This paper aims to reconsider the eccentric intellectual – visual, literary and philosophical – production of the Uruguayan Pedro Figari in light of the ideological background that animates it and founds this particular Figarian project: to product universally shared forms which contribute to the affirmation of a unique idea of Latin-American modernity. A project in which, in the intersection of figurative stylization, rhetoric of example and utopian narrative, modernity still results linked to a subalternity strictly related to a colonial heritage.

A Travel to the Ranquel Indians, by L.V. Mansilla, has been defined as the only text of Nineteenth Century Argentinian literature where the voices of natives clearly emerged. Nevertheless, in the history of its reception these voices were silenced by white society and the book was reduced to its anecdotal dimension. Paradoxically, the more the natives became mute, the more they were visible, converted into images, icons and mere representations. At the same time, more and more illustrations were included in the editions of the book. This essay aims to demonstrate how the illustrations were decisive in the repositioning and resemantization of the text.

This paper analyses the relationship between the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Mexican collective consciousness in Rodolfo Usigli’s Corona de luz (1963). The work speaks about the supposed apparitions of the Virgin on the Tepeyac hill and re-writes ironically the religious tradition as well as the historical sources. Even though the representation of the Virgin never appears explicitly, the audience/reader keeps on being in contact with the Guadalupe’s miraculous image thanks to the extraordinary power of the sacred icon, so deep-rooted into the Mexican cultural identity.

Benedetto and Saer participated in film projects as scriptwriters and as adapters of literary texts to film. Both authors were also film critics. This essay analyzes the stamp that film left on Di Benedetto’s short story “Declinación y Ángel” and on Saer’s “Sombras sobre vidrio esmerilado”, as reflected in the use of a certain type of slow and dilated language, the treatment of light and sound, their characters and the deployment of resources such as the use of sight and detailed descriptions.

This paper analyses the ekphrasis – in its double meaning of “vivid description” and “description of a work of art” – in “El despertar de la criada”, a Daniel Briguet's short story (Rosario, Homo Sapiens, 2010). Through close reading of both the story and the painting (Le lever de la bonne, Eduardo Sívori, 1887) we will study the change and the permanence in the representation of domesticity and its protagonists in the XIXth - XXIth centuries.

If in Hieronymus Bosch’s (1453-‐‑1516) hybrids and metamorphosis Marosa di Giorgio (1932-‐‑2004) absorbs the most symbolic and disturbing aspects of his “maravilloso negro”, in the same flamish painter Amanda Berenguer (1921-‐‑2010) finds the inspiration for a subversive discourse. Writings and images enlighten and strengthen each other while the two extraordinary texts of uruguayan literature (Papeles salvajes and Los culos de El Bosco) intertwine and converse with triptych of The Garden of Earthly Delights, thus participating in its own complex exegesis.

The writer Saer, in common with the visual artists of his “zona” Espino and Renzi, questioned how cognition functions and its representability. My proposal is to trace their approaches to the nature of language contained in the literary and visual dialogue between these three artists of Santa Fe (Argentina). They pre-dated many issues which are central to Cognitive Linguistics, starting from the experiential approach to cognition focused on the function of embodied and entrenched perception, memory and the possibility of constructing events from multiple perspectives.

In the books of the Puerto Rican artist and writer Eduardo Lalo (Cuba, 1960) a ‘counter‑geography’ is formed of his country and his city, San Juan de Puerto Rico, which, having been colonized by the United States, has become an urban mirror of North American cities. As the observer-narrator moves through its streets, writing, drawing, taking photographs, freeing it from its status as a tourist image, the city gains depth and solidity, and through an iconotextual mix of forms of identity becomes a complex image showing the marks and scars of the true San Juan: its genius loci.
