Resumen
A new species from Ecuador; Solenidium portillae (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae) is described, com- pared with the other two accepted species in the genus, and illustrated. A brief history of the genus is pre- sented and a key to the species is provided.

S e e d d o r m a n c y a n d g e r m i n a t i o n o f E n t e r o l o b i u m c y c l o c a r p u m ( F a b a c e a e ) : R e s u l t s o f a n unpublished work and an unsuccessful experiment. In Costa Rica, it was determined that in order to reproduce the tree species E. cyclocarpum, selected seeds might weigh 0,7 to 1,0 g. In general, the weighti- est fruits have the greatest mass of viable seeds, so that these fruits might contain the better seeds to be selected. Some seeds of this species germinated after 13 years of dormancy. Now there is evidence that the seeds of a particular crop are predeterminate to germinate in different times, this fact revealing a mid- and long-term advantageous reproductive strategy.

Resumen
The new species Stellilabium smaragdinum is described and illustrated from the montane oak f o r e s t s o f t h e C o r d i l l e r a d e T a l a m a n c a , C o s t a R i c a . A m o n g t h e s p e c i e s o f S e c t . T ae ni or hac hi s , S. smaragdinum may be recognized for the inflorescence bearing 1-3 (4) simultaneous flowers, the oblong to ovoid, rounded basal lobules of the lip, the non-ciliate margins of the lip midlobe and the peculiar colour of the column setae, cream banded with purple.

Resumen
A c o m p l e t e c o m p i l a t i o n o f a l l c u r r e n t l y r e c o g n i z e d s p e c i e s o f o r c h i d s ( O r c h i d a c e a e ) k n o w n f r o m Costa Rica, and documented by a voucher specimen cited in the text, is presented. Species are listed in alphabeti- cal order. For each especies the accepted synonyms and species names used in older treatments are included, together with bibliographical references. For some of the critical taxa brief taxonomic observations are given. The synopsis includes 1360 species in 180 genera, of which 287 species are recently described or were not reported in earlier studies. The species endemic to Costa Rica represent 26% of the reported species. The new combination Echinella vittata and the new name Stelis megachlamys are proposed.

Resumen
The occurrence of Cyclopogon obliquus (J.J. Sm.) Szlach. [= Pelexia obliqua (J. J. Sm.) Garay] is reported for the first time in Costa Rica. Its taxonomic placement is discussed, and its current geographic distribution is reviewed. Observations on its habitat, phenology and reproduction are presented.

¡He allí al hombre, conocido por su sabiduría! Esta frase latina del título resume mi memoria del Dr. Luis Alberto Fournier Origgi, eminente ecólogo, botánico y agrónomo de la Universidad de Costa Rica (U.C.R.) fallecido sorpresivamente el pasado 5 de julio. La gran labor científica y agronómica del Dr. Fournier pasó desapercibida para muchos, porque él nunca buscó imagen o renombre.

Resumen
Heliconia rodriguezii was described in 1982, but all the Costa Rican specimens were at the USJ Herbarium. Isotypes were distributed to other herbaria lately in May and June 2002. Moreover the herbarium acronyms for the isotypes are erroneously cited in the original publication. Notes on distribu- tion, ecology, and morphology of this rare, endemic, and poorly known species are given.

Resumen
The natural hybrid Trichopilia x ramonensis (T. marginata x T. suavis) from the San Ramón region of Costa Rica is here described and illustrated. The name of this hybrid was used for the first time in 1992, nevertheless it has so far not been validly published.
