Between 1967 and 1982, homosexual liberation movements emerged in Latin America that sought to unify strategies of social and sexual revolution. This article proposes a comparative study to rethink the periodization of the distinct selection of cases and analyze the similarities and differences between them. For this, the cases of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to find a different explanation for these movements that avoids viewing them as just a projection of the Stonewall uprising (1969), thereby bringing forward an explanatory variable from within Latin America. In turn, the respective relationships of these movements with the local radical Left and the State are also considered.

As inseparable dimensions of any reality, time and space have had a major impact on the emergence and establishment of the colonial society in Spanish America. However, the number of studies about the concept of time, its representation or its imposition in colonial areas is lower than the studies about territorial organization. For this reason, this paper focuses specifically on the imposition of Christian temporality in the Muiscas communities in the New Kingdom of Granada at the end of the sixteenth century. It is not an ontological study of time, but one to establish how your organization contributed to the maintenance of the colonial order and the construction of the identity of the colonial indigenous. To account for this, we analyze the Fray Luis Zapata de Cardenas discourse contained in the catechism published in 1576.

The debacle of East-European socialism provided some changes in the identification and subjective processes in relation to the social structure in Cuba, which can be observed by the reflexive distancing of the subjects from the various ideological objects. Cinema, as a cultural mechanism, informs us of this reality and introduces its director, his characters and the spectators into the dialectic representation-reception, in which subjective vision and objective reality are articulated. To show it, I analyze the film Conducta 2014 that combines the critical tradition of revolutionary cinema with some premises of socialist reality and its recent exhaustion. The reception of this film by the spectators informs that the parallax is open in contemporary societies by the displacements, identifications and the way of constitution of the subjects shown on the screen.

This article examines the reasons why Ifigenia and Las memorias de Mamá Blanca by Teresa de la Parra must be considered autobiographical novels. The essay reflects upon the peculiar relationship between autobiographical novel and writing practices emphasizing the strong metaliterary component in De la Parra’s work. The final section is concerned with the role that textual materials and writing and reading practices have in both novels in order toargue that their literary treatment reflects the role of submission and subversion adopted by female figures in the work of the Venezuelan writer.

This article analyzes the writing of forced displacement in the novel Montacerdos (1981), by the Peruvian author Cronwell Jara. The narration gives an insight in the mobile universe of migrant children and suggests a cultural construction of childhood that, in contrast to the hegemonic vision, validates its existence in the displacement. The marks of migration that shape the childhood of the principal characters are narrated through the memory of a female voice. The body and the house appear as topoi of violence and marginality.

This article explores film representations of José Martí in three periods of Cuban history: the Republic, Fidel Castro’s Revolution, and the post-Soviet era. These three periods witnessed an evolution in the cinematic use and exploitation of Martí’s symbolic capital. While the Republic endowed Martí with a religious and romantic aura, which turned him into a sacred hero, ICAIC filmmakers systematically resorted to Martí to manufacture a version of the past that would justify the new revolutionary order. Under State control, Cuban cinema in the 1960s and 1970s underscored one of the more recurrent ideas in the political imagery of the Revolution: Martí prefigures and announces Castro, who, in turn, incarnates Martí. The most recent representations, however, aim at demystifying and, therefore, humanizing, the Cuban hero’s image.

Water scarcity has been appointed as the key-limiting factor for the development of agriculture in the Peninsula of Santa Elena. To solve this problem, the Ecuadorian government carried out the construction of one of the biggest irrigation projects. However, after two decades of functioning, less than 30% of its capacity is being used. This article analyzes factors associated to Transaction Costs (CT), which can influence land use decisions. Options studied are: to invest in agriculture or livestock production, or to speculate with its value through land sales. The landowner’s decision problem is analyzed following the Heckman’s two-stage estimation procedure, which allows differentiating between factors associated to fixed and variable TC. The hypothesis is that factors related to fixed-TC influence the decision to participate (that is, the decision to use the land productively or speculatively, which is modeled in the first stage of Heckman’s); while both, factors associated to fixed and variable TC, influence the level of participation (that is, decisions about land allocation to one or each decision option, modeled in the second stage). The results show that access to assets and access to information are among the more influential TC factors, which favor agricultural production instead of land speculation.

Traditional methods for financial risk measures adopts normal distributions as a pattern of the financial return behavior. Assessing the probability of rare and extreme events is an important issue in the risk management of financial portfolios. In this paper, we use Peaks Over Threshold (POT) model of Extreme Value Theory (EVT), and General Pareto Distribution (GPD) which can give a more accurate description on tail distribution of financial losses. The EVT and POT techniques provides well established statistical models for the computation of extreme risk measures like the Return Level, Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall. In this paper we apply this technique to a series of daily losses of AFAP SURA over an 18-year period (1997-2015), AFAP SURA is the second largest pension fund in Uruguay with more than 310,000 clients and assets under management over USD 2 billion. Our major conclusion is that the POT model can be useful for assessing the size of extreme events. VaR approaches based on the assumption of normal distribution are definitely overestimating low percentiles (due to the high variance estimation), and underestimate high percentiles (due to heavy tails). The absence of extreme values in the assumption of normal distribution underestimate the Expected Shortfall estimation for high percentiles. Instead, the extreme value approach on POT model seems coherent with respect to the actual losses observed and is easy to implement.

The present work aims to study the trend that assumed the segregation in the city of Neuquén for the period between 2001 and 2010. With these spatial and temporal coordinates in mind, we propose a route which consists of three clearly differentiated moments. In a first section, a brief approach to the idea of segregation will be made, probing possible ways to measure it using the information provided by the national censuses of 2001 and 2010. Then, in a second section, we will describe the context that served as the scenario for the phenomenon we are trying to explain. We will dive around the economic and social effects of accumulation regime inaugurated after the exit of the convertibility. Finally, we will present the results obtained in the analysis of the territorial inequalities that crossed the city during the selected period. Throughout this itinerary, in order to enrich our approach to the phenomena that census sources show, we have developed thematic maps based on the use of Geographic Information Systems and an intensive use of journalistic documentation.
