In recent decades, the growing obesity epidemic in Mexico has become one of the most important public health challenges faced by the country. With support from the World Obesity Federation, we formed a working group in 2021 to identify and summarize priority actions that Mexico can take to face this epidemic. More than 1 000 health professionals joined the development and discussion process. Recommendations from previously published, high-level documents and guidelines were taken into account. In commemoration of World Obesity Day 2022, this statement is presented as input for health care professionals to develop actions to address obesity. The statement includes 10 recommendations that include population-level and individual-level actions. It emphasizes the importance of social participation, comprehensive interventions with a person- centered perspective, planetary sustainability, on improving education and communication campaigns, as well as fostering a built environment that promotes active living, and shielding prevention and control efforts from conflicts of interest. The statement calls for obesity to be treated seriously, based on scientific evidence, in a timely and comprehensive manner, employing a life-course and ethical approach that does not perpetuate weight stigma in society.

Objective. To determine the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among healthcare workers (HCW) and to identify factors associated with infection. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a Covid-19 hospital in Morelos, Mexico. Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid proteins were detected by ELISA. A bivariate and multivariable Poisson regression model were performed to identify factors associated with infection. Results. Among all participants, 31% had anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, while only 13.1% had reported a history of positive RT-PCR. Individuals who reported cohabiting with someone with Covid-19, and those who had a previous RT-PCR test, were more likely to be seropositive. Laboratory personnel had the lowest seroprevalence (12.0%), while social workers had the highest (35.7%). Conclusions. The results of this study show the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among HCW in a hospital in Mexico, and underline the importance of serological tests for a better estimate of prevalence in health systems where only symptomatic cases are recorded.

Objective. To analyze the role of socioeconomic and culture factors on the vulnerability to obesity in mothers and their two years’ old children, in urban communities of Southern Morelos, Mexico. Materials and methods. We conducted fieldwork and non-participative observation. During 2019, 17 semi-structured interviews were applied to a sub-sample of a cohort. Data were ordered and analyzed with the support of the Atlas-Ti v. 7 software, by using 18 free codes. Results. Social factors like family income and gender roles, combined with kinship influence and believings about children’s supposed preference for ultraprocessed products, are influencing on the availability of caloric meals and beverages that generate vulnerability to obesity in early childhood. Mothers’ economic activity, parents participation and to prevent influence of relatives can create opportunities for better quality meals and major physical activity. Conclusions. The low availability of healthy meals, the risks of food unsafety, and the familiar and culture factors, all of them as part of the described socioeconomic context, increase the vulnerability to obesity of mother-child binomial.

Objective. To analyze the relationship between binge drinking and psychological discomfort in Mexican adults. Materials and methods. We used data from the 2011 National Survey on Addictions in Mexico. A two-stage bivariate probit model with instrumental variables was used to address the potential reverse causality in the association between binge drinking and psychological discomfort. Results. Individuals who had at least one episode of binge drinking in the last year and in the last month are more likely to experience psychological discomfort. Conclusion. This study shows the relevance of developing prevention and treatment programs for people who consume alcohol in excess due to its negative effects on mental health.

Objective. To provide recommendations for the early lung cancer diagnosis in patients with risk factors at primary care and their timely referral. Materials and methods. This clinical practice guideline (CPG) was developed to establish recommendations based on the best available evidence and agreed upon by a group of experts representing different health sectors. A multidisciplinary group of experts that conformed to the Guideline Development Group (GDG) and conducted detailed scientific evidence research that answered the clinical research questions. The modified Delphi Panel was used to achieve an adequate consensus on the recommendations contained in this CPG. Results. Fourteen recommendations were generated following the standards of a CPG. Conclusion. LC represents a public health concern in México. Therefore, this guideline establishes recommendations to support decision-making regarding early detection and referral of LC in primary care health services.

The Covid-19 pandemic revealed once again the unsustainable social inequities that resulted in a disproportionate number of illnesses and deaths among different social groups. Public health must take its leading role in public policy to advance the social determinants that affect the health and well-being of populations. Public policy and the workforce must continue to prioritize population’s wellbeing and health equity by challenging the status quo. Thus, it is a pressing necessity to evolve and transform public health education by developing and integrating the culture of agile change, embracing structural transformations and shifting to a lifelong learning approach. The paradigm shift in public health education should emphasize interprofessional and intersectoral approaches, the development of human and social competencies, a lifelong learning perspective and the implementation of new pedagogical and technological strategies. A holistic curricular approach which highlights the importance of public policy and the right to health and social justice should also be emphasized. This transformation must occur taking into account/considering faculty development, investment in technology, flexibility for accreditation, and collaboration with employers in various sectors. Public health education must evolve in order to remain relevant and adequately prepare and equip the leaders and practitioners that the world requires. The current crisis is an opportunity to renew and redefine public health education.
