The aim of this study is to undertake a comparative analysis of the development and expansion of the jurisdictional lordship in the Iberian Peninsula between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. This process will be examined in the case of Catalonia, within the Crown of Aragon, and in Castile. More precisely, we will examine the confrontation and convergence that took place between the monarchical powers and the aristocracy of each territory with regard to the expansion and exercise of seigneurial rights associated with jurisdictional power, namely justice and taxation. Despite the different dynamics at work in Catalonia and Castile, certain converging trends are noteworthy. Thus, the ultimate generalisation of jurisdictional lordship in both territories contributed to a fragile balance of power between the reaffirmation of royal authority and the strengthening of the territorial power of the seigneurial aristocracy.

Travels undertaken by Castilian ecclesiastics were similar in character to those of their counterparts in other European kingdoms following the evolution in time of the development of the institutional Church and of royal policy, with the exception of those that took place in specific areas such as the borderlands with Islam. Hence, while at the onset of the medieval period, monks were the central figures in this movement, in the later Middle Ages the standard was set primarily by the secular clergy and especially by bishops. This study offers a wide typological spectrum that includes travels that were part of an ecclesiastic’s ministry, to those whose purpose was diplomacy, learning, pilgrimages, and even some that were undertaken merely for leisure.

This article aims to study military expenditure in the Middle Ages and the constraints that fashioned its structure and implementation. Using the War of the Two Pedros as a specific case study, and restricting it to a particular scenario, the kingdom of Valencia in the mid-fourteenth century, this study analyses all the items that constituted spending on war, offering estimates and analysing its structure to determine the consequences of its main limitation: its control by the nobility.

The kingdom of Toledo was a part of Castile since the eleventh century. It was a border territory with Islam during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The Castilian monarchy installed military orders to defend the kingdom of Toledo from the Muslims. The international Order of Saint John or Order of the Hospital was one of these. Since the twelfth century, this order had a province or priory in Castile. Castilian monarchs and nobles donated many properties to the Hospitallers in the kingdom of Toledo. In fact, the order obtained in this kingdom its greatest lordship in the Crown of Castile. Consequently, the Hospitallers installed many commanderies or bailiwicks in the kingdom of Toledo. There were twenty-one commanderies of the Order of Saint John here during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

This study focusses on a letter sent by a Castilian ambassador assigned to the Third Council of Paris, unknown until now in Castilian scholarship, which is here edited and analysed. It is a rare, extant example of a letter from an ambassador to his monarch, making it particularly relevant for the news it conveys. Through this letter, it is possible to study the context, participation and position of Castile in the meeting of the French clergy, as well as with respect to the Schism. This allows us to undo some errors that have been perpetuated until now with respect to the figure of the ambassador and his role at the Council, in addition to identifying him as Fernando de Illescas.

The purpose of this study is to show that Marsilius of Padua must not be considered part of the conciliarist current, unless conciliarism is understood in such a broad manner that it ends up distorting its genuine meaning. To support this claim, the author’s ecclesiastical doctrine is analysed, one which is mainly developed in the Defensor pacis, his most famous and relevant work. Our main purpose is to argue that Marsilius of Padua does in no way grant the council the supreme power of the Church –that which most characterizes conciliarism. In fact, we contend he holds an exceedingly ambiguous position with respect to the conciliar assembly, to the extent to which he often considers it dispensable and confers on it more of a symbolic role than a real one.

he study seeks to unveil the conflict that underlay the process of emancipation of suffragan churches from their parent churches. It is specifically based on the data related to the process that takes place in the Lordship of Biscay at the end of the Middle Ages. It focusses on a case study, the gruelling and protracted conflict between the main church of Santa María in Lekeitio and its suffragan churches from the nearby anteinglesias (church porticoes) in Ispaster, Gizaburuaga, Amoroto and Mendexa. The lawsuit is also an example of the clergy’s mentality and methods of action, of the workings of ecclesiastical justice and the relations between the Church and civil institutions, both the lordship and the crown at that time.

The aim of this study is to increase our understanding of the main labour activities carried out by women in the city of Lleida in the late Middle Ages, through the records generated by the criminal tribunal of Coltellades. A detailed analysis of the Llibres de Crims, found in the Municipal Archives of Lleida, allows us to assess the important role that women played within the population of Lleida as a whole, in the development of its economy, be it in rural or urban sectors, as independent actors or actively collaborating within the family group.

The natural landscape that surrounds the estuaries of Avilés and Aboño has undergone important changes during the last seventy years. This has directly influenced significant transformations in the landscape of the municipalities of Gozón and Carreño. This article tries to deepen and explain the causes that conditioned this degradation as a result of the implantation of large industrial complexes in its surrounding. The main conclusion is that these modifications in the landscape are clearly related to the prevailing socioeconomic structure at the time, which, added to the lack of restrictive legislation that regulated and protected the natural environment, resulted in the transformation of these important natural spaces.

Every city is subjected, to a greater or lesser degree, to a constant process of renewal which affects its urban fabric and responds to the particularities of each historical period. It is a renewal generating changes that leave their mark on urban morphology and that are especially sensitive in the founding neighborhoods of every urban fact that personalize the historic centers. We are witnessing since the end of the last century a destruction of the social and economic concept of neighborhood for the sake of an artificiality, a musealization caused by the important process of touristification in this "sacred part of the city" in which rests the essence of the differentiation of each urban core. But the actions in such significant spaces are a continuous source of conflict, whether from the private or the public sphere. To the excessive protection in which different urban planning figures overlap and that retracts private initiative are added the controversies between local governments and certain sectors of the population when acting on the public domain.
