The treatment of corneal lesions continues to be a topic of great interest. However, despite the development of new technologies and due to the slow evolution and uncertain healing of corneal lesions, they still represent a public health problem since patients can be affected for life, affecting the family and the health system due to the costly and uncertain response to treatment. For this reason, the need arises to seek therapeutic alternatives to treat these patients.

Given the importance of the research component to respond to phenomena and problems demanded by society , At Universidad Ricardo Palma, research has been fostered and promoted as an institutional policy. The Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias Biomédicas, which reports to the Rectorate and is integrated into the Facultad de Medicina Humana, has been working to contribute substantially to this growth in research.   The research is directly related to the quality processes of higher education, innovation, extension, linking, licensing, accreditation, and finally, the ranking of universities. As is evident, the research is linked to the present and the future of universities. Therefore, measuring the impact of research is essential because educational institutions are and must be permanent generators of intellectual property, knowledge and human resources, which impact the educational, scientific, economic and social sectors.

Introduction: Self-medication is a common practice to alleviate symptoms of various diseases in child population such as pharyngitis and rhinopharyngitis that are common in health centers in Peru. Objective: To determine the factors associated with self-medication in children with upper respiratory tract diseases. Material and methods: Cross-sectional analytical observational study. The sample size was 206 parents who went with their children to the Emergency Service. A questionnaire approved by Valenzuela. M and the SPSS program were used to find the frequency, bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis of Poisson. Results: The prevalence of self-medication in children was 91.3%. Parents who only studied primary and secondary school were more likely to self-medicate their children APR=1.22 (95% CI: 1.01-1.40). The firstborn were protected from self-medication APR=0.86 (95% CI: 0.76-0.97). Parents who were between 20 and 29 years old obtained APR=1.04 (95% CI: 0.96-1.13), children under 7 years old, APR=0.99 (95% CI: 0.91-1.07) and parents who had 1 child APR=1.04 (95% CI: 0.90-1.20). Conclusions: The educational level and the order number of the child, such as being the firstborn, had a significant association with self-medication in children.

Introduction: Excess body weight affects the quality of life of millions of young people around the world.  Objective: To determine the factors associated with the prevalence of overweight and obesity in university students during COVID-19, from October to December 2020.  Methods: Analytical, cross-sectional research with non-experimental design. There was a population of 325 students of the professional career of medical technology and a sample of 169 students of both sexes. Body mass index and waist circumference diameter were used to calculate overweight and obesity. The associated factors were determined by means of a survey validated by expert judgment.  Results: 49.1% of the students were overweight or obese, with females being the most affected. Of overweight or obese students, 59.0% were at high risk of abdominal obesity. According to eating habits, 97.6% of young people ate three or more meals per day, 81.9% consumed foods rich in carbohydrates and 54.2% consumed junk food 1 -2 times per week. In relation to sedentary lifestyle, 71.0% of students remained seated between 5 and 8 hours a day, 67.4% slept less than 7 hours a day and 57.8% did not perform any physical activity.  Conclusions: The intake of food with high carbohydrate content, junk food, hours spent sleeping and sitting daily are the factors associated with the high prevalence of overweight and obesity among students during the COVID-19 period.

Introduction: Case reports are a type of biomedical publication that allow us to share experiences regarding the etiology, diagnosis, therapeutics, and prognosis of anecdotal events that occur both in one and in several patients during clinical practice. Objective: to elaborate methodological recommendations for the elaboration of the discussion of a clinical case report. Methods: A narrative review of international guidelines and available evidence was carried out. Results: A total of 411,227 articles were located, finally selecting 10 narrative review articles. Discussion: The discussion is the most relevant section of the case report despite being considered by some journals as an optional contribution. We recommend for the elaboration of the discussion, to follow the following four steps: a) finding and comparison with the current evidence, b) justification of the causality of the findings, c) limitations and strengths in the management of the exposed case and d) clinical implications and prospects for the future. Conclusion: It is recommended to follow the four sequential steps for the elaboration of the discussion and to evaluate its impact on the scientific production in undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Inflammatory transverse myelitis is a rare condition that affects one or more levels of the spinal cord. Its etiology includes multiple sclerosis, infectious causes, or disorders within the spectrum of neuromyelitis optica. It presents acutely with motor, sensory, and/or dysautonomic symptoms, such as those related to the gastrointestinal and urinary systems. Diagnosis is based on symptomatology, evolution, and is confirmed by lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance imaging, and complete blood analysis. We present a clinical case of a patient with transverse myelitis who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms, motor symptoms, and was diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging.

The fibular aplasia, tibial campomelia, oligosyndactyly (FATCO) syndrome is characterized by the variable leg anomalies. The genetic etiology of this disease has not been determined to date; however, it has been suggested that the genetic inheritance is autosomal dominant. The frequency of presentation globally is infrequent and this is the main reason for the low number of patient reports. We report the unusually high presentation of 14 Peruvian patients diagnosed at a single center with the clinical features of FATCO syndrome over a 13-year period. We compare and discuss the clinical and radiological data of our patients with those of the 14 cases described worldwide. In addition, the demographic characteristics, family history, sex, age, and concomitant anomalies are analyzed.

Mr. Editor: I had the opportunity to review an article published in the first edition of the journal of the Facultad de Medicina Humana de la Universidad Ricardo Palma this year, which is entitled consumption of foods rich in antioxidants in outpatients with diabetic retinopathy at the hospital la carlota during 2021, identified with DOI n° 10.25176/RFMH.v22i1.4121 and written by Raquel Martínez-Kurata, et al., where they sought to find the amount of antioxidant consumption focusing on vitamins C, E and selenium in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), which managed to capture my attention and aroused my curiosity, motivating me to seek more information about it. Let me comment on some points of view in common with the authors.

Neonatal gastric perforation is a rare but potentially fatal pathology; its recurrence is even more infrequent, and there are few reports in the international literature. We present the case of a premature newborn (32 weeks) and low birth weight (1725g) who, on the first day of life, presented a surgically corrected gastric perforation and on the fourth postoperative day was re-operated with a presumed diagnosis of gastric raffia dehiscence, finding a new gastric perforation, which was surgically repaired. On both occasions, the surgical intervention was early. The subsequent evolution and outcome were favorable.

Sr. Editor After reading the article by Lobato-Jeri, C et al. which is entitled "Clinical surgical characteristics of patients aged 75 years or older colostomized in the national hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins with DOI: 10.25176/RFMH.v16.n2.667, published in 2016, in your prestigious journal of Facultad de medicina humana de la Universidad Ricardo Palma, I must say that it has been a pleasure to have studied it, because it deals with a very relevant topic for the public health of our country. This study covers the characteristics that exist in elderly patients who underwent colostomy surgery. What caught my attention was that, of the patients analyzed in their publication, a large percentage (42.11%) had unresectable colorectal cancer that caused intestinal obstruction, which led them to have a colostomy.
