Resumen
The objective of this article is to reveal various details of the conflict between Bishop Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz and Juan de Mier y Salinas, the treasurer of the Puebla Cathedral. The relevance of their confrontation lies in three major aspects. First, it shows how the diocesan authorities in Puebla de los Ángeles were engaged in intense polemics during the 1690s, which contributed to the increasing social tensions in the city due to the scandalous nature both of the accusations themselves as well as the actions taken by those involved. Second, it allows us to study the connections and social relationships of the cathedral’s incumbents, as well their particular densities. Third, it allows us to understand the transformations undergone by the cathedral in terms of the administration of its economic resources, as this was one of the reasons that the Council of the Indies took such measures.

Resumen
This article analyzes the procedural dimension of litigation over a debt by the Toluca pulque concession that was initiated in 1749. It emphasizes both the mechanisms employed by the royal officials of the Purse of Mexico to collect payment as well as those utilized by the debtor, Nicolás de Azoños, to resist collection and then go on to defraud his brother, neighbors and the authorities of the Royal Treasury in order to obtain a second five-year pulque concession while avoiding the corresponding payments. This article offers an approach to the way that the Treasury’s jurisdiction was exercised to prosecute concessionaires who refused to make the annual payments that had been negotiated with the tax authorities of New Spain.

Resumen
The objective of this article is to understand the resolution of conflicts over the collection of tribute from the Crown’s subject peoples in the courts of seventeenth century New Spain. It addresses the connection between accounting judges and other judges with jurisdiction covering treasury affairs – commissary judges and executionary judges – to study how sentences were executed for debts by the primary collectors of Indigenous tribute: governors. Finally, it examines one of the procedures through which a sentence by an accounting judge could be modified or reversed: a petition before the General Indian Court.

Resumen
This article offers an approach to Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s Visión del paraíso and Edmundo O’Gorman’s La invención de América, emphasizing two significant parallels. First, they have a common interest in sources that demonstrated skepticism of existing beliefs: Edenic motifs for Brazil or geocentric precepts applied to newly-discovered lands. Through these sources, the two books characterize the meaning of the Iberian conquests as a transplantation of the peninsular order. Second, they coincide on Turnerian historiographic criteria that glorifies the frontier experiences of São Paulo and the United States as Americanization through autocolonization. Using this criteria, these authors criticize the inauthenticity or insularity of Ibero-America and instead propose the historical perspective of continental formation. This article contributes to staging a dialogue between two major works of twentieth-century Latin American historiography whose affinities remain unexplored.
