In this paper, we focus on translating proverbs from French into Italian. We have established a corpus of sentences that sound like proverbs, taken from Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris. Starting from their linguistic and discursive features, we hypothesize that they include both real proverbs and “pseudo-proverbs”, i.e. proverblike sentences created by Victor Hugo. We have studied seven Italian translations of the novel, published between 1877 and 2003, in order to analyse how all these sentences are translated from French into Italian. Thus, our research deals with two scientific fields: paremiology and translation studies. After explaining how we established our corpus, we will try to make a distinction between proverbs and pseudo-proverbs (§ 1). Then we will show why, from a translational perspective, these two classes of sentences deserve the same treatment (§ 2). Finally, we will focus on the analysis of translation strategies used to recreate them in Italian (§ 3).

The pink pages of the Petit Larousse illustré constitute a familiar corpus, widely consulted by readers whether they are Latinists or not. These pages are not limited to Latin and widely accept Greek, English, German or Italian. Latin language is however predominant, for the reason that the use of the mother tongue expresses the proverbial wisdom of the ancients. This wisdom is partially understood by all due to the proximity of the word to the Romance language and its etymon. At the origin of Romanity, Latin can thus express advice for the use of all, legal concepts, proverbs, situational sentences, easy to place in conversations and agreeable to translate and gloss, while showing pleasantly its culture. This is one of the causes of their favour. All proverbs must be based on some authority. The proverb in Latin requires a translation, if the words it contains are far from their development in the Romance language. This study will analyze the corpus of the dictionary, classify its entries typologically and consider some aspects of their use, emphasizing the rather traditional wisdom they contain.

The medieval collections of Spanish proverbs present contents that challenge the modern reader because of their very heterogeneous character. This diversity obstructs any attempts at classification and apparently contradicts the idea that a proverb remains a proverb forever if a linguistic community has identified it as such. This is not the case: some proverbs disappear diachronically, while others are corrected to adapt to a system that imposes many constraints on statements. With the tools of current linguistics, which have defined the properties of the different classes and subclasses of proverbs, we propose to try to understand the mechanisms that presided over these rearrangements, these evolutions of the system as a whole and its standardization, particularly in terms of categories and semantic conceptualization of the proverb and related forms of sententious utterances.

This article first analyses the reasons for the absence of clear consensus among scholars and includes a summary of the main trends and methods in specialised literature, as well as a “scale of consensus” for definition criteria. The second part focuses on methodology and describes common pitfalls in traditional definition approaches. A series of principles is then devised in order to increase the efficiency of proverb definition. Such principles tackle issues such as the contents and form of a definition, the choice in the corpus or approach to define proverbs, or the redundancy of some definition criteria. They ultimately stress the necessity of a transdisciplinary, analytical approach that incorporates class hybridity.

The aim of this paper is to study the syntactic structure of a paroemiac subcategory: tautologies. We will observe the diachronic evolution of this type of formulas from the Middle Ages to the present day. The diachronic study confirms the idea according to which sententious phrases, in this case tautologies, are not transmitted in the same form from generation to generation. They adapt to the times in which they are uttered. The structures are reduced over the centuries in both French and Spanish.

This study aims at examining the three commonest thesis in paremiology, namely the antiquity of proverbs, their popular origin and their belonging to the category of idiomatic expressions. Based on both diachronic and synchronic data and through an examination of the syntactic, semantic and metric structures of proverbs, the study brings out the misdirection of such vulgatas, and suggests a new approach, mainly based on the concept of lexical schemata, with an emphasis on the importance of metric patterns within the process of creation and evolution of paroemias.

The signature books constitute a very interesting material to study, quantitatively and qualitatively, the discourse of positive assessment directed towards patient groups. We have accessed one of them, to preferably analyze the acts of gratitude (n = 145). We have also included data and interpretations on acts of presentation and identification (n = 376), descriptive-evaluative acts (n = 36) and acts of commitment (n = 32). The study demonstrates the importance of emotions among the causes of gratitude, to the detriment of the scientific content of the macro-event analyzed. The preferred structure of the acts of gratitude is the one formed by independent nucleus or by nucleus more specifying of gratitude (with or without intensification). Little relevance is given to the recipients. On the other hand, the scarcity of acts of commitment is surprising. Lastly, the authors of the messages show a basic understanding of rare diseases, but there are also fundamental gaps and errors.

Several authors have proposed to understand modernity as an awareness of the alienation that separates human beings from Nature, subject from object, consciousness from the world. Therefore, we can perceive in modern texts a longing for a return to the Absolute from which human being is isolated. Facing this fracture, the English Romantics coined the metaphor of the «covenant» or the «alliance»: a moment in which the split between the two isolated realities heals. This essay studies the inheritance of the metaphor and its implied ideas in Jordi Doce’s poetry. Nonetheless, Doce embraces a modern ideology that is not free from difficulties, frustrations and risks, so this essay also investigates the critical questioning of this heritage and the meanings of this question has for our time.

Digital music consumption on the Internet has increased rapidly in recent years. On Chinese music platforms, comment sections are designed for users to share their feelings while listening to the music. Comments in this new media environment have become an emerging digital genre that remains under-researched. This exploratory study seeks to investigate metalinguistic comments generated by Chinese fans of Álvaro Soler, a present Spanish singer. Drawing on a textual database of 745 language-related comments from Netease Cloud Music and following a «coding and counting» approach, this study reveals how music fans’ interest extends to Spanish and what they think of this language. In addition, results from this study also provide evidence of informal and interest- driven language learning by commenting on songs in this new virtual environment.

This contribution analyses the conceptional variation in Twitter communication based on the parameters described in Koch and Oesterreicher’s model ([1990] 2007). After outlining the foundations of variational linguistics and the position of conceptional variation within the chain of varieties, and after reviewing the presence of this model in studies of computer-mediated communication, the conceptional characteristics of Twitter communication are presented. The analysis focuses especially on the parameters of public/private communication, emotionality, referentiality and dialogicity, in which it is necessary to specify the distinctive characteristics of communication in social networks as opposed to prototypically immediate communication such as oral conversation.
