This article proposes an analysis of the covers of Veja magazine on the activities of Operation Lava Jato — investigation of the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry. The intention of the study is not to exhaust the subject, but to discuss the social and political meanings produced by the narratives. Our hypothesis is that in addition to working on the spectacularization of corruption as news-value, Veja actively participates as an actor in the political game, not only being an observer of the crisis settled in Brazil, but encouraging the population to take to the streets and fight against governments and politicians in general.

The media crisis is linked to the crisis of public institutions. This shows the emergence of social practices focused on user activation and consequently, we can observe a decline of vertical mediation. However, these phenomena do not extend horizontally at a global level. With this study, we compare the results of a survey of more than two thousand university students from Mexico and Ecuador, in which we question the perceptions of these strategic groups about phenomena such as political participation on and offline, and political information consumption.

Recently, Uruguay’s cannabis market became regulated while the alcohol market regulation was discussed. Cannabis regulation policy receives more strong opposition than support among Uruguayan public opinion (Boidi, Queirolo y Cruz, 2016a). In contrast, alcohol regulation receives majoritarian approval (Cifra, 2015). Why are these two regulations, both discussed at the same historical time, receiving such a different support from citizens? Is it possible that media coverage on alcohol regulation is positive, while cannabis regulation is mostly negative? This article analyzes Uruguayan main press media coverage on both regulations, and identifies which are the predominant frames and the differences among the treatment received by each regulation.

This essay begins at the cultural capitals of today’s citizens in order to understand politics and make sense of it in the present times. There are three types of citizens: critics and cynics, who feel their consumption is counter-culture, who have networks as temples, who believe and disbelieve in politics; premodern citizens, who adjust their affections to their beliefs and turn their anger into a moral battle; modern citizens, who believe in ideas, parties, freedoms, institutions, rights. In this context it is understood why today our politicians are celebrities, pop intellectuals, practitioners of CEOcracy and religious and nationalist value oriented. It is said that political communication in the twenty-first century is an illegitimate craft that combines pre-modern morality with coolture, which has led democracy to become a zombie concept.

We focus on the Pacific Alliance by developing an interdisciplinary approach between political communication and international relations. Four government entities broadcast messages on social media about this intergovernmental international agency. 236 analyzed messages lead to identify how the Government deals with the reality and potential of the Pacific Alliance. It is a political communication deprived of “myth”, which does not contribute to build consensus; likewise, it is a matter of presence in the Pacific Alliance that underperforms its potential to foster a proactive international policy.

Considering the complexity of circumstances that journalism is facing, academia should rethink the classical conceptions of the profession, especially when they reduce journalism to abstract models disregarding reporters’ actual practices. Results of a global research propose a new definition of journalism, a profession caught between conflicting interests that lack the supremacy of news production, as it used to be in the past century. It is all about broadening the debate to reconsider the role of the journalist in the contemporary information report, beyond current concepts such as post-truth.

We studied the behavior of campaign hashtags on Twitter in the second round of Ecuador 2017 presidential elections. The study analyzed 10 trending hashtags attacking opponents. The data was captured and analyzed with NodeXL, an application used to analyze social network. The analysis verifies the central role of automated accounts or botnets in the creation of hashtags. The campaign against the opposing binomial, which combined real accounts of government party activists with botnets, was more effective versus the less coordinated opposition campaign against candidate Lenin Moreno. It also verifies the use of localized botnets, mainly in Argentina and Venezuela.
