Tomás Llorens was one of the two non-architect editors of the Spanish magazine Arquitecturas Bis, published in Barcelona from 1974 to 1985. During the life of the magazine, Llorens participated in some of the most important debates that surrounded the so-called ‘after modern’ theoretical emergence, first from and within Spain, and afterwards in England. The paper aims to decipher two questions: the way in which theoretical tools from outside the discipline –human sciences and critical theory: semiotics, structuralism or sociology– were able to contribute to rethink architectural discourse and make theory understandable as a form of practice.

We identify the links related to both monumental space and metropolitan tissue in late Modernity. The context of the New Monumentality described by Sigfried Giedion during the mid-20th century saw the rise of political representation in examples like Brasília and Chandigarh, partially because of the formal and pragmatic experimentations that emerged in New York City. Devices like the Rockfeller Center ‘slab’ or the United Nations Headquarters scheme hoped to overcome the limitations of a reductionist modernity, whose approaches to symbolic and solemn issues had failed until then. Those were the first steps that would direct common purposes: to redefine the modern paradigm considering themes related to memory, monuments and the city. And that would reach a breaking point with the experiments in Brazil and India.

In the relationship of contemporary Architecture with place, urban silence is perceived as an integral part of a continuing sequence embedded in the built landscape. Under this approach, this paper discusses three works by Gordon Bunshaft, which illustrate different types of dialogic relationship between the spatial project and pre-existences: Lever House, the Pepsi-Cola Building and the addition to the Albright Knox Art Gallery, all of which are located in the metropolitan area of New York State. Their respective architectural resolutions sensitively and subtly express urban silence as a compositional element, in the form of an interstitial space between the new created object and the place in which it is embedded.

Since their popularization in the seventies, videogames have been the subject of continued criticism pointing their responsibility in the processes of disappearance of the ludic function of public spaces. In fact, the perception that digital entertainment will eventually overshadow playing on the streets is, still today, strongly rooted in the population. However, with the launch and massive success of the augmented reality game Pokémon Go in 2016, the idea has begun to arise that, far from contributing to the degradation of this activity, it can promote it and put it in value, placing again the focus on public spaces as places where to play.

The place is where the architect’s imagination is facing reality and stands as one of the starting points of architecture. With so much influence it was for Enric Miralles, who organized most of his projects based on his interaction with the place. He classified his work into three families and therefore, his idea of the place was based on these three criteria. In order to understand its architecture, it becomes imperative to begin to understand his conception of the place. We will analyze the three families with examples and conclude that a personal architecture can be realized, sometimes incomprehensible at first sight like the one of Enric Miralles, but so full of identity and rooting to the place, that becomes essential to materialize it.

A sort of tradition around educational architecture was forged in Chile in the mid-twentieth century, embodied by a series of remarkable works and projects. Some of these were the work of local figures such as Sergio Larrain García-Moreno, Emilio Duhart, Mario Pérez de Arce or Alberto Piwonka. All of them had a leading role in the materialization of the ideas of modernity in this country.Technical-constructive dimensions, environmental control, landscape design and implementation of formal abstraction criteria, all seem to meet in these scholastic buildings, providing answers to the educational problem with a novel range of possibilities.

Observation for an architect is a critical stance towards reality that implies an important abstraction. This ability to look at the place and translate it into drawings and texts adds to the act of designing a project the density of knowing that that place is now unique for the architect, providing the exceptionality of having been appropriated by means of thought. The article shows how the exercise of observing, proposed at the time by Alberto Cruz Covarrubias in an incipient School of Architecture and Design at the Catholic University of Valparaiso (Chile), has today full term and is an accurate and necessary working tool for the architect.

Is it possible to speak about a lightness typical of contemporary archi- tecture? And if this is so, how to characterize it? Taking as reference the exhibition Light Construction, which was held in 1995 at the MoMA, the theoretical proposal of its curator, expressed in the main article of the ex- hibition, its manifesto, is analysed. The reference to Duchamp appearing on it will help to start a reflection on the sense of architecture as a work of art that will shape the proposed concept of lightness. Comparing two simple actions such as Windows, an installation in Venice by Souto de Moura and the hotel adaptation by Nouvel in Lucerna helps to show the proposed idea of lightness.

A spiral is an imaginary vortex, a whirlwind of impulses and passions that traces complex itineraries. Introverted or expansive itineraries, of limited extension or logarithmic growths, finite or infinite. The imagination, developed in spiral or with the spiral, can act as the platform for a complete action, including the complex realm of emotions and relationships that might lead to crime. Nevertheless, this article focuses only on the spiral in architecture. In history there are examples of buildings that have been erected as a direct interpretation of the trace and meaning of the spiral symbol. Nonetheless, architecture can also serve as a tool to reread those spiral traces and invent other possibilities of imaginary structures.
