Public service interpreting and translation (PSIT) is a subfield of translation and interpreting. Still, it could stand independently due to the variety of subfields it encompasses and, thus, the job possibilities. Despite being considered an under-professionalised field in Spain, hundreds of graduates are interested and trained in PSIT, hoping to enhance their employment chances. However, this field relies on very few studies that focus specifically on employment, the skills that can make students employable or the graduates’ perspectives regarding the usefulness of the education and training received. This paper has three objectives: to explore the most useful skills for the PSIT labour market in Spain from the perspective of the graduates of a specific programme based on a selection of skills, to explore the potential relationship between internships and labour market insertion and to determine differences by language pairs. Results are obtained based on data gathered through a questionnaire sent to this specific training programme graduates. They show essential differences between the perception of the different language pairs in which the programme is taught, which could be correlated with other labour market needs and job opportunities. In turn, these differences also affect the usefulness of the skills that the students develop in the programme. Moreover, despite the variety of the subfields involved in the PSIT field, there is a specific relation between internships and certain jobs, especially for part of the Arabic, Chinese, French, and Russian groups graduates.

Humanistic currents have gradually burst into social science studies, such as ecolinguistics or ecocriticism, advocating an interdisciplinary perspective that embraces environmental doctrine and cognitive language and integrating ecology into translatological science. Although studies on the relationship between language and the environment are not recent, they have not received sociolinguistic attention that highlights the ecological crisis we are witnessing. Currently, concepts such as eco-translation or eco-transliteration have appeared somewhat timidly in the linguistic-environmental field, giving a plausible visibility to the translator in the symbiotic relationship between society-economy-environment. However, the relationship between the translator and nature lacks exhaustive studies, and translator training is hampered by the lack of a solid academic background that integrates the transdiscipline of the environment. For all these reasons, in this article, we intend to take a look at the most important considerations about eco-literacy in order to subsequently apply it in the translation classroom through four activities related to business and the environment, environmental programmes and conferences, journalistic translation and technical translation, and voluntary cooperation.

The objective of this study is to delve into the specificity offered by the translation into other languages of a work translated by the author from a first language into a second language. The most important problem is the choice of the source text, since one can choose between the original text, the self-translated text or both at the same time. On this occasion, we address the specific obstacle represented by the fact that the author has retranslated the work from the second language into the first language by means of a back-self-translation. As an illustrative example, we analyze the novel A sombra cazadora, by the Galician narrator Suso de Toro, written in Galician, later translated into Spanish and finally rendered from Spanish into Galician.

This article will analyse some of the key developments and challenges in recent translation research. Beginning with an overview of the state of the art and the main debates that prevailed in the field of translation studies at the turn of the century, three main trends will be identified as common denominators of research on translation in the first two decades of the 21st century: a clear commitment to interdisciplinary research which proactively aims at influencing other fields of knowledge and society in general; an understanding of translation as a ubiquitous, multifaceted and chameleon-like phenomenon pervading the societies of the digital and globalised era, and a call to adopt new non-binary theoretical and methodological frameworks in order to shed light on the complex and vast heterogeneity of translation practices which take place at multiple intersections among the inherently plural languages, cultures and identities coexisting in the superdiverse societies of our day and age.

This paper is a contribution to the history of the creation of an “Arabic-Hispanic Library” in Modern Spain, between the 17th and the 18th centuries. In order to do this, I focus on the analysis of the foundational contribution of Nicolás Antonio in his Bibliotheca vetus hispana. The figure of the scholar from Seville is essential in the intellectual history of Spanish Enlightenment, and in this paper a first contribution is done to the study of how he created the list of Arabic authors that he included in his Bibliotheca. In this sense, the sources include classic works of Spanish historiography, and many books of European Orientalist scholars that, as I try to show, play an essential role not only in terms of Spanish critical thinking. This influence extends to works such as Andrés González de Barcia’s reedition of Epítome by León Pinelo, or even to Miguel Casiri and his circle, which includes such a prominent figure as Pedro Rodríguez.

The second half of the 20th century marks the beginning of translatological theories. Most of the approaches that emerged in this period (apart from juritraductology) are conceived from a general point of view. Thus, the aim of this study is to offer a historical overview of the different translatological approaches to relate them to legal translation. More specifically, we focus on the theories that concentrate on the importance of cultural factors in legal translation. We therefore move from the most general, such as the linguistic approach, to more specific studies in our field, such as juritraductology.

This exploratory study tries to expand the available information about video game transcreation, combining data from the process, the product, and the reception. First, it investigates how familiar video game developers are with the concept of transcreation through a probabilistic sampling with a survey. Next, two games in which the translator was allowed more creative liberty are analysed to check if this fact results in greater deviations from the literal meaning of the source text. Finally, a reception survey of 569 players asks their opinion on cultural adaptation in video games. The results show that most developers are not familiar with the concept of transcreation, but they allow the translator to deviate from the original to some extent. The players are divided on their opinion regarding the importance of cultural adaptation and the translation of proper nouns in video games.

This article reviews, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the creation of the journal Trans: Revista de Traductología published by the Department of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Malaga, the professional situation of translators working for publishing houses in Spain around 1997. It briefly recalls the computer and lexicographic tools used at that time, as well as the employment conditions (contracts, rates), the legal framewok (Intellectual Property Law), and the associative situation of the translator’s collective (with specific mention of the main Spanish translators’ association, ACE Traductores). It also refers to some of the changes that have taken place since then.
