Through the theories on migration that consider social networks and social capital, this paper compares the socioeconomic trajectories and geographic mobility of Korean and Lebanese migrants and their descendants who once lived in the town of Motul, Yucatán (Mexico). This analysis sheds light on the reasons for the sharply different paths taken by two of the most representative migrations in Yucatán in the early 20th century. It describes the organization of a Lebanese community with a strong sense of identity and economic power in comparison with a dispersed Korean migration that failed to establish strategies of solidarity and mutual support to guarantee the same success as that of the Lebanese

This paper analyses the vulnerability of foreigners in the Spanish labor market by conducting empirical analysis based on Spanish statistics. This article goes in depth the tendencies (especially during the current financial crisis, 2008-2012) and the determinants of the vulnerability of foreign workers, mainly non-EU countries immigrants. On the one hand, an increase of unemployment rate of foreign workers, a loss of occupational biography, a long distant between Spanish and foreign salaries and finally, more difficulties to obtain incomes for foreigners, represent the main tendencies. On the other hand, the concentration in less qualified occupation, a higher rate of temporary contracts, the inflexible regulation and the decrease of the negotiation power of Spaniards, lead to suppose a higher vulnerability of foreigners in Spain.

This article examines the main changes to immigrant integration policy in Spain following the impact of the economic crisis. To this end, it analyzes the way legal immigration continues to be strictly bound by the labor market. The fact that demand for foreign labor has fallen makes it difficult to reconcile immigration with inclusion. One of the clearest indicators that integration is not a priority in Spain is the significant restriction of immigrants’ rights, particularly in relation to healthcare. This situation underlines the compelling need to develop a multidimensional policy that considers those in Spain with a migrant background as individuals with rights. Such a policy must introduce plans and measures that support social cohesion from a perspective of fundamental legal equality.

This article analyzes the use of remittances by recipient families in Mexico. The results show regional differences, in the sense that the migratory tradition of a region explains that a greater proportion of remittances are intended for business investment. Two facts favor this relationship: the higher age of migrants and heads of households receiving remittances (which, therefore, are in a more advanced stage of the life cycle of savings), and the greater development of the institutions involved in the migration process. The data used for this analysis comes from the Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares (ENIGH) and from interviews with the resident colony of Guanajuato in California, United States.

The Mexican government has sent men and women to Canada under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) since 1974 and through the Pilot Project since 2009. From an anthropological perspective, this research uses the theory of social representations and a multimethod comprising evocative words, semistructured interviews, scales of values and participant observation to explore migrant men’s representations of the inhabitants of Saint-Rémi, Quebec, understand how these representations are conceived and examinerelations between the two groups. The structural notions of representations were: Canadian-Quebecers are individualistic, exclusionary and racist, Latin American-Quebecers are supportive, Canada is a place of opportunity and agricultural work is hard.

From 2004 to 2010, Arizona’s administrations and Congresses implemented a broad series of policies against undocumented immigrants, including the passage of more than 40 laws. This article analyzes the reasons for the existence and restrictive sense of the harshest of all these laws, Arizona sb 1070. The author analyzes both its approval by voters and the motivations of political leaders for passing it. He argues that this law is the result of electoral interests and promoting a state- and nationwide anti-immigrant agenda with voter support.
