The article discusses the narrative turn as a key for the analysis of sociological/social theories. To that end, we present (as a sort of “case study”) some preliminary results of an inquiry around the theories of modernization put forward by the Italian-Argentine sociologist Gino Germani. We look into the narrative of transition, its paradoxes and a counter narrative found in some of his works. From this point we draw some conclusions about the limits of the "narrative turn" as a perspective for social theory analysis and display, as an alternative, Foucault's perspective of re-problematization. We primarily look into the danger of homogenization that the “narrative turn” entails, in spite of the heterogeneity of elements which, as we shall argue, form the modernization theory found in Germani. In this sense, towards the end, the article seeks to contribute to a reflection on the work with theoretical texts and proposes an approach able to observe the historical and material singularities involved in his production.

The objectives of this research were, on the one hand, to measure and to quantify the scientific production of teachers and researchers of the School of Languages of the National University of Cordoba between 2008 and 2011; and, on the other hand, to qualitatively analyse and to interpret scientific production within a critical hermeneutical approach. The research was exploratory-descriptive, and was carried out through a mixed methodological approach, quantitative and qualitative. Among the findings, it can be mentioned that the scientific field of the institution is in a moment of self-awareness and reflexivity, that there is a predominance of a professional university model that is in conflict with the production model of scientific knowledge, and that scientific-academic university policies have an impact on the scientific field of the School. There were also several observable issues, namely the academic transformation of the teaching role into teacher-researcher; the absence of a strategic policy of priority areas, the existence of a genuine place for research (infrastructural, academic, economic); the detection of closed groups as "invisible colleges" or "scientific schools" organized around "insular research projects"; and the personalization of the areas and lines of research according to the historical process of the scientific field.

This article examines two criteria for the existence of mental states, namely, Descartes and Turing’s. While the former holds that machines can’t think in principle, the latter is an advocate of machine intelligence. Despite this, both views seem to be similar in relation to how mental states are judged to exist. Even though this is expected from Descartes’ rationalism, it seems surprising in Turing’s functionalism. Indeed, no interpreter of the Imitation Game acknowledges that the interrogators can’t be replaced and, further, that such interrogators apply an internist criterion to judge whether they are in presence of a mind or a machine. This issue, which involves an internist approach to the mind, makes the Turing Test difficult for a machine. For this reason, I conclude that Turing’s test is not only unable to replace the question: can a machine think? In addition, it dramatically shifts the focus of the debate onto the philosophy of mind.

Although the link between epistemic and ontological aspects of social reality has always been a problematic issue for the social sciences, this debate loses centrality from the second half of the twentieth century. This article critically reviews the epistemic reasons for that loss, mainly in relation with "hard" constructivism, arguing for the need to return to the ontological debate about sociological foundations. At the same time, it presents a theoretical proposal: social ontology constitutes itself epistemically; that is, the question about “the social” inevitably involves the question about beliefs that constitute it. But social reality is not exhausted in beliefs, since it requires a material component to exist. From this proposal, this paper makes an explicit defense for a realist approach in sociology. To do this, critically reviews John Searle’s social ontology and makes concretes contributions to sociological theory, emphasizing the importance of action, power and causal reciprocity between individual and society, to have a social ontology that shows the specificity of the social.

In the field of organizational communication, the notion of autopoiesis has been mostly used to explain the mechanisms that constitute organizations in autonomous systems. In this paper we argue that to better understand the autonomy and the constitutive mechanisms of organizations we need to study the narrative processes that distinguish organization as a unity. This statement is based on two premises: first, the intrinsic relation between autopoiesis and the interpretative capacity of living beings; second, the importance of the act of distinction in the sensemaking process, from which we differentiate the unity from a ground.

The problem of identity is one of the milestones of philosophical thinking. It is a complex question, a prism with multiple vertices. In this paper I will focus on two key-concepts related to identity, namely, death and community. Death stands as end of life, but as a possibility of it. The ghost "appears", then, in a privileged position for the dialogue and the understanding of this phenomenon. Moreover, as social beings, neither individuals can be separated from the community in which they are registered; nor it is possible to distance the ghosts and functions historically fulfilled in this respect. Throughout the text I will discuss the functions that have been and those that would be of ghosts; understanding ghosts as a referring dialogic and therapeutic constitution of identity.

The essay aims to offer some thoughts about the configuration of the subject as a category of analysis for the understanding of citizenship. For this purpose, two key dimensions are outlined: ideal and empirical. The arguments presented allow an understanding of citizenship as a symbolic construct fraught with tension, beyond the legal and administrative dimension; for example, through its links with migration, racism and identity. Finally, it presents what we have called the ideal-empirical subject, as a construct that contributes to the understanding of social reality from the perspective of the subject as irreducible singularity. The central thesis of this essay is that citizenship, as a construct supported in the inclusion exclusion dichotomy, operates as a shaping element of the ideal-empirical subject in modern societies, and more specifically in globalized post-industrial societies.
