This paper uses the qualitative unstructured interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to understand how Bamasaaba men conceptualise masculinity in response to safe medical male circumcision (SMMC) in Ugandan. Results were obtained from cultural leaders, clan leaders, traditional surgeons, medical officers, 2016 initiates, focus groups and the key informant, a representative of Inzu ya Masaaba. Processing the audio recorded responses and data analysis involved transcribing, interpreting, coding, and categorising using Atlas Ti software. The results of the study suggest ambivalence. The historical and political attempts to abolish TMC have evoked resistance, with most holding firmly to TMC as the only means by which Bamasaaba boys can acquire the status of manhood. However, some men see health values in medicalised male circumcision practices and believe that medicalisation has caused positive adaptations to TMC for purposes of enhanced hygiene and safety.

The role of masculinities in overcoming gender violence has been studied in different research studies. However, the role of new masculinities in overcoming violence from an intercultural perspective has not been dealt with in depth. This article presents the current state of the art on studies of new masculinities, aiming to clarify which models of masculinity offer interethnic possibilities for overcoming violence. Thus, a review of the scientific literature in international reference databases has been carried out. First, the dichotomy between the hegemonic model of masculinities that perpetuates violence and inequality, but is socially attractive, versus models of masculinity that have achieved great changes in terms of overcoming inequality, but without attractiveness, is presented. In the second section, we describe how the new model of alternative masculinity combines ethics and desire, thus overcoming the double standard between the two. This represents possibilities for men who want to contribute to overcoming gender violence by participating in more egalitarian relationships that unite ethics and passion.  Interethnic studies are presented that are based on this new model of alternative masculinity and that also breaks with white hegemony, thus breaking down racist prejudices and offering even more possibilities from this cultural diversity.

One of the scenarios of extreme poverty is the situation of life on the street (homelessness). The case study presented in this article analyzes the meanings of poverty constructed from male experiences of deported ex-migrants and identifies future projections that are made in the precarious context. The participants of this research are seven men who go to a humanitarian aid shelter in Hermosillo, capital of Sonora (Mexico) and who were interviewed for the elaboration of their life stories, a technique chosen for the induction of meanings, meanings and experiences. The results show the view from Human Rights around the needs and aspects that consolidate the problem from social exclusion. A projection of life is proposed without incorporating an agency role, which generates a “living in the present” based on guidelines from positivism and faith. It concludes with the need to incorporate gender in the analysis of extreme poverty, as an axis to understand the situation on the street, and life stories as an appropriate technique for the collection of meanings and experiences around new social processes that are taking place. developing on the northern border of the country.

This article offers an intensive analysis and discussion regarding the practice of hegemonic masculinity in the matrilineal marriage tradition belonging to the Minangkabau ethnic group in the western part of Indonesia's Sumatera archipelago. The rules of Minangkabau matrilineal customs that still place men as policymakers for women are a contributing factor to the practice of hegemonic masculinity. The data source used to examine the problem is an Indonesian novel set in Minangkabau society and culture entitled Sitti Nurbaya by Marah Rusli. Text data obtained from the novel Sitti Nurbaya were analyzed using content analysis techniques. After analyzing the stages of data reduction, data display, and data verification, it was found that two matrilocal marriage traditions in Minangkabau society show the practice of hegemonic masculinity, namely a) kawin bajapuik tradition; and b) the tradition of polygamy. The hegemonic masculinity in both traditions is characterized by the superiority of male power in regulating the conditions of marriage and the emphasis on female obedience as subordinate objects. This study is considered to have greatly contributed to the initial study of masculine literature in the Minangkabau matrilineal society, the study of the revitalization of its gender mainstreaming, as well as efforts to find out the description of the social reality of Minangkabau society in the early 20th century.

This paper focuses on the scientific production that has been generated on single-parent families headed by a man. The objective is to identify contributions that have been made from different areas of knowledge, and to provide a descriptive synthesisof these contributions, focusing on the research interests that these families have raised over time. This will allow us to systematize, albeit in an approximate way, the scientific research in the field of single fatherhood. In methodological terms, thestudy is based on a bibliographic search in documentary collections of international libraries. After obtaining the final list, each contribution was reviewed to identify descriptive issues. The results are presented in two historical phases. The first one, focused on the seventies and eighties when the research topic started to arouse some interest in the scientific community. The second one, from the nineties to the present. A historical approach is prioritized in the analysis, in order to observe theevolution of research interests.

This paper examined the perceptions of students from different engineering programs at a private university in Cartagena de Indias (N = 243) with the aim of clearly identifying the profile of an engineer in training with a traditionalist ideology of sex roles, because historically this field of education has been assumed as something masculine. By means of a descriptive cross-sectional study and based on the predictor variables sex, age and academic program, significant differences were identified in the first and second variables (more sexist values in men and older people), and by introducing a univariate calculation, the model incorporating the three variables was also significant. Thus, it has been recognised that certain careers (such as Electrical and Electronic Engineering) have consistently presented different values associated with a conservative view of men's and women's roles.

The teaching of a foreign language, as may be the case of the Spanish language, requires the acquisition not only of a linguistic competence or a communicative competence, but also of an intercultural competence. Learners of a foreign language must know the sociocultural rules of the linguistic community in order to achieve pragmatically successful interlocutions. In this regard, learners must know not only the linguistic resources of courtesy, but also how useful it can be for the aims pursued and how it should be adapted to the communicative context. Among these resources, we find in the Spanish language the so-called condicional de cortesía/de atenuación, a conditional tense used for polite requests. In addition, this can be combined with other resources, such as indirect speech acts, modal verbs, etc. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a different acquisition is detected among native speakers of individualistic cultures and speakers of collectivist cultures when going from A2 level to B1 level. Based on the Corpus de aprendices del español of Instituto Cervantes, we have been able to demonstrate that evolution is indeed dissimilar (the speakers of collectivist cultures seem to faster acquire the pragmatic value of said conditional tense) and that these results may possibly spring from the different worldview of social relations in each of these cultures.

Considering the fact that mass media are propitious spaces for the standardization of the linguistic norm, this study analyzes the degree of acceptance of some norms that were proposed in the Ortografía de la lengua española (RAE and ASALE 2010): a) the accent of guión/guion and other similar words, b) sólo/solo and the demonstrative pronouns and c) some cases of loans and Latinisms (such as whisky/wiski). Two newspapers from five Spanish-speaking countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain and Mexico) were analyzed. GoogleApi was used to collect 179,238 occurrence contexts in total, divided by years and journals, from 2010 to 2019. The results indicate that, at the end of the period studied, there are still, globally, many cases of forms with the old spelling in the three groups.

This study focuses on the research of slang as a phenomenon of interest in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. In this sense, the article tries to answer the following questions: What are the most studied slang in the teaching of Spanish as a second language or foreign language? What didactic resources are most appropriate to carry out the teaching of slang in the Spanish classroom? With the aim of exposing the appropriate levels for the acquisition of slang and include them in the teaching-learning curriculum of that language. Finally, the research shows tools and strategies for the study of reggaeton as a group slang, of marginal type, along with other existing trends in our language, such as parlache or slang in applied Spanish.
