The objective of the study is to determine the basic knowledge of intellectual property, as well as the perceptions and use of reference managers among health sciences students. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with students of dentistry, medicine, bacteriology, nursing, and surgical instrumentation. The results showed that respondents struggle to identify basic aspects of intellectual property, and only a portion of them include bibliographic references in written assignments, which puts them at high risk of committing plagiarism. Using reference managers is infrequent among students, mainly because they are unaware of these digital tools, have not received training, or believe that learning to use them requires too much time. Respondents agree that they would like to receive training for using these tools. It is concluded that students showed deficiencies in the fundamentals of intellectual property and the need for reference management training.

Current digital environments and the increasing information explosion have transformed the work of professionals, leading to the need for significant changes in higher education to develop competencies in the era of big data. The literature reveals how the traditional activities of library science professionals have evolved to face new challenges and emerging techniques and trends such as data science. This article presents a theoretical and methodological approach to the impending ontological impact on the discipline and its implications during the educational preparation in the field. The objective is to know the inclusion of data science courses in library science programs based on a review of undergraduate curricula from Ibero-American countries. Also, to identify research trends on big data management and related librarian profiles, as examined in scientific publications retrieved from the Web of Science database between 2015-2022, focusing on terms such as “data science,” “big data,” “data scientist,” “databrarian,” “databrarianship,” and “data librarian” within the fields of library and information science, followed by a content analysis using co-occurrence techniques and principal component analysis.

The objective is to present the meta-evaluation of the model for assessing Information Literacy, called Evalfin, to determine its value and improvement possibilities and, based on the findings, to offer a new graphic proposal. Two stages of analysis were developed: the first one emerged from the perspective of application experiences to analyze the results, and the second from a theoretical approach to examine the model’s design. The results confirm that it is a good model due to its robust and solid structure; nonetheless, they also reveal the need for improvement so that it can be used by others parties. It was identified that the main problem is the interaction of its components because their scope was not well defined according to the systemic approach structure. This research is important because it conveys the first metaevaluation of Information Literacy evaluation models and provides an assessment method, a map of evaluation approaches, and a systemic approach structure that may be useful for assessing other similar models.

To enhance user identification security and reduce unauthorized access, we developed a biometric authentication interface for the Koha Library management system at the National Polytechnic School. The project employed the Scrum methodology, which promotes an agile and collaborative approach. The interface was designed to operate with a SecuGen fingerprint reader that integrated the necessary technologies and adapted to the requirements of the Koha system, which was developed with the programming language Perl. The interface implementation successfully established effective communication between the biometric system and Koha and overcame technical challenges that may have arisen due to programming language differences. Furthermore, we confirmed that the centralized library system facilitates its maintenance and ensures information protection. Usage of this interface not only helps to reduce identity fraud and library material loss but underscores the need to strengthen information security in libraries in accordance with the Organic Law on Personal Data Protection [Ley Orgánica de Protección de Datos Personales] of Ecuador. The development methodology used proved to be the most suitable since it ensured efficient progress for the library and met the expectations of the system’s users.

This article aims to systematize the experience of identifying the Sustainable Development Goals concerning the functions and activities implemented by the Mesa de Bibliotecas de Instituciones de Educación Superior de Antioquia, Colombia. The methodology used is participatory action research as well as three working meetings that include methods such as participatory training, situational diagnosis, group workshops, and brainstorming. These meetings evidenced the cross-cutting nature of some joint activities and actions related to the Goals within the working committees. In conclusion, the incorporation of the Goals into the Mesa de Bibliotecas de Instituciones de Educación Superior strategy represents a crucial opportunity to strengthen the development of academic libraries and promote a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable society in the region.

The objective is to identify the ownership marks that constitute the Bibliographic Special Collection of Gregorio Torres Quintero Library of the National University of Education Sciences to establish the documentary collections that compose its bibliographic patrimony. We carried out a comprehensive review of 1 311 books in the collection, recording the property mark or marks related to the book in the item information and the bibliographic record. As a result of this process, we identified forty-nine property marks, thirty-six of which corresponded to institutional seals, twelve to personal ex libris and one fire mark. Identifying ownership marks in the Bibliographic Special Collection of Gregorio Torres Quintero Library allowed us to trace the National University of Education Sciences historical background while contributing to the study of the history of education in Mexico and the history of pedagogy-specialized libraries in Mexico.

Recently, in Mexico, initiatives including LGBT+ individuals in public libraries have emerged; however, these activities are far from providing data about this community, which has been studied scantly in the Mexican library field. For this reason, the objective is to show the results of the study conducted in the central public libraries of Mexico through the exposition of 48 topics on sexual diversity and their existence in their catalogues and inventories. The study undertakes a questionnaire sent to 32 central public libraries and consultation to the National Transparency Platform [Plataforma Nacional de Transparencia] of the Federal Government. The results show that only one library has 22 of 24 topics; contrastingly, 10 federated states only have between 1 and 6 themes. Likewise, this study displays omissions in the development of collections carried out by the General Directorate of Libraries [Dirección General de Bibliotecas] on topics such as International LGBT Pride Day, drag queen, same-sex marriage, transphobia, lesbophobia, transfeminism, among others; these last three do not exist in the libraries network. It is worth mentioning that this study is the first of its kind in Mexico and Latin America.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between the constructs of scientific communication competence and teaching digital competence in higher education using a restricted structural equation model. The study responds to a quantitative methodology of a descriptive-correlational type. We applied an ad hoc questionnaire to a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 624 higher education teachers in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The reliability results for each instrument scale were consistent, showing coefficients more than acceptable by the specialized literature. The correlation tests indicate a direct positive and significant association between the constructs of the model, discarding the null hypothesis. The findings reveal that the model is structurally adequate and did not indicate problems with validity, reliability, or adequacy.

This study aims to investigate the possible theoretical and empirical relationships between the implicit mediation of information in technological information processes to highlight potential niches for information professionals. To this end, it uses an exploratory and descriptive methodology based on bibliographic research developed in the CAPES Journal Portal, the Information Science Database, and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, with a time frame of the last ten years (2014-2023), and observed from a qualitative perspective and examined through content analysis. The results emphasize three categories related to implicit mediation with the work of information professionals, information representation processes, and social networks and algorithms. We conclude that implicit mediation of information is a growing theme with strong intersections with technologies that expands the boundaries of the discipline and includes themes such as data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.

This study focuses on the analysis of bibliographic productivity on the history and evolution of American librarianship from a gender perspective. From its beginnings, this discipline became a feminised profession in which women librarians played a fundamental role in its definition and consolidation. But as the sector became more professionalised, they lost representation and economic power, occupying positions of lesser responsibility and lower salaries. As a methodology, bibliographic research has been carried out in two databases (LISA, JSTOR) and an analysis and selection of the bibliographic production focusing on the relevance and number of publications. The results show an extensive bibliographic corpus starting in the 1970s, with its epicentre in the 1980s-90s. Many studies relate the discrediting of the profession to its feminisation. Despite the fact that female participation was key in the establishment and formation of the discipline, women librarians suffered a progressive loss of status during the professionalisation of the sector. The limitations generated by gender status frustrated many careers and librarianship is an example of the contradictions of this feminisation.
