In her book Who Cooked Adam Smith's Dinner? A Story About Women and Economics Katrine Marçal criticizes economic science. Specifically, taking the homo economicus as a basis to design value, equity and richness measurement criteria. For this purpose, the author recovers feminist reflexions on care work and economic independence, a crucial feminist objective that has become treacherous for many women. By criticizing homo economicus, this book shows that this is a conceptual corset when approaching people and their roles in the market.  

Escuché por primera vez sobre este libro en un grupo de Whatsapp, donde varias activistas, intelectuales y académicos intercambiamos ideas e investigaciones sobre cómo se evidencia la gordofobia en México. En un inicio esperaba un libro que hablase sobre los procesos de resistencia racial generizada de las personas negras que responden a la gordofobia como sistema de opresión tanto estructural como personal. Luego pensé que se centraría en las formas de opresión racial gordofóbica hacia los cuerpos negros, una explicación histórica. Sin embargo, el trabajo de la autora consistió en identificar el tratamiento que le ha dado la supremacía blanca a la gordura, incorporando un dispositivo de distinción corporal basado en los cuerpos delgados como ejes de naturalización del peso humano, como parte de los ejes estructurales que sostienen a la blanquitud.

Abstract: In his last book, entitled Les nouveaux masques de l’extrême droite, Raphaël Llorca analyses the extreme right in France, represented by Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour in the 2022 presidential elections, through the notion of the mask that, at the same time, hides and shows. This metaphor allows the author to characterise the positioning, discourse and symbolism used by the far-right candidates. By emphasising the need to favour a systemic perspective, it allows us to understand the interdependence and interaction between the different candidates and their evolution throughout the electoral campaign. 

The study of contemporary ruralities tends to be accompanied by the image of the peasantry on the verge of disappearing. To counteract this trend, I seek to analyze the current panorama as the transition between a ‘disordered’ past and a ‘disordered’ present, challenging the inclination to regard peasants as the opposite of capital and the state. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in towns in southeastern Chiapas, I also show what the Sembrando Vida program contributes to rural experiences. Using a procedural perspective, I reflect on the classic questions in rural studies: Who are peasants? Are we witnessing the end of the peasantry in the agrarian capitalism of the 21st century?

The following text reviews the book La teoría del actor-red desde América Latina, edited by María de los Ángeles Pozas, Lidia Girola and Leandro Rodriguez-Medina. The book is an example of the influence this theory has had in Latin America. The comments on the fourteen chapters comprising the book are divided into four sections: texts that clarify the meaning of some of the central concepts of ANT or their use, texts that serve as methodological guides to learn to do research with ANT, texts linking ANT with other perspectives and critical texts of ANT.

From a personal perspective, and within the framework of client relations in the street markets in Monterrey, this article analyzes the union delegates and their interactions with the merchants. The objective is to explain based on what kind of relationships are reproduced the social ties that link delegates and merchants. It is argued that these social ties are at the base of the reproduction of the clientelistic system and are executed through actions that make sense due to their moral character. The data used are ethnographic and come from conversations, interviews and observations at ‘tianguis’ and trade union offices in Monterrey. The empirical section is based on the cases of two delegates.

En este artículo presento una interpretación general de las prácticas de clasificación, segregación y discriminación entre poblaciones de cuerpos, culturas y orígenes diferentes en el marco de la construcción del Estado-nación México, desde el siglo XIX hasta el XXI. Mi método será describir y analizar estos fenómenos históricos poniendo a dialogar a los más importantes marcos conceptuales que han sido utilizados para definirlos y comprenderlos: racialismo y racismo, mestizaje, pigmentocracia, blancura y blanquitud, liberalismo, ciencia y razón. Cada uno de ellos ha sido utilizado para estudiar el fenómeno a lo largo de este mismo periodo por intelectuales y escritores, historiadores, antropólogos, filósofos de la ciencia, sociólogos cualitativos y cuantitativos, genetistas y científicos políticos.

This article analyzes how the concepts “race” and “racism” are present and absent in different social contexts and how these presences and absences are related to different social values ​​and visions of what would be a desirable society. The article explores various arguments that advocate the use of the race concept as an analytical element, based on the idea that the race concept is useful for understanding the phenomenon of racism. The following issues are addressed: the apparent replacement of “race” with “culture”; the way racism operates through other grammars, such as culture and gender; the weakness of making a distinction between the public and the private in order to affirm that racial differences can be tolerated in the private sphere but not in the public sphere where it is argued that we all have the right and obligation to appear as universal citizens; the difference between the concept of race and racism; and the difference between talking about racism and talking about racial discrimination.

El argumento central que presento en este artículo es que la pieza clave que mantiene al mestizaje como proyecto racial mexicano en operación, y por ende la estabilidad de la identidad nacional, es el racismo anti-negro. Es más, una característica permanente y necesaria para el proyecto del mestizaje es una aversión continua a la negridad o lo ‘negro’ como idea, y un desfavorecimiento persistente de, la población racializada como negra. Esto quiere decir que el imaginario del ser mexicano se basa en la idea de que 1) no hay personas mexicanas negras (como una cuestión ontológica), y 2) hay que distanciarse de lo que represente lo negro. Así, la aparente negación y/o exclusión de la población negra del imaginario nacional es una estrategia necesaria para el mantenimiento mismo de la identidad nacional. En este momento en que entramos a la década del 2020 con una fuerte tendencia multicultural, en el que hay una creciente movilización de organizaciones negras y afrodescendientes en el país, con el reciente logro del reconocimiento constitucional del sujeto afromexicano en 2019 y la inclusión de la pregunta sobre autoidentificación negra en el censo nacional 2020, la relación entre mestizaje y racismo anti-negro se está reconfigurando. En esta reconfiguración hay un debate, a veces álgido y confuso, sobre qué es lo negro y cómo debe nombrarse y comprenderse.
