriented to the source text are received or interpreted within the target legal system. In order to illustrate this claim we present, as parallel texts, some examples of translations of digital documents into Catalan. Given that Catalan and Spanish share the same legal system and therefore the same conceptual base; differences of a linguistic nature in the translations provide an opportunity to determine whether fidelity to the source text is compatible with the duty of information to receivers. The aim of this paper is to show that translations of legal content on websites do not take into account the legal framework of the target culture, which in turn could lead to problems of interpretation, or at least comprehension, on the part of the final receiver

The goal of this article is to give an account of the characteristic features of the work of a conference interpreter at the Court of Justice of the European Union: a multilingual legal setting par excellence. The starting point is the institution’s regulatory framework, especially the provisions laying down language arrangements (from Regulation No 1 of 15 April 1958 to the various Rules of Procedure). The principle of multilingualism is enshrined therein and underpins the work of the three jurisdictions which make up the Court of Justice of the European Union: the Court of Justice, the General Court and the Civil Service Tribunal. The main features of the work of the interpreter in this specific context are then reviewed, with particular reference to ethical considerations, types of user, the role of mediation in an environment of «highly-shared context» and the case preparation phase, which is a key and distinguishing feature of interpreting at the Court of Justice

This article deals with the challenge posed in the translation into Spanish by the translator’s choice of a certain linguistic model that could cause misunderstandings or awkwardness in some Spanish-speaking areas. The challenge is twofold when the original makes a more or less extensive use of linguistic variation. In such cases “suspension of disbelief” – upon which the reader’s contract is based – calls for imaginative solutions on the part of the translator. Along with general reflections on translation, some examples from the Spanish translation of Xiaolu Guo’s A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers and Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full (two works that rely on an extensive use of distorted language) are offered in order to show how this kind of difficulty can be addressed in literary terms, avoiding the misleading paradigm of fidelity and equivalence. Some reactions to this approach by ordinary readers and professional reviewers are also offered.
