Resumen
This article focuses on the use and meaning that Francisco Zarco assigned to some of the key concepts of his political thought during the last two years of his life. For this, the articles published during this period in El Siglo Diez y Nueve were analyzed, paying special attention to the historical circumstances in which they were written. The objective is to delve into the richness and complexity of the political thought of the intellectual from Durango, in order to understand his contributions, not only to the prevailing liberalism of the time, but also to other ideological corpus, such as democracy and republicanism.

Resumen
This article examines the presence of the Mexican writer Alfonso Reyes in Argentine cultural magazines during his diplomatic stay in this country (1927- 1930 and 1936-1938). The analysis of the discursive and iconographic representations allows for the unraveling of the meanings associated with his diplomatic mission and the consideration of the transfers between public opinion and circles of intellectual sociability. It is argued that on most occasions the interpretations accentuated his double representation as a diplomatic writer. To this end, we sought to elucidate the connotations in the Argentine cultural and political field.

Resumen
José Elguero Videgaray, from Michoacán, was one of the most renowned Mexican writers, journalists, and Hispanists of the first half of the 20th century. A fervent Catholic and lover of History, Elguero was a great admirer of New Spain’s colonial past to the extent that few like him devoted themselves to the defense of the Spanish heritage in Mexico, as well as to the recognition of its strategic value for the revitalization of Mexican national identity, particularly in the face of the powerful influence of the United States or the emergence of new ideologies such as Soviet communism. The article studies the trajectory and work of this journalist from Michoacán and analyzes the arguments that led him to defend the Spanish heritage in Mexico against the Hispanophobia of those he would call the “false apostles”.

Resumen
This essay is part of a broader investigation about the discussion around the concepts of civilization and barbarism in Latin America. We trace back to the role in the configuration of this discursive played by Hernán Cortés, who was projected as a «civilizing hero» for contributing to the spread of Christianity in the New World, as well as for his role as ruler, settler, urban planner and architect of the new colonial order. As a balance, a proposal is offered, inspired by Walter Benjamín, around the conception of Cortés as a «civilizer» that aims to challenge the Manichaeism from which he is usually conceptualized.
