A comparative analysis of the ability of humans and other animals is carried out, in order to determine if there is any kind of discontinuity between them. It is proposed that the key differential factor consists on the presence or not of self-transparent subjective interiority. This criterion serves to differentiate human consciousness from those that can occur in other animal species, as well as in other known complex entities. 

A number of ecologists and animalist activists reclaim the condition of person to superior animals. Besides the historical trajectory of this term and as a consequence of the atrocities inflicted to millions of innocent humans during the big Wars of the Twentieth century, different currents of Personalism reserved the word person to stress the very high dignity of each human being. This special condition is due to the constitutive rationality of our species. The essential ration-ality is what allows us to be radically self-conscious and morally free, to the point of being able to self-determine our own end. In this way, the concept person means the uniqueness of each human being. But, what happens with superior an-imals?

Resumen: El ser humano es un ser peculiar, ya que participa de diversos ámbitos sin agotarse en ninguno de ellos. En este artículo se elabora un análisis compara-do del ser humano con otros seres: los animales no humanos y las máquinas. De esta forma, se pretende poner de manifiesto las coincidencias y diferencias y, así, intentar bosquejar lo específicamente humano. Respecto a los animales, el ser humano comparte una dimensión biológica —no solo material, sino también psi-cológica— pero su condición de ser espiritual hace que el resto de dimensiones —incluido el propio cuerpo— tengan una orientación distinta. Respecto a las máquinas, si bien han demostrado una cierta “inteligencia”, es siempre una racio-nalidad prestada, que carece de la condición de ser libre tan propia del ser humano. Precisamente, esta capacidad de destinarse y entregarse es la caracterís-tica más propia humana. Palabras clave: ser humano, animal, transhumanismo, problema mente-cerebro. Personal being, peculiar being: About human boundaries and its differences with other beings. Abstract: The human being is a peculiar being, because it takes part in many fields without being restricted to them. This paper is a comparative analy-sis between the human being and other beings: non-human animals and machines. In this way, coincidences and differences will be shown in order to outline human specificity. Regarding to the animals, the human being shares with them a biological dimension —not only material but also psychological— but their spiritual nature causes their other dimensions —including their body— to have a different orientation. Regarding the machines, although they have demonstrated some intelligence, is just a borrowed rationality, without the char-acteristic human freewill. Resumen: Intentar hacer el ejercicio de concentrar las posibles respuestas a una pregunta tan fundamental es una tarea que se antoja imposible, y por esta misma razón ello no será aquello que pretenda abarcar en este breve paper. La meta será exponer algunas de aquellas de las posturas con las que estoy de acuerdo y en des-acuerdo para, de esta forma, intentar aclarar un poco mis convicciones personales. Palabras clave: singularidad, darwinismo, conciencia, computabilidad. What constitutes the human being as a human being? Abstract: Trying to do the exercise of concentrating the possible answers to such a fundamental question is a task that seems impossible, and for this very reason it will not be what I intend to cover in this brief paper. Resumen: Se expone en este trabajo el modo en que Arnold Gehlen sutura el dualismo entre espíritu y vida de Max Scheler. Gehlen, al investigar la diferencia en el plano meramente biológico de la motricidad, percepción e impulsividad humanas, del hombre con el resto de los animales, logra un sentido de la acción, que se vincula a la experiencia sobre el mundo y no al logos autoconsciente. Palabras clave: Dualismo, Bioantropología, Arnold Gehlen, Animales, Acción. Gehlen and the Suture of Schelerian Dualism Between Spirit and Vital Func-tions: the Specificity of the Human Organism. Abstract: This paper discusses the way in which Arnold Gehlen sutures the du-alism between spirit and life of Max Scheler. Resumen: El autor analiza la relación hombre-animal en el imaginario griego desde un ángulo concreto, como símbolo de la intervención de lo divino sobre lo humano y como vehículo de expresión de la identidad del hombre en la naturale-za. Los encuentros con los seres híbridos y las metamorfosis en otras especies son un lenguaje profundo de representación, una dimensión de lo sagrado, de aquello que provoca fascinación y terror, que acerca al hombre a situaciones de transi-ción, a un juego de espejos donde el animal es lo otro y donde se desvelan los anhelos del hombre por escapar al encierro de los límites de su condición. Palabras clave: híbrido, sagrado, dioses, metamorfosis, otredad y poesía. The man-animal relationship in the Greek Mythology Abstract: The author analyses the man-animal relationship in the Greek imagi-nary from a concrete point of view, as a symbol of the intervention of the divine over the human and as a vehicle for the expression of the identity of man in na-ture. Resumen: Es común el el pensamiento actual la negación o incluso la falta de percepción de una posible diferencia esencial entre el conocimiento humano y el animal. En este texto se presentan algunas razones de esta situación, se plantea si es adecuado usar el término conocimiento tanto para los hombres como para el resto de los animales y, desde una perspectiva aristotélica, se recupera un debate de la antropología del siglo pasado en el que se pone de manifiesto un aspecto de la cuestión frecuentemente pasado por alto en nuestra época. Palabras clave: conocimiento animal, inteligencia, antropología, Köhler, Pavlov, Scheler, Aristóteles. Human knowledge and animal knowledge Abstract: In contemporary thinking it is common the negation or even the inca-pacity of perceiving an essential difference between human and animal cognition. Resumen: El artículo tiene dos partes. En la primera se analiza la idea antropo-biológica en sí misma, considerando sus aspectos e implicaciones fundamentales. En la segunda parte, en cambio, desde una perspectiva histórica, se exponen al-gunos de los desarrollos más representativos de la idea antropobiológica, como ocurre en la obra de Aristóteles, Tomás de Aquino, Kant, Herder, von Uexküll y Lorenz. Palabras clave: Rasgos biológicos humanos atípicos, inespecialización morfoló-gica, indeterminación de la conducta, nueva valoración de la corporalidad humana. History of the anthropobiological idea. Abstract: This paper has two parts. In the first one the anthropobiological idea is analyzed in itself, regarding its fundamental aspects and implications. Resumen: El texto sugiere que tratar de comprender mejor la conducta animal supone hacerse cargo de que los animales no son diferentes de los seres humanos precisamente porque carezcan de conciencia o de inteligencia, y que hacerse car-go de esa tarea podría suponer mejoras de interés en nuestra imagen del mundo natural, porque podrían servir para acceder a otras dimensiones de la realidad que la conciencia animal sabe poner de manifiesto. Palabras clave: Conciencia, Filosofía de la mente, Sujeto, Inteligencia, Razón, Instinto. Animals and Possible Worlds Abstract: The paper suggests that a better understanding of animal behavior im-plies overcoming the idea that animals are different from humans precisely in that they lack awareness or intelligence.
