The author of the article presents an analysis of The Happy Prince (2018), a film written, directed, and starred by Rupert Everett —an English actor with an extensive Wildean career—. The film has integrated key excerpts from the 1888 fairy tale “The Happy Prince” narrated in English and French by Oscar Wilde’s character at different points in the film. Because of these changes of medium and language —inter-medial and inter-systemic translation in Kaindl’s (2020) terminology—, the film reveals dimensions of the queer child obviated from previous research about this short story and its translations. Also, the Spanish subtitles of the film reveal how the “fossilization” of a translation decision from the first decades of the twentieth century omitting inter-male passion becomes a symptom of such narrative manipulation when three language systems interact simultaneously on screen.

En aquest article es du a terme una anàlisi qualitativa i quantitativa dels principals problemes de traducció presents en la sèrie d’animació The Adventures of Puss in Boots (DreamWorks 2011-2018, EUA) i la seua versió traduïda per al doblatge al valencià per al canal de televisió À Punt Mèdia. A partir d’una metodologia d’anàlisi contrastiva i descriptiva, aquest estudi se centra en les tècniques i estratègies de traducció emprades en el text meta per a resoldre aquests problemes.

This paper analyses the results of a reception study with questionnaires, the objective of which was to compare the acceptance of professional and non-professional translations in Catalan sign language by end-users. Four volunteers from different profiles (native speakers and translation students) were asked to record their translation of two children’s stories. Afterwards, we designed a questionnaire showing two videos (one signed by a professional translation and the other by an amateur one) and asked the respondents to rate eight categories on a Likert scale. Altogether, 29 people answered the questionnaire, which showed that amateur translations can be at the same level as the professional ones, as long as the translator has a good command of the language.

Pamela Travers rewrote the sixth chapter of Mary Poppins (“Bad Tuesday”) twice in response to criticism of its discriminatory content and language. The book was banned for this reason in the San Francisco public library system in the 1980s. This is a study of the Spanish translation of the first version of the chapter, published in Spain in the first decade of Franco’s dictatorship and still included in the current edition. The stereotypical depiction of non-white ethnicities in both languages and contexts will be discussed, together with the use of taboo words and unequal treatment of men and women in a children story.

The aim of this article is to show how the Maya the Bee franchise entered the Basque cultural system and, more specifically, how the audiovisual translation (AVT) into Basque was conducted. Maya the Bee is a character from a book written by the German author Waldemar Bonsels in 1912. Yet, her origins are not that well known, as she made her entrance into the public consciousness more recently through audiovisual media. The first two sections of the article delve both into the origins and the multimedia character of Maya the Bee. The third section of the article focuses on the introduction of the Maya franchise into the Basque cultural system, the fourth section explains the methodology used and the fifth section presents the results of an analysis of the AVT. The analysis focuses on the dubbing of the 3D series (English into Basque) and looks at whether both nature-related terms are simplified and offensive language and wordplay have been retained.

This paper examines the translation of Carson Ellis’s Du Iz Tak? into Spanish and French. Du Iz Tak?, which won the E. B. White Read Aloud, is characterised by the fact that it is written in an invented language, the language of bugs. The purpose of the following pages is to study the mechanisms that lead to the translation of Ellis’s work and to analyse how Koi ke bzzz? and ¿Mau iz io? represent two ways of approaching the translation of invented languages and of considering readability.

The historical development and change of the English complementation system has received a great deal of attention in recent years, but work remains to be done on Present-day English. Previous studies on the complement-taking predicate regret have shown that in British English the choice between a that-clause and the gerundial -ing is non-categorical or probabilistic, with the speaker being able to choose between them. This non-categorical variation is the focus of the present article, which aims to identify any existing differences in the clausal complementation profile of regret in British and American English, as well as any linguistic variables that might determine speaker choice.

Paule Marshall’s literary concerns cover key issues of the Black Diaspora such as Black consciousness and the search for wholeness. These two issues connect with the research about the different manifestations of consciousness carried out by scientists such as physicist Peter Russell, nurse Margaret Newman, philosopher Ken Wilber and psychologist Paloma Cabadas. In this essay, I contend that Marshall’s characters experience different aspects of consciousness that take them into a process known as the search for wholeness. Paule Marshall’s writings are also part of the Black Consciousness Movement, inquiring into epistemologies that have their roots in “the workable past”, creating emancipatory knowledge for afro-descendants. The methodology employed to read Marshall’s novels follows the conscious evolution paradigm put forward by psychologist Paloma Cabadas, and the integral consciousness model proposed by Ken Wilber. Both models offer valid routes for analyzing Marshall’s characters in the light of Newman’s concept of expanding consciousness.
