The appreciation of vernacular patrimony is an act of justice and recognition of the dignity of indigenous peoples. It is a cultural legacy that is subject to strong economic and social depredations. The present article specifies some theoretical issues to define certain aspects of these problems. To provide a viable alternative for recovery, an architectural project is proposed for Sierra Alta, in the foothills of the Mexican Sierra Madre Oriental. The proposal has two components: the creation of community spaces including a meeting room, shared laundry rooms and a self-build workshop; and the possibility of improving the same vernacular dwellings, through sanitation measures, expansion and diversification of existing spaces. The project´s formal support comes from the incorporation of everyday ancestral objects. It is intended that through the self-management and self-assessment of these communities, the project will be open and democratic in nature.

Resumen
This article lays out the results of a study entitled “The teaching of architecture in the freshman year”, the aim of which was to take an in-depth look at the syllabi of different schools of architecture around the world and understand how the structure of the freshman-year curriculum shapes the education of future architects. One of the main difficulties encountered in this research is the continuing fragmentation of knowledge into areas, in spite of the growing need to train architects that understand the discipline in an integrated way. Therefore, this study stresses the need to establish transverse topics that make it possible to once again join the aforementioned self-contained areas of knowledge, and in this manner assure that students make connections between acquired knowledge.

Resumen
Considering architecture as an activity likely to be taught, it is proposed that the architectural project be analyzed as an essentially cognitive entity. This view reassesses the inherited conceptions of the teaching of architecture by proposing an interpretation of the process as knowledge-generating praxis. Specifically, the study focused on the different types of knowledge involved in the project, both explicit-conceptual and implicit-procedural. The strategies used made it possible to triangulate a theoretical analysis with a descriptive-observational research design in order to study project protocols (components) and their curricular design approaches. The data revealed complex cognitive and representational activities in the design process, although they are not normally regarded as objects of study in classical models of educational management. A praxeological model of variables is proposed to understand how projects function, as well as several guidelines to bring about change in educational activities.

Teaching design constitutes the core of architectural education and is cut across by multiple viewpoints, nuances, demands, experiments and influences. Therefore, it is quite difficult to determine its content since it is covered at different levels that are not always easy to explain precisely. The approach of this paper is mainly theoretical, although it is also the result of educational experiments. It examines that content which because of its versatile and non-determined nature constitutes a laboratory for experiments that helps to enrich architectural learning and practice. This content is part of the act of designing and has several pedagogical aims such as avoiding mental block when starting, awakening learner interest in design, inserting critique without forcing it by questioning previous knowledge, promoting creativity, inviting students to experiment with different processes, activating their imagination and in general introducing them to “the act of doing.”

Resumen
Vernacular architecture is considered an important manifestation of culture; without this clarity it is not possible to make contributions that guarantee its continuity in the present context. To this end, the analysis of the culture-city relationship should be carried out from the point of view of: the human factor and the inherited culture. In contemporary architecture, it is possible to perceive a deterioration and at the same time a regression due to the proliferation of unaesthetic elements. This phenomenon also raises a question derived from the fact that people see popular culture as constitutive of their own tradition, so that the dilemma lies in defining what it really is--is it "neoeclecticism", vernacular architecture or kitsch?By means of a historical-architectural and social approach, which relies on the use of the exploratory observation method, the phenomenon is investigated to understand the term "vernacular" in its relationship with culture, and thus identify viable alternatives to address the current problem.

Resumen
The teaching of sustainability at the university level implies the use of adaptive management methodologies and systems of thought that require creativity, flexibility and critical reflection. In the case of architecture, urban planning and landscape, the teaching process also involves a predisposition for observation, innovation, visualization and the theoretical-practical resolution of problems. In line with the sustainable development paradigm, the School of Architecture at Diego Portales University has implemented the Sustainability in Architectural Teaching Plan, which includes transverse content on environmental, social and economic sustainability in its workshops. This article addresses research developments regarding the systematization of sustainability applied to workshops on architecture and the opportunities generated by the associated new pedagogical tools. Relevant findings on the architectural design workshop´s final exam rubric are presented and future prospects for the plan and its inclusion the architecture curriculum are considered.
