For some time, the history of religious incredulity, atheism and freedom of thought, has been primarily an intellectual history, based on the study of printed books and clandestine manuscripts. Furthermore this one has been focused on authors, mainly biographies, and sometimes this History has tried to define groups and network of thinkers who belonged to a written culture. This article attempts to show, through the particular study of Venice in XVIth and XVIIth centuries, that religious dissent, even this one that contains a radical germ like atheism or irreligiousness, has created a complex dimension in Early modern cultural and social history. And all this may be done without been unyielding and necessarily anchored in social and intellectual groups but by enlarging this reading of the history to wider sectors.

The essay examines the many voices of dissent that rose in Naples against the bull Circa pastoralis published by Pius V in 1566. The papal bull stipulated that all monks should be kept in close enclosure. The ribellion became especially from the monks of S. Gregorio Armeno and S. Patrizia. They were jealous guardians of their prerogatives and feminine exponents of the least accommodating fringes of the nobility Neapolitan. Many monks abandoned the convents to avoid rules; others were pushed away others were pushed away under the threat of weapons of by the secular arm of the viceroy. Some of them made the way of tribunals, both civil and ecclesiastical. In the records of these processes, the memories of their resistance to a norm would address then a more rigid monastic life, as well as the family relationships between and within monasteries.

As leaders of Calvinist movements of reform, the role played by John Knox and Théodore de Bèze in Scotland and Geneva, respectively, becomes crucial to understand the structure and organisation of a religious movement of reform that crosses political, i.e. national, borders. A selection of circa twenty letters originally written in Latin (and here translated into Spanish) and sent over a two-decade period (1561- 1582) constitutes the material from which to analyse the progress of the Calvinist cause in Scotland in particular, and in Great Britain in general.

Compostela is know as the final stop on the Way of Santiago. During the early modern era, it was the capital of the civil and ecclesiastical province, but also both the see of the Inquisition of Galicia and the University. Its peaceful life was shattered by the foreigners, pilgrims and travelers. A few of religious dissidents were coming as down the appearance of pilgrims. They were “heretics” of different confessions who were looking for the conversion to Catholicism. And many Irish catholic refugees who run away from a protestant power. This article focuses on the strategies of acceptance wielded by the ecclesiastical institutions and the vigilance of the Inquisition.

Since the end of 1589 the Gallican members of Parliament took strong anti-roman positions: they condemned the legatus Caetani as guilty of lèse-majesté, then in 1591 they accused the nuncio Landriano to have illegally entered France upon the orders of a “supposedly” Pope; moreover they were forbidding any communication with Rome. The Catholic followers of the King on the other side were trying to achieve peace with Rome or at least a rapprochement. Later it will be Henri IV personally to take this initiative. This article will explain this conflict between the Gallican members of Parliament and Rome during the years 1589 and 1592, analysing the position of the “hawks” opposed to any rapprochement, and the hope to be able to build an autocephalous Church of France, and the initiatives of the “doves”, more inclined to maintain the religious relationship with Rome.

In this paper we study several conflicts between the Monarchy and the Valencian Church in order to analyse the ressources that both powers employed to defend their position and jurisdiction. Our aim is to show how, in spite of the superiority pretended by the Crown, the eclesiastic institutions employed every tool they could so as to defend their liberties, but without necessarily questioning the said superiority.

The following article seeks to clarify conveniences or inadequacies of the use of the fifteenth-century Ars moriendi to reach a good death at the end of life. To this end, we will begin by describing the timeless experience that every dying person goes through in facing his own death, as long as it occurs consciously. In that description we will include the needs and the hopes that make up this experience. Subsequently, we will analyze the characteristics and the use of the Ars. From there on, we will examine its suitability to cover the needs and hopes described which arise inexorably in the later moments of life in an involuntary and spontaneous way.

This paper aims to show how the Protestant Reformation established a type of dissidence as represented in a new conception of the linguistic structure of writing. One has to take into account the strong enterprise of the translation of the holy scripture and new conception of rhetoric trying to do away with delectare in order to focus upon docere.
