This article presents key findings from the 2022 National Survey on Cultural Consumption (ENCC) conducted in Argentina. It traces the background of studies on cultural consumption in Latin America, then describes the survey's methodological design and the dimensions it covers, along with the challenges of conducting this assessment shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus is on results related to television and streaming platform consumption, social media use, and news reading habits. The ENCC data reveal that television remains relevant, although streaming services and social networks have expanded their audiences. Newscasts continue to play an important role in information consumption, though the use of social media as a news source is on the rise. One noteworthy trend is the simultaneous and integrated nature of different practices, such as using social media to comment on what is being watched on television or streaming platforms. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of ENCC data for research and the development of public policies aimed at improving access and citizen participation.

Since 2023, Uruguay has become one of the countries that have explicitly incorporated Media and Information Literacy (MIL) into its educational curriculum. MIL encompasses a set of competencies that equip citizens to engage critically and ethically with information and the media. This article examines how MIL has been integrated into the curricular documents of integrated basic education, focusing on its conceptualization and the presence of related learning objectives through a content analysis. Although the term MIL is explicitly mentioned in the “Communication and Society” unit of ninth grade, curricular objectives linked to these competencies have been identified from early childhood education through secondary education. However, clarifying the relationship between the different terms used in official documentation is essential for a better understanding of the scope and implications of MIL.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the context of the emergence and implementation of the public policy called “Mayores en red” (“Seniors online”), aimed at providing training in the use of communication and information technologies (ICT) to reduce the digital, social and generational gap that affects the elderly. This program was developed by the Directorate for the Elderly of the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina, during the period 2021-2023 in the context of the global pandemic of COVID-19, a time when physical and social presence was severely restricted due to the possibility of contagion, which had a strong impact on the elderly in their daily lives. The conclusions show that these educational spaces are necessary for the digital inclusion of the elderly, however, it is necessary to implement a design and planning of continuous evaluation that allows the development of a global strategic plan.

This article examines the career of Brazilian journalist Paulo Francis through an analysis of his writings. Despite his questionable professional integrity and ideological consistency, Francis managed to establish himself as a respected journalist and cultural figure in Brazil for many years. This literature review examines the evolving role of social media in crisis management within the European Union (EU). Building upon peer-reviewed articles published from 2013 to 2024, the study explores how social media platforms simultaneously facilitate rapid information exchange and amplify misinformation, shaping public opinion and policy outcomes. Key themes include the paradoxical nature of social media as a “double-edged sword”: enabling real-time updates and grassroots mobilization while also fueling polarized discourse and disinformation. Through a thematic approach, the review highlights diverse crisis contexts —financial instability, migration surges, natural disasters, health emergencies, and political upheavals— and the ways in which social media magnifies complexity by uniting or dividing stakeholders. Special attention is paid to emerging trends such as digital activism, extremist propaganda, and the increasing reliance on algorithmic data for policy decisions. By outlining the benefits and risks of integrating digital platforms into crisis governance, this review underscores the critical importance of informed strategies and balanced regulation. It concludes that while social media holds promise for fostering resilience, transparent institutional communication and robust digital literacy efforts are essential for mitigating the downsides of misinformation and divisive narratives.

The diversity of artifacts often obscures the driving force behind technological change. This article aims to systematize the agenda of ubiquitous computing both as a vector of these transformations and as a key R&D program for understanding contemporary media technologies. The methodological approach is grounded in critical analysis from materialist perspectives within communication and media studies—specifically, archaeological and reconstructive methods. The article first examines two genealogical phases of the engineering and industrial agenda: mobile, distributed, and context-aware computing; and invisible, imperceptible, and shared computing. It then explores the theoretical and epistemological foundations of the agenda. Finally, it reviews research lines that have emerged from this agenda, particularly in the fields of intelligent systems and the Internet of Things. This article contributes to understanding the substrate of one of the most significant R&D programs of our time. It does so by recovering its historical sedimentation, unveiling its covert connections to contemporary media realities (IoT, Pervasive AI, etc.), and highlighting the areas in which the ubiquitous computing project remains indeterminate and unfinished. The conclusions reflect on the nature of the oblivion that has rendered ubiquitous computing the hidden substrate of present-day technological development and its foresight.

This study analyzes the trajectories of gamers in Latin America, focusing on their initiation, practices, and preferences. Using a quantitative and descriptive approach, 1,280 responses were collected through an online survey administered between April and May 2024. Variables such as age of initiation, devices, and social dynamics were evaluated. Men typically begin gaming at a younger age on home consoles, while women exhibit more diverse trajectories, including handheld devices and computers. Women report having had male family members involved in their gaming during childhood and currently prioritize playing with romantic partners and relatives, while men prefer online interactions. Smartphones are the most frequently used device by women, whereas men predominantly prefer consoles. Gender differences influence gaming trajectories, which are shaped by sociocultural and technological factors. This analysis contributes to understanding how gaming trajectories and preferences evolve in the region and their impact on video game consumption.

This article analyzes the role of political humor accounts during Argentina’s 2023 presidential campaign. Through an exploratory study, theories of laughter were combined with a socio-semiotic approach to hypermediatization to compare accounts associated with the main political parties across Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and TikTok. The results show that: (1) account affiliations are dynamic and may exhibit tensions with the political forces they support; (2) accounts aligned with La Libertad Avanza displayed greater content production, follower engagement, and dissemination; (3) mockery was the dominant mode of humor, followed by political satire; (4) only in the libertarian case did satire include a programmatic component that clearly conveyed a governing plan to voters. The study concludes that, comparatively, these accounts generated a broader diffusion of interpretants offering moral and political justifications for supporting the alliance, as well as frameworks for interpreting future events.
