In Mexico, the largest wind infrastructure capacity is in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, with nearly 1,600 wind turbines installed on land dedicated mainly to cattle ranching. The objective of this article was to study the role that ranchers in the region played in promoting the wind industry, as well as the benefits they obtained from it. We conducted in-depth interviews, workshops, and a survey to obtain information. There are two main findings: 1) ranchers associated with the ruling party were central in promoting the wind industry; 2) the wealth resulting from land rental concentrated in ranchers with 20 hectares or more, in contrast to the socialization of the effects caused by the installation of wind turbines in farming and grazing areas. We conclude that the wind industry promoted enrichment in a few hands, in contrast to the socialization of damage, the most important being oil contamination, putting livestock in the entire region at risk.

The climate integrates processes that allow the existence of life, but anthropogenic activities have modified it. This article aims to analyze the factors, with emphasis on climate change (CC), that impact human-animal interaction (HAI) and modify zoonoses, as well as examine the international commitments adopted. We carried out systematic searches through platforms and digital libraries with the support of keywords, analyzed the information, and generated conclusions. The effect of CC on zoonoses is notable in changes in the distribution of vectors and pathogens, the appearance of emerging and re-emerging diseases, and contaminated food. The international commitments focused on CC and health are diverse; they range from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. We conclude that the CC changes the HAI and exacerbates threats from zoonotic diseases, especially in vulnerable countries, by which climate and health policies are needed based on the needs of each country but binding. The biosphere will be maintained if cooperation between countries ensures biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.

This article presents the results of qualitative socio-environmental research on the narratives and metaphors that some inhabitants of the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico, shared about the San Pedro River. The preceding reflects human beings’ relationship with polluted and abandoned urban rivers. In the academic field, chemical research on the San Pedro River stands out; however, it is difficult to find social studies on the matter. Following the reflective process proposed by Archer (2016), we sought to identify the ideas, projects, and actions through testimonies of the people around the San Pedro River. The primary data collection technique used was the open interview. The selection criteria for the key agents were according to the geographic proximity, the number of years they had been living near the San Pedro River, continuous participation as environmental activists, public workers related directly to the environment, or the degree of scientific knowledge of these subjects. Among the findings, there were narratives about environmental awareness among the research collaborators, memories of abundance, and utopias and dystopias about the future of the San Pedro River.

The challenge that anthropogenic global warming (AGW) constitutes forces us to think about how different societies can provide solutions to mitigate a phenomenon that threatens to affect the living conditions of future generations. Despite being pointed out, Mexican society does not seem to be aware of the problem of high vulnerability to climate change. In this article, we will study the reasons that prevent Mexican society from acting in a coordinated manner against the AGW, and we will make some proposals.

Throughout its history, the development model in the Mexican Caribbean has maintained a linear economic commitment, which compromises the quality of its natural and cultural resources and represents a continuous loss of the services provided by its ecosystems. Based on the evolution of the main productive activities in Quintana Roo (forestry, fishing, and tourism), we first conducted a historical analysis to identify some barriers that hinder the transition towards circular management in the Mexican Caribbean. Secondly, through a participatory action-research design, it was determined how identifying common local objectives could potentiate the integration of tourist-fishing cooperatives towards circular management from the ecological economy and circular economy approach. The results obtained showed lines of action against the problems identified based on four community involvement strategies: from extracting to reducing (sustainable use); from producing to prolonging (sustainable infrastructure); from using to closing cycles (coastal governance), and from discarding to regenerating (integral restoration). These strategies propose laying the foundations for a new circular management system for coastal ecosystems at the local level aimed at sustainable development in the region.

When facing climate change as a challenge, it is essential to know the communities’ adaptation capacities to define the appropriate strategies and public policies that reduce their vulnerability. In this research, we aimed to design and to validate a set of indicators and measure the adaptive capacity (at the ejido level) of the coastal communities of San Blas, Nayarit (Mexican Pacific), as a case study. We used the sustainable livelihoods (MVS by its acronym in Spanish) approach as the theoretical basis of the indicator’s model to measure adaptive capacity in five dimensions (natural capital, social capital, financial capital, human capital, and physical capital). We validated the indicators with information from two time periods, 2000-2009 and 2010-2019. As a result, we obtained 22 indicators: four from the natural capital, five from the social capital, four from the financial capital, four from the human capital, and five from the physical capital. The study area showed a low level of adaptive capacity, which decreased from 35 % in the 2000-2009 period to 30 % in the 2010-2019 period, with financial and human capital being the lowest in both periods. One of the study’s limitations was the lack of information at the local level, which involved estimating data by the per capita correction. These indicators are expected to serve as a diagnostic tool for the adaptation strategies development in Mexico and other regions in Latin America.

The future of natural resources depends on our behavior, particularly under legal terms and biodiversity conservation. In this article, we ana-lyze the legal situation of the lands where the cave "El Volcán de los Murciélagos" is located, based on current laws at the state and federal levels. We examined the documents of the litigation process of the Na-tional Agrarian Registry and analyzed the process through the principles of the socio-ecological trap theory and the tragedy of the commons. We explain the consequence of the acquisition of goods by the Foundation and the poorly profitable benefits for the Hopelchén Commissariat, con-cluding that the ejidatarios fell into a socio-ecological trap by considering that the economic contribution offered by the Foundation would help them have a better quality of life, by increasing their assets. A conflict and termination of the usufruct contract generated, putting the cave and its surroundings at risk, which could give rise to a tragedy of the com-mons. The authorities must apply environmental laws to preserve the area, and whoever owns them must respect them.
