Departing from a number of theses about the meaning of logical negation, the present work offers a reflection about the relationship between logical pluralism and the status of some fundamental logical principles. The aim is to show that the Adoption Problem, such as it has been formulated by Kripke/Padró, does not represent a challenge for the anti-exceptionalism about logic. Logical laws don’t have a special status, even if there exist some laws that can’t be adopted, because we are able to abandon some of them and it is dropping rules, and not adopting them the way in which the logic is revised. Therefore, we can accept a kind of logical pluralism that gives us more than one set of principles that captures correctly the meaning of negation.

The goal of the study was to estimate the average monthly runoff from a basin for the development of a pico hydropower in a rural-mountainous area of the jungle (Satipo) on Peru. Due to the lack of hydrometeorological data in hilly and remote basins in Peru, a hydrological estimate is essential to determine the hydroenergy potential in the study basin. First, the geomorphological parameters (shape and relief parameters) of the basin were determined and, subsequently, a precipitation analysis was made considering the data from 17 meteorological stations. To verify the homogeneity of the rainfall records, a consistency analysis was carried out using a double accumulation analysis. To estimate the flows of the study basin, in the absence of hydrometric information, the flow transposition method was used, in which the flows of the Ourohuari basin were transported. Likewise, it was verified that the geomorphological and hydrometeorological characteristics are similar, for this, a t-test was carried out for independent samples to verify the similarity in the annual precipitation between both basins. Finally, it can be concluded that the geomorphological characteristics and flow regular throughout the year in the Cashingari basin are favoring the development of a pico hydropower.

The present article analyzes the indexation and data retrieval tool called Descriptors in Health Sciences (Descritores em Ciências da Saúde, DeCS, in the Portuguese acronym) as an ideological-discursive object, through the perspective of the Franco-Brazilian discourse analysis. The research was performed between 2014 and 2015. In order to do so, we considered the historical conditions in which the Descriptors in Health Sciences were created, and we compared between a particular aspect of education and the meanings of some of the entries related to the field labor, education and health. Lastly, we sought to contribute to the field of library ccience with considerations about discourse and ideology in reading, selection and development of documentary languages.

This paper intends to contribute to research on the simplification hypothesis by incorporating a multi-discourse analysis. The study compares non-specialized and academic specialized discourse with the aim of describing their similarities and difference in terms of syntactic and stylistic simplification. Considering two variables (non-specialized/specialized discourse and original/translated texts) allows for examination of which has a greater influence on the tendency towards simplification. According to the adopted corpus-based methodology, four corpora are compiled, including original and translated English texts representing non-specialized and academic discourse. Then, simplification-related features (lexical variety, lexical density, mean sentence length, use of subordination and non-finite sentences) are determined and identified in each corpus. The comparison of the results across different corpora shows signs of simplification in both types of discourse. However, each presents different linguistic features, suggesting that simplification is more related to the type of discourse than to the original or translated nature of the analyzed texts.

In this paper, we present results from a corpus study that consists of Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDHoH) in English and Spanish TV-Series. Streaming series have begun to take over the audiovisual market. In this regard, we consider essential the need of create a set of rules of this new modality of accessible translation. The main objective of this work is to carry out a general statistical analysis of the articulated and non-articulated sounds that professional subtitlers select, both in English and Spanish, to translate in their subtitles. Thus, we also aim to identify whether there are similarities and/or differences between these two languages in the practice of subtitling. The methodology of this work is based on a corpus study composed of four episodes of an English-language series and four episodes of two Spanish-language series. In addition, we also aim to identify whether there are similarities and/or differences between these two languages in the translation practice of subtitling. Finally, this analysis will provide us with reliable data that will help us to detect the translation techniques most used in English and Spanish in SDHoH.

This study is designed to evaluate the two academic translation training master’s programs at two local public universities in Palestine in view of burgeoning market demands. The study reveals the weaknesses and strengths in both training programs, a step which is believed to be necessary to evaluate trainers’ current practices and provide formative data about these programs and programs operating in similar contexts. To achieve this objective, the modules of the courses, the teaching and assessment methods and the challenges facing implementing and developing the curricula are all studied, bearing in mind the job market. Two questionnaires were also administered to students and translation professionals. The questionnaires address the current market demands for translator training, the performance level of novice translators, the nature of the courses and the challenges that are likely to face developing and implementing the curricula, and the methods of teaching and assessment. The study findings reveal that there are significant shortcomings in the curricula, namely the theoretical training is overemphasized and stakeholders’ involvement in the review and design of the translation program curricula remains significantly undervalued. Finally, the study identifies the emerging translation text genres that occupy a significant niche in the local translation market.

Translated literature and the surrounding paratexts contribute to the formation and reinforcement of cultural images. Several editions of the novel Confessions of a mask by Yukio Mishima have been published in Spain. This paper analyses the paratexts in order to explore how they present the Japanese Other. For this case study we chose an outstanding author, which ensures a higher degree of visibility in the reception society, and this novel because several editions have been published throughout forty years. Cultural and Translation Studies methodologies were combined to analyse visual and textual paratexts. Results show that some of the paratexts present the Other in exoticizing ways, especially the paratexts by the publisher. Meanwhile, time variable does not seem relevant, since exotization has not followed a decreasing pattern.

The growing demand for professional translators and interpreters in China has led to an increasing number of universities offering a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting (BTI). In order to find out whether the training offered responds to the market needs, an exploratory study has been conducted through which the different aspects of the curricula have been analysed and compared. Information has been collected from 28 Chinese public universities representative of each of the country’s regions. The main results show that the training does not meet the needs of the market, as it focuses on language learning and other fields of knowledge, and that specific training in Translation and Interpreting is insufficient, especially in the field of interpreting.
