Resumen
A total of 82 systematic publications were analyzed between 1981-2013, for the Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve (ReBAMB), which is part of the Central Volcanic Cordillera Conservation Area (ACCVC). This Wild Protected Area is located in San Ramón, Alajuela, and Montes de Oro, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The study compiles 169 new records of which 98 refer to new species. The analysis includes taxonomic data publications by kingdom, order, family, genus and species. In addition, bibliographical data of the language, country of origin of the journal and frequency of publications were examined.

Resumen
Through the application of the geographic information systems (GIS), the topographic profiles and slope-accessibility maps of seven paths at Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve were created. The base input were the line trails and the sheet level curves obtained by using San Lorenzo (10m), this data was used to elaborate a Digital elevation model (MED), used for the later design of the profiles and the slope maps. The obtained results are more than a mere physical description of the trails, they englobe a source of information for the management of protected areas, since they provide valuable information about sections with higher degradation probability for both researchers and those who are in charge of trail section

Resumen
This is a review of the level of implementation, during the period 2009-2014, of the actions proposed in the Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve (ReBAMB) General Plan of Management, among the institutions that share the management of this protected area, the Universidad de Costa Rica –Sede de Occidente and the Sistema Nacional de Conservación - Area de Conservación Cordillera Volcánica Central. The objective was toevaluate the impact of the implementation of the actions envisaged in the ReBAMB´s general management plan as a way to guide biological conservation actions.

Resumen
The investigative work consisted in the analytical investigation of a photometric proposal for the determination of calcium in five different parenteral solutions, in a laboratory (A) in the field of health in Costa Rica. First, the concentration of calcium present in the five parenteral solutions was determined by a volumetric method with EDTA in Laboratory A, the results of which were taken as reference since the method was validated by a body accredited for this purpose. Subsequently, the photometric method recommended by the photometer supplier was tested in the same Laboratory A, presenting problems of precision and accuracy; So we went to the tests in a laboratory B with an identical instrument, which did not give precision problems. The results from both laboratories were statistically compared with a t-Student test and it was stated that there is enough statistical evidence to say that the difference between the results of both laboratories is significant. However, irreversible interferences were maintained photometrically in the study matrices, determining that sodium causes an interference that generates greater intensity in the emission, producing a positive error in the expected calcium concentration. Finally, the suitability of the methodology to quantify calcium by flame photometry in another free sodium matrix was confirmed, obtaining satisfactory results for the calcium content.

Resumen
The doctoral research Healing Knowledge and Practices of Peasant Healers: An Approach to Traditional Medicine in Northern Antioquia, Colombia emphasizes the study of several practices and skills from traditional medicine. These practices are understood as historical and cultural elaborations influenced by matters of a symbolic nature. As a result, a comprehensive view of the events and experiences that make a peasant become a healer, and the recognition of the influence of symbolism on the processes of tending to health and illness, becomes significant. During field work, several life sustaining practices have been recognised. In addition, we glimpse distinct initiation pathways followed by eight healers, in the municipalities of San Pedro de los Milagros, Don Matías, Belmira, Santa Rosa de Osos y San José de la Montaña. The methodological component of the research was developed via the reconstruction of life histories through story telling, factual narratives, in-depth interviews and participants’ observations. As a result, we acknowledge that the formation of the healer is not given in a extemporaneous manner, but rather it has to do with a multiplicity of processes and situations of a personal and cultural nature

Resumen
The “cimarronas” emerged in Costa Rica from the military bands and the municipal philharmonics on the second half of the XIX century. They were groups of no more than eight members that gladdened local festivities or popular fairs. Since then, they wander along the streets together with local masquerades with a traditional repertoire of pasodobles and parranderas, among others. Towards the end of the XX century, this musical ensembles were less common and were formed predominantly by elderly people; however, from 2004 to the date of this research study they reemerge strongly hand- in- hand with young musicians. The “Cimarrona” has been little studied, that is why this article is based on oral history: observations within the cultural space, interviews to former and present-day members of cimarronas, audience reactions, and a collection of videos, photographs and audio recordings. To contextualize this study, academic publication about the arrivaland development of similar cultural expressions to our continent such as carnivals and their dance groups, popular religious festivities and traditional parades, has been examined. This paperwork, after having analyzed the existent information, oral and written, establishes how a new cultural character comes to life taking ownership of the cimarronas tradition. This refers to young musicians who

Resumen
Yield and quality of five parthenocarpic American type cucumber genotypes (Cucumis sativus L.) grown under greenhouse conditions were evaluated during the dry season in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The harvest begun at 31 days after transplant for all genotypes. Data show a wide variability between genotypes with respect to fruit length (21,10 – 23,85 cm), fruit diameter (48,57 – 49,97 mm), total number of fruits per plant (21,63 – 24,31), mean fruit weight (304,51 – 378,51 g), yield per plant (6748,11 – 8540,18 g/plant), commercial yield (15,12 – 19,04 kg/m2), total yield (17,53 – 22,18 kg/m2), and percentage of total soluble solids (3,40 – 3,89 °Brix). Modan genotype obtained the lowest first quality yield. Primavera and Corinto genotypes obtained the highest commercial yield (19,04 and 18,27 kg/m2, respectively).
