In the early sixteenth century, the political relations between the various European monarchies and the consequent diplomatic practices were under a process of deep transformation that culminated in the birth of modern diplomacy, expressed in its finished form in the figure of the permanent ambassador. This process emerged and took effect in the Italian peninsula, very specifically in Rome. This represents the content of the report entitled Tratado que hum criado do duque de braguança escreueo pera sua senhoria dalgumas notauees cousas que vio hindo pera Roma. E de suas grandezas E Jndulgençias, E grandes aconteçimentos que laa socçederam em espaço de sete años que hi esteue. Written by an anonymous Portuguese nobleman, servant of the 4th Duke of Bragança, D. Jaime, who lived in Italy between 1510 and 1517, this document reveals how at the dawn of the sixteenth century the mirabili urbe still maintained a founding centrality, imposing itself not just as the spiritual headquarters of the Christian world but also as a cosmopolitan city, the Renaissance cultural icon and the major center of political power where coeval potencies disputed hegemony over the Old Continent.

This article discusses the presence of university manuscripts for the study of theology in the Monastery of Alcobaça library. Some were copied in the pecia system and can therefore be placed within the context of the University of Paris in the second half of the thirteenth century, specifically at the College of St Bernard. The acquisition of these manuscripts by the monks of Alcobaça accompanied the growing importance attributed by the Cistercians to university studies from the same period onwards. This also extends to reflecting on the cultural dynamism of this monastery.

This essay aims to explore the Portuguese peregrinatio academica throughout Christendom between the 12th and the 15th centuries. Based on a prosopographical survey, we analyse this phenomenon in two different moments (before and after the foundation of the Portuguese studium generale in the late-13th century), examining the migration trends, the fields of knowledge studied as well as the careers of these men after their passage through several European universities concerning the regnum, the sacerdotium or the studium.

There is a deficiency of studies on the reformists of 15th century Portugal. Their individual trajectories and proposals to reform religious life are difficult to assess from the work available on the episcopate and the religious orders of Portugal, besides the relations between this country and the papacy. This paper contributes to a better understanding of these issues through an examination of the life of Dom Afonso Nogueira, a founding member of the Congregação de São João Evangelista, bishop of Coimbra (1453-1460) and later archbishop of Lisbon (1460-1464). This analysis enables an observation of how family, social placing and Church reform variously emerged as determining factors in different stages of Nogueira’s life.

After the Council of Trent (1545-1563), the brotherhoods under invocation of Blessed Sacrament, just like it happened with the brotherhoods of Souls and the brotherhoods of Rosary, have known massive diffusion. Through unpublished documents, we intend to study the Blessed Sacrament brotherhood of Veiros, Estremoz. In chronological terms, the study covers the years of 1795-1802, period for which exists documentation. Our text intends to study two main aspects: the brotherhoods leaders and the economic support. We will focus our analysis on individuals who administered the brotherhood; and the sources of income in the overhead, and the percentages spent with religious festivities.

After more than ten years of continued restrictions on religious freedom, in 1926 the Mexican bishops declared that since there were no minimum conditions for the priests to continue ministering. In this moment, many Mexican Catholics, because they had no choice to defend their religious freedom, they chose the path of arms: this is what is known as “Cristero War”. This brief paper provides the most important features to examine this stage in the history of Mexico.
