Analysis of the loving behaviour of Guy de Maupassant’s novel Fort comme la mort in which this behaviour becomes a powerful fixed idea. If in the case of Maupassant young love makes sometimes a splendid beginning when aging it rushes the lover into the most terrible despair. It is a disease, a delusion, a destructive passion, a hallucination, it does not save, it does not seek any joy.

Contemporary literary history, linked to the totalitarian experience of the countries of Eastern Europe, presents itself as a rich framework opening up to the analysis of the behavior of individuals subject to the requirements of the system. Based on a corpus of two novels written by Katrina Kalda (1980), an exiled writer from East-ern Europe, we will present some (feminine) trajectories illustrating the conse-quences of an organization that destroys individuals in favor of the notion of State. Introversion, silence, paralysis, mental alienation and ultimately suicide and exile become the most representative manifestations of a gallery of characters who act on the borderline of unbelievable and insubordinate. The novel, according to Milan Kundera (1986, 2006), offers us the best way of expressing an existential problem-atic, the loss and degradation of values. The author and her oppressed characters denounce the abuses of a destructive social organization over several decades.

In the framework of the literary representation of drugs, their raison d’être, their effects, and their consequences, this study will mainly address key texts by Baudelaire and Gautier, two of the boldest explorers of ivresse in the nineteenth century who were both participants in the Club des hachichins under the tutelage of Dr. Moreau. The condition of possibility of their liminal experiences is the taking of drugs that allows them to get lost, voluntarily, in a space beyond the landmarks of conventional thought on the moving, and often untenable, threshold between reason and madness.

In the analysis of the Chevalier des Touches (1864) by Jules Amédée Barbey d’Aurevilly, one can see characters disconcerted after the French Revolution. Prisoners in a remote past that prevents them from advancing, inexorably condemned to remain in a nonexistent space and forced to understand the time they have to live, are subjected to both physical and mental deterioration. By counteracting the present life, the characters will be marked by a tenacious and unconscious will of degeneration materialized by various pathologies.

Born in 1916 in Berlin, Unica Zürn committed suicide in Paris in 1970. During the last twenty years of her life, this artist, painter, and sentimental companion of Hans Bellmer, fought against schizophrenia. She spent many periods in psychiatric hospitals and has described her mental illness, her remissions from this illness and the psychiatric universe in El Hombre-Jazmín. This is an unusual autobiography, narrated in third person and in the present historic, and represents a direct and perturbed testimony of a lucid nature about her experiences. The book includes anagrams that she developed over a long period of time.

In this article, we study the concept of “folie”to show how it was used by Franquin in his bandes dessinées [comics] as a critical tool. From the adventures of the hero Spirou and his fanciful friend, Fantasio, published by a catholic publisher between the 1930s and 1950s in a magazine aimed at the family, to Gaston, the burlesque antihero who, in his own way, protests against the system of production which became hyper-controlling and rigid in the Dupuis family business in the 60s-70s, this critique lead to the “anarchist” gags of the magazine sup-plement Trombone illustré (quickly rejected by its publisher) and the dark humour of Idées noires in the 70s. Both of these two express the mortiferous madness of human beings and the Fran-quin’s nervous breakdowns.

The end of the twentieth century has been marked by the failure of a critical reasoning ushered in by Enlightenment. The condemning of all ideologies has given way to widespread and generalized cynicism within a society imbued with deception. We shall first of all analyze what has caused this twilight of Modernity to later on evidence that the progressive depersonalization and un-reality, inscribed with poetry of Danielle Collobert, are the reflection of a schizoid society. As a buffer against this cynical power, Sophie Podolski adopts the insolent laugh of the fool appropriated from a Kunica tradition initiated by Diogenes and which extends to Thyl Ulenspiegel.

Emmanuelle Bayamack-Tam’s novels, populated by marginal characters with multi-ple psychopathologies, constitute a privileged object of the reflection on the inscrip-tion of madness in literature. In the footsteps of Foucault, the writer problematizes the social and discursive production of madness ; in her texts, she unfolds a dis-course not only on, but also of madness or rather of (polyphonic, plural) madnesses, staging an excessive and transgressive, lunatic and lyric speech that oscillates be-tween silence and song. This analysis focuses on the novel Hymen (2003), mosaic of several « mad » discourses. Yet, Bayamack-Tam’s œuvre forming a complex transfictional network, it also retraces, from one text to another, the trajectories of her protagonists, lost in more than one way, carriers of (and carried by) wandering discourses that defy novelistic chronology and the logic of identity, as well as rea-son as « the madness of the strongest » (Ionesco).

It will analyze the phenomenon of illegal immigration as an irrational fact. Despite the calls and the dangers facing this phenomenon, it seems to settle down in duration and in contempt even of human life. The Mediterranean becomes a necropolis. Faced with the insensitivity of European policies, the migratory surge in its enthusiasm and intangible will raises the question of mental stability. It does not take much to turn humans into beasts. Maybe just take the bread off. From the analysis of the transgression of the taboo of the sacredness of life, we will show the unfulfilled of the suicidal migrant. We will demonstrate how the crisis of the dialectic "the human, the bread and the beast" which opens wide, crosses the limit and manifests madness.
