Resumen
Victor Serge, Erich Fromm y Herbert Marcuse forged some of the first interpretations regarding Nazi and Soviet totalitarian regimes. The particularity of their work in the 1940’s, resided in the interlinking of Marxist and psychoanalytical concepts to understand the rationality underlying Nazism and Stalinism. Parallel to this, they formulated proposals to renew socialism in a democratic sense. These three authors coincided in putting forward that, beyond political repression and bureaucratic control, totalitarian rule was implemented through a powerful ideological apparatus that had taken root in the individual and collective subconscious. Furthermore, they considered the importance of intellectual work to be linked to the psychological mechanisms that sustained the totalitarian phenomenon with the aim of eradicating it.

Resumen
Although almost two centuries ago the typical mass society of today began to develop in the Western world, and with it became a problem of great relevance to study the way in which individuals form their opinion in interaction with the social environment, in today’s world, with the full extension of traditional communication media and with the impetuous arrival of social networks, it is much more pertinent and necessary to undertake the study of this issue, which is precisely the subject of this book of Cass R. Sunstein.

Assmann, Jan

Resumen
In this article, Assmann echoes the criticism of “book” religions made at least 130 years ago by Max Muller. But he does so in an extremely remarkable way. He incorporates the fundamental idea of religion as a language that communicates with various technical devices (rituals, spells, and of course alphabetic writing that will end up constituting a canon, a religious semantics proper) with definitive consequences for the modes of religiosity and for the forms which cultures acquire. Assmann clearly defines world religions as transnational religions subject to missiological approaches and, therefore, capable of being fully incorporated into postcolonial studies. We are also facing a text where religious and scientific semantics have a fortunate encounter.

Resumen
In this research note I focus on building a theoretical and methodological framework to analyze the relationship between representation, gender and ethnicity/racialization in various audiovisual products in Mexico from the period between 1980 and 2020, with the aim of articulating notions that allow me to get closer to the new filmmakers who are producing audiovisuals about racialized or ethnicized populations, I am particularly interested in analyzing how non-white women are represented: indigenous, black-Afro-Mexican and mestizo. This writing is part of a broader research on cultural studies, gender and critical studies of race in Mexico that seeks to think about racialized and ethnic identities from the ways in which they are represented in products of what has been called “culture popular” such as the soap opera, the cinema or in recent years the format of series broadcast via streaming.

Resumen
Semán’s book Vivir la fe thoroughly analyzes Argentinian popular sectors’ ways of believing after the democratic recovery. Through a review of the concept of syncretism, the author describes the main features of a religious experience that emphasizes the everyday nature of the miracle, while dialoguing with cultural matrices such as Peronism, psychologization and youth culture. The work also contributes substantive theses for the contemporary sociological field, such as the explanation of the Pentecostal rise at the expense of Catholicism, the limits of the partidization of religious identities, and the real effects of the theology of prosperity on believing subjectivities. The findings are supported by classic ethnographic work, combining in-depth interviews with participant observations.

Resumen
Within the recent and abundant literature on extractivism in Latin America, the bibliographical contributions specifically aimed at reflecting on the empirical grounds, the theoretical contours and the analytical challenges that can be framed in the category of agrarian extractivism are, in a certain sense, less numerous. The compilation edited by McKay, Alonso-Fradejas and Ezquerro-Cañete shows how the aforementioned literature interpelles researchers with recent work in rural Latin American contexts, who reflect and speak in various ways about agrarian extractivism on the continent. This review looks at the contents of this work considering the discussions that authors have when participating in the collective reflection, but also explores some of the questions that remain open for more and new research.

Wealth inequality is a problem of historical dimensions in Mexico, which has characterized the country for centuries. This research note introduces a study designed to improve our understanding of contemporary inequalities by analyzing wealth accumulation strategies from the past. Concretely, the study aims to examine the role of matrimonial alliances in the reproduction of inequalities in the 19th Century. To this end, it focuses on a mechanism of intergenerational wealth transfer broadly applied in independent Mexico that contributed to the formation and consolidation of elites: the institution of the dowry. Together with Diego Castañeda Garza we will explore endogamic practices among pre-revolutionary elites and their consequences for wealth concentration in Mexico, focusing particularly on the role and status of women.

Resumen
A characteristic of the ideology of mestizaje is to deny racism. Racial inequality and privilege are blurred through a constant effort to validate and reclaim the hegemonic discourse which, under mestizaje, states that racial conflict has been resolved. Here I present three strategies that attest to how mestiza society responds at times when racial conflict –anti-indigenous racism in this case- becomes visible. I explore how they translate into mechanisms to achieve the “moral regulation” of social relations (Corrigan, & Sayer, 1985). The first mechanism I define as “mestizo innocence,” the second is a response from the perspective of “mestizo fragility” and I identify the third as neo-populist mestizaje, an updated version of the mestizo project of the twentieth century.
