Grounded in the resource-based view of the firm, this study addresses and describes to what extent managers might choose to deploy and pursue knowledge management in their organization by outsourcing, because they recognize the difficulties to fulfill this activity relying solely on their own resources. This article looks at the literature on knowledge management and outsourcing, seeking to highlight the intersection between the subjects, as well as proposing a conceptual research model that summarizes the rationale adopted. The conceptual model undergoes a specific empirical validation and the results are analyzed using peer-to-peer comparisons of the deterministic decision method with multiple attributes and content analysis. Among the findings, it was observed the homogeneity of respondents regarding the willingness of outsourced knowledge management to take risks, which is constrained in the organization by fear over loss of abilities and skills, as well as inadequacy of the provider to keep up to date. From a theoretical viewpoint, it was observed in the relationship between knowledge management and outsourcing, an extrapolation of consolidated concepts, something that may generate provocation with regard to the assumption that outsourcing is appropriate only for areas or functions that can be sufficiently scripted, described, and shared within a predefined scope (usually described as non-core areas). As a contribution to practice, it was possible managers recognize the subject “knowledge management” as a process that demands ‘management’ and should been introduced in their practices. Also observed was the possibility to devise and provide knowledge management outsourcing services, having the conceptual model proposed here as a basis.

The study aims to investigate the content of corporate stories of the Brazilian’s football clubs and how these stories are used to build their corporate brands. The stories were collected from the corporate websites of football clubs in Brazil belonging to series A, B and C. A qualitative analysis of the corporate stories was carried on by means of content analysis of the corpus resulting from them. The results showed that emotion is a key element and is most strongly represented in the websites. The findings also revealed that although the clubs work with human talent, and positive results of the teams in the pitch are dependent on talent, this important aspect is practically forgotten on the websites. Academic and managerial implications, as well as limitations of the study are presented at the end.

The main goal of this research is to explore, discuss and map the challenges of embodiment to research methodology. Consequently, the paper follows the qualitative tradition, focusing on the activities of interpretation, exploration and description. Two sources of information are highlighted: documents (embodiment researches published as thesis, dissertation, article, book and book chapters) and interviews with scholars specialized in embodiment. The result of this research is materialized in the formulation, description and discussion of nine challenges, issued from embodiment in the context of the research methodology. These challenges are organized from three key moments in the methodological process: (a) research planning, (b) interaction with empirical material and (c) analysis of empirical material. Furthermore, ethnography appears to be the methodological approach used by scholars.

A critical body of literature has emerged focusing on the spectrum of resistance against impositions engendered by the modus operandum of western capitalism, including the nuances of the productive patterns considering the environment as a device attached to the triple bottom line of the traditional view of sustainable development. Regarding the theory, solidarity economy (economic pillar), social movements (social pillar), political ecology (environmental pillar), and cultural roots (cultural pillar) are important apparatus that cannot be left behind if an alternative concept of sustainable development is to be structured. This article considers such apparatus as having elements of resistance, since they have different characteristics when compared to the standard features of the pillars that form the base of the criticized conception of sustainable development. Therefore, the main goal of this article is to conceive alternative elements to the standard concept of sustainable development, considering aspects of the grassroots approach. This study is relevant as it offers alternative and complementary elements in order to provide an understanding of the updated conjectures. The prospects of grassroots development, involving less developed communities worldwide, are being used as practical guidelines in local development actions. They have rarely been conjectured as conceptual elements to offer a new format for the conception of sustainable development. This article concludes that the traditional version of sustainable development can be upgraded with the alternative elements emerging from the grassroots approach.

The main purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of human resource management processes in animation studios, which are part of the creative industry. This study adopted Chaston’s (2008) definition of creative industry as the meeting of business and culture. Chaston – among other authors – perceived the dilemma between artistic fulfilment and commercial objectives as central to this industry. But, in what ways does this dilemma translate into the operation of human resource management in Brazilian studios? In order to answer this question a qualitative research was conducted through case studies of four Brazilian animation content production companies. Data was collected through interviewing a business partner and an employee of each one of the companies. The data collected points out that human resource management tools are still rare in these work places, although managers are conscious that employees are their main business resource. In addition, it was observed that the retention of employees in these companies is related to their identification with the activity itself rather than for gratifications, such as salary or other benefits.

Co-production has been pointed out as the main topic in public administration over the last decade, due to the fact that the delivery of many public services depends on the active participation of users. This approach however is still not used to its full potential because of the fragmentation and lack of systematization of the concepts presented in the literature on co-production. This study aims to contribute in this sense, identifying and discussing the elements that might form a more robust and integrated conceptual framework, supporting the research and practice on co-production in public policy. The literature review is based on the classic research produced on the subject, which has set the guidelines for the literature on co-production over the last 40 years. By systematizing and discussing the relevant concepts, this study intends to identify the relationships existing among them, as well as the potential for new interrelationships. Thus the main contribution of this article is to identify the concepts of co-production that are found in theoretical framework and point out the relationships among them. The discussion provided suggests a broad and rich agenda for future research on co-production.

This article explores the international and national literature on creative spaces, highlighting the theoretical inputs of Milton Santos about the concept of territory, as well as other contributions he has bought to the subject. The article establishes a concept of creative territory that incorporates a critical and reflective perspective of analysis for studies in this theoretical field. In addition, it promotes an approach of development that includes aspects of economic, social and symbolic formation in a specific space. The discussions presented in this article have the potential to assist the planning of public policies for the development of creative territories that include social inclusion, sustainability, innovation and cultural diversity.

This article is the result of a reflection on the scientific development of the management. It proposes to analyze the theoretical path of the field, from their frameworks, reflecting on the epistemological problem of a knowledge that even haven’t clearly defined its object of study. Inspired in the concept of the circle of epistemic matrices, conceived by Paes de Paula (2015), the analysis is based on three theoretical matrices (Orthodox Studies, Organizational Studies and Critical Studies), verifying their trajectories and highlighting the need to reposition their scientific object. Finally, some considerations are made in order to instigate the researchers of this area to make more profound reflections on the epistemological bases of this science.

This article explores the debate in the public arena of electoral corruption in Brazil, from a pragmatic sociology perspective, to map and unfold its main disputes. Through the approach of the Actor-Network Theory (LATOUR, 2007; 2012; 2014), we seek to grasp how the public arena of electoral corruption (re)sets over time and how this public issue is seen, interpreted, and which solutions multiple actors propose. Therefore, we provide a “ballistic” view, i.e. the nonlinear route of a public issue addressed over time (CHATEAURAYNAUD, 2011). This study is based on the methodological approach of the “cartography of disputes” (VENTURINI, 2010; 2012 and VENTURINI, RICCI, MAURI et al., 2015). In addition, we analyze the public arena in three fields: political (through newspaper articles published in Folha de São Paulo), scientific (by searching academic databases), and technical-legal (examining the most significant laws on the subject). The timeframe of the mapping was from 1988, the milestone of the Brazilian democratic opening, and goes until 2014. This allowed identifying the main actors-network, who are spokespersons for the public issue, their statements, the themes of disputes arising in the debate, and the worldviews built over time about the public issue. Thus, we illustrate the setting process (CEFAÏ, 1996) or, the translation process (LATOUR, 2012) that the public issue has gone through, which influences its definition and the ways in which it is interpreted and faced.

This article analyzes the epistemological fundamentals of power in classical-rationalistic management, describing them as approaches based on its main authors: Barnard, Simon, Drucker, Crozier and Mintzberg. It also highlights the rationality and the values that support this management, especially, taking into account that reflections about power related to organizational objectives have been little elaborated by the North American management theorists. The article presents a theoretical review of the philosophical doctrine whose principal scholar is Vilfredo Pareto. Analysis of instrumental rationality as an epistemological basis for strategic management shows how the interactions between the human and non-human are established through the presence of art and science, including in its later stage social cybernetics in terms of social oscillation and organizational balance/imbalance. In this way, managerial narrative assumes human rationality forms and builds systems of transversal knowledge in a technical instrumental logic. More than questioning the acute asymmetries of organizational power, management has been focused on guiding and training managers, enterprises and organizations by using technologies of domination, under emblems of functional authority supported by communicational devices, and more recently, in inter and trans-organizational networks. Therein lies its strength and legitimacy, more than the foundation of an explicit political frame.
