The experience of foreignness was a constituent part of Zygmunt Bauman’s life, deeply inscribed in the crossroads, disasters, and shocks of the 20th century. Self-defined as a “stranger from head to toe and to the marrow,” his personal experience as a foreigner -defined less by the passport than by the precarious status and lack of belonging of every stranger- was interwoven with an exile intellectual view on the social world, in which uncertainty was combined with freedom of thought. Thus, from a position that assumes foreignness as a “being on the edge,” “out from,” this condition became for Bauman in a privileged epistemological viewpoint.

Zygmunt Bauman's work has emerged as a significant contribution to critical thinking aimed at redefining and expanding the margins of disciplinary reflection, to incorporate trends and events that have exposed the limits of the complex process of construction of Modernity. Among the topics brought to the field of sociological inquiry, an important place has been occupied by the Holocaust. The article argues that the analysis of the event is subsumed in the conceptualization of Modernity, as articulated by the Enlightenment, disregards the theoretical and practical struggles to define it and its impact on the Jewish condition, and extends its analysis to the conceptualization of the victims, their specificity, the approach to memory and the implications of the links between morality and political criticism.

This article aims to analyse the Spanish political party Podemos based on its origin, its classification within party models, the ideological perspective and political project of the party, and its communication strategy. The author’s assumption is that there are two contradictions within the party: one between the ideological proposal and the intention to come to power through the conventional paths established by the Spanish legislation, and the second, between the formal party structure headed by a small decision-making elite, and a message in which the party declares itself an instrument of political change supported by leading groups of civil society. The final comments include notes on the electoral performance of the party.

For Zygmunt Bauman the phenomenon of “wasted lives” is only a product of the project of modernity, of which this author was one of the greatest critics. While the discourse of modernity has varied, in Bauman’s view the fragmented and therefore precarious concept of “modernity” must then be reconstructed. The sharpening of the contradictions of the discourse of modernity is based on dramatic phenomena such as those of the displaced, the refugees, the miserable, and so on; that is, what Bauman called “human waste.”

In this paper, we analyze the impact of salary overlap between middle management and unionized workers that has been occurring in Argentina in recent years. We consider the reluctance of managers to organize as to protect their interests. This leads us to explore the relationship between Peronism and the middle classes. This article is the product of reflections based on an ongoing research of middle management in big Argentinean companies from various sectors of the economy and with capitals from different countries. The methodological approach is qualitative and is based on in depth semi-structured interviews.

This article explores a sustainable concept of energy security based on the wellbeing of the Mexican society that is able to fulfill the ndc committed to unfccc in 2015 and ratified in September 2016 by the Senate. It first analyzes the concept of energy security in the international context and then for Mexico examines globally the evolution of hydrocarbon extraction, conflicts, geopolitical pressures on oil prices, and the impact on public finances in Mexico and its oil company Pemex. The political-military approach of energy security reviews the increase of illegal actors involved in the robbery of fossil fuels. The article shows that energy security is not only a military-political issue, where powerful pressures of global actors affect oil prices by manipulating supply and demand. On the contrary, the text proposes that the current crisis in oil prices opens for Mexico the possibility to promote its abundant renewable energy potential (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, and biomass) existing in the whole territory. Beside transnational foreign investment, stimulated by the present energy reform, there exist in Mexico also citizens savings to strengthen a renewable energy transition. Further, the restructuring of Pemex towards an efficient enterprise would stimulate public investments. Therefore, a holistic concept of energy security integrates human, environmental, economic, gender and societal security. This may open for Mexico the possibility of a long-term energy policy, based on sustainability, equity, and collective citizen’s welfare.
