This article offers a contemporary reading of the foundational period of the Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales (Mexican Journal of Political and Social Sciences)(1955-1968), as part of the process of writing the history of social sciences in Mexico. The point of departure is the fulfillment of a commemorative cycle that marks 60 years of existence of the journal and its significance for our disciplinary communities. The place of the Revista is asserted in the framework of preceding journals of the beginning of the twentieth century and the original enunciation context is examined, as well as the communities and purposes that gave birth to it by the mid-fifties. Simultaneously, its thematic transformations and most meaningful contributions toward the shaping of the knowledge patrimony of political and social sciences in Mexico and in Latin America, are assessed, as well as of the institutional consolidation of these disciplines in the context of the Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (School of Political and Social Sciences of the UNAM). The text ends with a general outline of its later stages and of the cognitive possibilities, represented by the journal’s present professionalization and specialization phase, and its potential increase in the transmission and reception of its contents, in the horizon of the third millennium.

The changes in the socio-economic processes in recent decades have increased various ini- tiatives within the social and solidary economy that open up new problematic areas regarding to the naturalization forms present in the “new social issue”: the emphasis on feelings and human passions and changes in power relations. Our hypothesis lies in the transformation of the forms of workforce government pointing to the government of the potential of social relations, which we will call the government of possible. “Social” is constituted as an area to build new local relationships in an environment governed by inequality and competition. Our fieldwork in an initiative framed in the social economy, allow us to build some theoretical and philosophical critical reflections in relation to the changes in the forms of workforce government. In this sense, we will analyze some background on the idea of “desire” from the philosophy of Spinoza, and resignifications in the Theory of Human Action, by von Mises, in the context of neoliberal ratio- nality of government.

The study of public corruption has become particularly prominent since the 2008 international economic crisis. This kind of occurrence demands improving control of public funds to close the gap between public income and expenditure. However, certain theoretical and empirical connections remain ambiguous when researching determinants and therefore a significant amount of preliminary conclusions cannot be taken as a political or policy guide. Besides posing a pertinent literature examination, this paper holds that a central factor that limits the scope of corruption is the likelihood to be uncovered. Several econometric specifications are also considered, using a non-balanced facts panel incorporating figures for over 150 countries between 1995 and 2010, in order to identify how solid some statistical associations are, so that they could be taken as reference to design the necessary strategies towards corruption control.

This article reflects on the transformations that have taken place in Mexico City after foundational studies on global cities appeared in urban studies literature. The development of a range of researches on the impact that several megaprojects have had on the metropolitan dynamics and on the territorial socio-spatial organization, have determined the structuring of our contribution around three axis of analysis: the consolidation of hegemonic actors in the city’s production process; the rise of resistance processes against the implementation of megaprojects; and the emergence of new forms of social inequality. The analysis of each of these elements allows pondering which have been the most visible effects of the establishment of the neoliberal model, and concluding that today, as in the past, there is a direct relationship between the dynamism of processes of change and the urban transformation introduced by the neoliberal globalization process as well as in the increasing rise of social inequalities.

New subjectivities and emerging behaviors are linked to contemporary social conditions which question the limits between what is “appropriate” for men and “appropriate” for women. In this context, some modifications to the traditional mandates of femininity and masculinity multiply and gain social visibility. From the new gender technologies, interwoven with economic and cultural activities, new expressions of femininity, backed by a political discourse against machismo and on fairness develop, and an increasing amount of women incorporates the aspiration for equality, as they challenge certain restrictions to their entering into the political and occupational world. How are these changes in practices and emotions, produced by socio-historical conditions, expressed in Mexico? How do women who live in geo-historically marginalized zones construct their practice nowadays? What is the relationship of the reconfiguration of the feminine mandate, today evident among certain women, with feminist thought? To respond to these questions, this article analyzes the case of four women from the state of Guerrero (one of the most violent entities in Mexico) who have struggled and continue to struggle against machismo, military abuse and the de facto power of drug-trafficking.

This article analyzes the mass mobilizations that took place in the social space of the Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución de la Ciudad de México/Mexico City’s Main Square) during the 1960s of the past century. Social and political change is shown by comparing the mobilizations of the social bases in support of the governments of Adolfo López Mateos and Gustavo Díaz Ordaz with emerging social movements of the middle classes which confronted the political regime of the Mexican Revolution demanding political democracy, an end to authoritarianism and to the corporate association of organized workers.

This article acknowledges formal education is strongly influenced and outlined, from its bases, by eugenicist and social Darwinism foundations and orientations which make it highly prone to the production and reproduction of racism, in such a way that, with or without explicit or implicit racist contents, formal education offers conditions that allow racism to take place by the simple development of the corresponding educational curriculum. Yet, neither international organizations charged by their agendas with preventing and fighting racism, nor local institutions established in the country with similar aims, seem to take note of this fact, which is neither present in most of the Mexican research that explores racism within institutional education.
